2010: Running backs

I think we're going to see big turnover here. Portis still has talent, but he cannot carry a large workload. Betts looks done and Cartwright isn't good for anything other than kick returns. Not to mention Mike Sellers who has not been very good this season. I'd like to see a second round pick devoted to selecting a running back (after the first round pick goes to a OT of course.)
I'd like to see Portis and Betts cut loose, and perhaps Willie Parker as the new backup/change of pace back. We'd also need TWO backup runners. Every year we contend with injuries. Why not actually be prepared? What about Lendale White or Ryan Grant from the Packers to give us a great stable of RBs?
As far as FB's go, there's not a lot available. Justin Griffith looks available though. A lot of work needs to be done on this group.

Running back is obviously a concern, but we aren't going to be able to address every need in one offseason and we can't go blowing a 2nd rounder on an rb when we have bigger needs at other positions. QB, oline, and SAM should be addressed before running back.

I disagree... if a RB is available in the second round I see that as a much bigger need. Portis is done and there's no one else. I'd rather have a FA LB and a younger RB.

Remember, this is going to be a three year project. Why would you EVER pick up a RB in FA, much less during a rebuilding year. It's a waste of money and they can be found (with a good scouting staff) all over the draft. The RB should come last as it doesn't take a RB that long to get up to speed. Once you have the core of the team, you pick one up in the draft and then you start recycling them every three years.
I'd rather spend the first few rounds on a LT, LB and a RG in that order.
Use Betts and Cartright next year. They can do the job.

How many draft picks do you think we have?

Not sure if we can draft an RB but if we did...
I like Toby Gerhart from Stanford, right at 1400 yards and close to 20 TDs
Dexter McCluster from Ole Miss who is a guy who could line up at RB or WR and maybe even be the "Wildcat" guy, kind of like a Darren Sproles but with a bit more speed.
Donald Buckram is a junior from UTEP who is solid but a smaller guy, he has over 1400 yards and 14 TDs.
Ryan Mathews, another junior from Fresno who has 1500 yards and 14 TDs
But who knows, The Steelers took a running back that didn't even start at UNC and he turned out to be pretty good (Willie Parker) of course they did their due diligence which isn't something that our front office seems to be too concerned with.

I'll take Gerhart or Spiller in the 1st. Use the middle rounds to solidify the o-line. Like someone said you can't fill all of your needs in one draft, so I think I would go into this draft thinking offense.

Betts totally blew his knee out. He's not going to be ready and he won't be 100% until probably 2011. Look how long it took Rogers to get back to his normal self (note I didn't say good, but his normal self. I'm not trying to start a Rogers discussion).

I think RB is a position we can address through free agency. Get lineman in here, get a CB and a young QB to groom.

I'm on board to go RB second round. Or if Okung is off the board, maybe first round. There are a lot of OT's that grade out early second round. Although some juniors that come out might head to the top.

While NOT a Shanahan fan, I do agree with him on RBs -- you can get them later in the draft, or free agency -- ala, Ganther. The guy is a player. I can see him being one of two backs who split time next year. I was sold on the guy a few games ago when he picked up a blitz and smacked the LB, he looked like Portis!
No RB in rounds 1 or 2 please.

Javid Best would be sick to have with Shanahan that home run speed and play making ability. Spiller in round 1? No thanks we are picking in the Top 10 and he just isn't worth that.
