sherm lewis and the return of the screen pass

I'm predicting lots of this on monday night because:

a: sherm lewis west coast disciple loves the screen

b: eggles pinning back thier ears and coming at us cuz our o line sux

c: our w/o's cant catch and our qb has no time to throw downfield

d: rembering this in green bay and detroit when sherm was there

I also imagine that sherm will set up his assortment of lucky troll dolls across the front window of the booth to help him call plays!

Anybody else know what to expect?

I hope I've been screaming for a screen pass...I'm also worried aboout Philly...they run a nice one with Westbrook

I think we'll see Sellers more involves in the passing game as well

As long as he's not diving for TD attempts, I'm ok.

I would love to see more screen passes. I think that Betts is a great player for screens. CP doesn't have the best hands, IMO.

You really like 3rd and 7s, don't you? Running on 1st and 2nd down hasn't really worked for us so far this year...

A screen pass??? - maybe I'm wrong (after all, I've never played this game) but I thought you needed a decent offensive line to run screens effectively and to have any sort of success offensively - part of our problem offensively, it seems to this silly Aussie, is this offensive line cannot really do much for the running or the passing game

I hope we find a way to score some touchdowns - anything will be better than what we have seen so far this year

CP is underrated and underused in the passing game. He has far better hands than Sellers or Betts.

I don't know Vet. I'd love him to prove me wrong though.

No or little running on any down would be preferred, since we have zero OL and therefore no capacity whatsoever to run the ball.

Sellers drops a lot of passes, especially in clutch situations. I'll pass.

Yeah, me too. He dropped a sure TD earlier in the season, after all.

He's somehow got this rep of being an underused playmaker, and I'm really not sure why. He carries the ball like a loaf of bread, doesn't convert short yardage TDs (remember the Giants game last year?), and drops passes.

His forte is blocking. That's what he's good at. Let's not try to make him into something he's not.

Please hear what Riggins had to say on Radio about this:

Ask Riggo on WTOP Radio

"... somebody has the mindset of a child ... "

"... there is going to be a lot of sessions in the couch with somebody ... "

ROTFALMAO

You baffle me Frank. You love JC, who has only proven that he isn't good, yet you don't like CP, who is one of the top 3 RBs (2nd in yards, 1st in average, 3rd in TDs) in skins history. Then you place the majority of the problem with the passing game on the OL, yet you think the issue with the running game is CP. Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't get it one bit.

I just don't understand your reasoning sometimes.

My issue with Portis is that he can never break a tackle. I blame his lack of numbers solely on the offensive line. There are no holes either. Another problem with CP is that he doesn't practice patience at all. In his time here, he may be the #1 RB in Redskins history for running into the lineman's backs.

Funny thing about CP. My Wife watches the games with me sometimes and she always asks, "Why is Portis runing right into the the line when there are no holes. Look, he ran right into the lineman." Or here's another one, "That guy hit the RB's foot and he fell down."

So then last season I decided to show her Adrian Peterson and she said this exactly, "you need to get a guy like that." What can I say - "I know."

But keep in mind that JC isn't at fault at all. He's not free of all wrongdoing. I just don't think he deserves the amount of blame that people put on him in DC. I think a lot of the blame should go to the WR's too.

As Ochocinco says, "Child Please."

I have wondered about the reasoning for taking Portis out so often on 3rd downs:
Portis is the best back we have at pass blocking - actually he's the ONLY back we have that can pass block
Portis has shown to be very good at catching the ball out of the backfield - actually he's the best RB we have for catching passes

what's wrong with keeping Portis in the backfield more often on 3rd downs?

I agree. I always thought Betts was a great 2nd down back. We used to run a great draw using Betts on 2nd and long.

It seems to me that we're pulling Portis on 3rd downs on the strange principle that this is the way to get Betts more playing time and carries. But if I'm passing on 3rd down, it's no contest as to who I want in there to pick up blitzers.

Frank - you cannot really think that the reasons we are not doing well with the running game is due to Portis - any back in the NFL right now would not be doing much better, if at all

I'll agree that Campbell is not totally to blame for our offensive woes but there are a lot of starting QBs that are showing me that they are a lot better than he is as a QB
I was one who thought that Denver made a mistake in thinking that Orton was better than Campbell - Campbell has shown that decision was the right one NOT Orton - Orton may not be a great QB but Campbell is not even a good QB, he's just an NFL QB is all - Campbell wanted the opportunity to show the NFL and the guys in charge here what a good QB he is - well, he's not had any sort of support but he's also done nothing to show that even with a great line he might be a good QB in the NFL - this guy's a back-up QB .... if that

That is why I am so upset with JC right now. He came out with all this talk/fire/dragon and has backed up ZERO of what he said. And if it is not his doing, but his supporting cast, he has done nothing to show the fans that he has taken any sort of leadership role or accountability for the teams issues.

The slip screen is nice but our line sux real bad... Can they even sell an effective screen... We will see.

Actually, it's easier to sell a screen with a marginal O-line. Think about it... your goal is to convince the pass rushers that they have beaten the blocking, and have the qb on the run. If you have a poor line, it's certainly more believable than if your line is know to be solid as a rock. You only need 2 seconds of release and additional penetration by 2 or more linemen to make it work, as your blockers form in front of the intended receiver. Hopefully, they now have a free shot at the linebackers.

Much depends also on the aggressiveness of the D line in pursuit, as well... a very aggressive pass rush can fall victim to a screen more easily than one that focuses on containment. I don't think Philly has been that aggressive this year... otoh, the game film they are working from won't show much "screen pass"...
