Gibbs Returning??

As the Washington Redskins continue to quickly unravel, the man who delivered the team's only three Super Bowl trophies could soon be coming back.
Again.
There's a rumor making the rounds that two-time former head coach Joe Gibbs could be returning in a role similar to the one occupied by Bill Parcells in Miami. Gibbs would be responsible for hiring a G.M. and a head coach, and otherwise stabilizing the franchise without grinding away as a head coach.
We reported earlier this month that owner Daniel Snyder still consults with Gibbs, and that the two men had dinner in Charlotte the night before the Redskins' loss to the Panthers.
For now, it's just a rumor. And it possibly flows from the fact that it makes a lot of sense.
Then again, the fact that it makes so much sense probably means it won't happen.

anyway - i think this is just more spin control from the marketing genius that 'controls' this franchise

ditto!...as long as the GM REPORTS TO GIBBS---not Snyder
and Gibbs isn't the Gm.

Oh God, this sounds great... but:
Gibbs has allegedly never fired anyone before. Do you want the president of the team to be kind of soft?
On the other hand, Joe Gibbs is a good judge of talent for coaches. He's a smart man and people like to work for him. If he was the president of the team and could hire his own coach and general manager that would be a dream scenario.

Anything that kicks Vinny to the curb ... where we, the fans, could kick him again.
and, more importantly,
banishes Snyder from all aspects of football operations.
Well, except for setting the budget. He tells the guy in charge, "You have $xx million to spend this season. Call me when training camp starts."

I think it's going totake something like this for DS to even begin to get back into the good graces of the fan base...I'm hoping JG doesn't do it. IMO this franchise needs to put the 80's team behind them and find their own identity. I'd rather see Dungy in this role.

I'd be very, VERY, very surprised if he comes back. He might if the heirarchy is restructured. He set us up for years to come with good coaches (certainly better tha what we have) with GWilliams an Al Saunders. He had personnel in place to carry us thru. He turns his back and the owner and GM blew it up. Now the owner wants him to do it all over again? C'mon man... Maybe he can come back as a GM/part owner?

I agree but The Danny does not seem to trust anyone else but Gibbs. If this rumor is true then it would at least be a step in the positive direction and maybe buy a few years for The Danny to get more comfortable with a team President and GM in general. At worst, it would maybe buy a few years of competitive football.
I would rather one of the younger gneration guys. But anything that replaces Vinny is better than nothing.

Can't say that he's the right guy for the job. We need someone in here that will say NO to Dan Snyder. Someone who will tell him flat out that what he's thinking isn't going to work and here are the reason's why.,....

He's the only one that Dan will allow to make any decisions, though.

106.7 just recieved a text that said that Gibbs has a lot going on with Nascar, someone's racing team and his ministry for life. That pretty much says, I don't have enough time.

I'm kind of torn on this. It sounds great in theory.
My only concern is if Snyder stays as involved as he always been and this is just a move to give him some cover. Nobody is going to criticize Gibbs as harshly as they have Snyder and Cerrato.
You guys said it well that Gibbs need to have autonomy and be able to keep DS out of the decision making. Not just to make good football decisions, but its going to affect the people who are willing to come take these jobs. Quality people might be more willing to come here if they know Gibbs is running the show and Snyder will stay out of it.

Vet I'm not sure I agree with that there has been much speculation that Saunders was all DS and it played a part in Gibbs leaving...to me this move would be as much PR as anything

Then again, the fact that it makes so much sense probably means it won't happen.
Too good to be true.
If I was Joe, I would ask a stake in the ownership as a precondition to do anything. Again, that would make a lot of sense and, for that reason, it would never be accepted by Snyder.
Joe Gibbs put his unblemished reputation as a GREAT coach in peril the last time around. This time, he would be judged as a football executive to help make the most important decisions this team must make in the foreseeable future.
Forgive my cynicism but I must ask:
Assuming that such rumour has any truth to it, Why would I not be led to the conclusion that this is abut the ONLY piece of credibility Daniel Snyder can buy before he loses not only the current and prospective coaches, the current and prospective players but the fans as a whole?
If this was true, it would be another marketing decision designed primarily to save his bacon and it remains to be seen quite frankly whether Joe Gibbs, the fantastic coach, has the ability and the sole responsibility as an executive to make the correct decisions, or the owner is gong to meddle on everything again. Whatever is left of hisreputation is would be at stake and in the hands of a unpredictable egomaniac.
Joe Gibbs has NEVER been a personnel man for GMs,, coaches and players. That was Bobby Beathard's job.

It doesn't matter who they bring in unless that person has authority over all things football.

Is the "Ooooh, pretty ...." distraction card the only one Snyder knows how to play?
For as much as I revere Gibbs and his place in Redskins lore, I can't wrap myself around this idea.
There's no way to get a clear read on his second go-round because any NFL operation that has any input from Bozo Snyder and Krusty Cerrato is a fail from the get-go.

If and that's a big If...I'm guessing it's going to be BIG like Gibbs is part owner and in charge of everything football...DS will funnel everything through him...Gibbs will be the face and voice of the ORG.

If you can, listen to ESPN 980. They are going to have Mike Florio who ran the story and Bethard today also. The show is running now.

A person close to Gibbs, however, recently told me that he seriously doubted that Gibbs would return to the Redskins in any role because of everything he has going on with his racing team and family. The person maintained that stance in a text message I received minutes ago.

I just do not think that Gibbs is going to be willing to take this on - it would require time and I just do not see his family encouraging him to get back into this mess even for a short term, let alone for any significant amount of time away from all of them
this is marketing and PR at the level we have come to expect here
we are going to get some more BS from these guys as this season unfolds and the sorry thing is that's about the most excitement and anticipation we have left to look forward to here
