Horton Won't Start Sunday (Updated)
Chris Horton said he won't be starting against the Buccaneers on Sunday at FedEx Field.
Defensive coordinator Greg Blache confirmed Horton's statement, adding that Reed Doughty, who practiced with the first team Wednesday, would replace Horton.
Blache, who said that Doughty is playing the best football of his career, added that he didn't like the play on which Horton was called for pass interference late in the loss in Detroit. Two plays later, the Lions scored for a 19-7 lead.
"Reed's actually played better the last couple of weeks," Blache said. "And Chris has struggled a little bit. He had a play last week with bad eyes; we got a big interference call. He had an incident the week before where it was not a good fit. And it's not that we're down on him, but the fact that you have a guy in Reed that's so close to him, gives him an opportunity, gives Chris a chance to catch his breath, refocus and come back strong."
WOW but maybe a shake is what's needed. We've seen Horton miss on quite a few tackles and miss some things in coverage. TV commentators have mentioned that Doughty is all over the field making plays. That he is always flying to the ball. Hope this works out for us. Would love to see him get an INT this weekend.

True. Anyone who watched the last 2 games had to notice, whenever Doughty was in the game, he was around the ball.

If you didn't watch the game, you may think that's a bad thing.

This is a "nothing" move. Horton has played fine. Doughty has played impressively enough to deserve the nod. To insinuate that Horton would be benched over a VERY questionable interference call is bogus. To say that Horton has missed too many tackles is a stretch. Landry has missed more tackles than Horton and I don't see anyone calling for his head. This move will not help or hurt the team defense.

Not sure what that's about... but no one is calling for Horton's head, either.
The fact is, Doughty, when he has gotten his chances the past 2 weeks has been everywhere. Horton, not so much. No big deal.

Sophomore slump is all... He'll get right in there before the season is over.

if you wanted to shake them up I would demote Landry for a game. Horton has struggled a little but atleast he is flying all over. He had a MONSTER game vs the rams. LL continues to not live up to the hype. I would of demoted Landry for a game to try to light a fire under his butt

Doughty's play has been stellar since pre-season. I noticed that he'd been on the field a lot in the past few games. This just confirms. I guess the operation on his back really helped him. I read that he's been having back problems since he's been in the NFL and this is the first time he's not had any pain in his back.

Is Chris Horton the young guy that acts like he's arrived and hasn't done anything DeAngelo Hall was referring to? Not that DeAngelo can really talk all that much or that I agree. Just curious what others think.

Horton seems pretty humble and a hard worker to be the guy dhall was talking about. You never know though....Doughty is not so good on the backend (like horton has been) but a steady tackler.
What I dont like is that it takes one of our best tacklers off of the field. Besides London I am hard pressed to find a player on our defense that I trust to make the tackle more than Horton. The kid has a lot to learn obviously.
We will see if this makes an impact on our defenses performance, i hope it does.

I agree that Doughty has been all over the field and that Horton is still growing as an NFL player. Hopefully, with Doughty in the game, pass coverage improves and allows us to get off the field on 3rd down.

It could be Horton that Hall is talking about. It could be Tryon too since he is known to run his mouth. Westbrook finally made the team so he "finally" arrived. I would assume that it would be someone in the secondary and the young guy that has gotten the most play has been Horton.

It might be. I thought early on that Horton won the position too easily and didn't really play in preseason much...he's only in his second year.
Horton, has given up two big plays the last few games. He can also make the case that he stopped a big play (against Avery) as well. I like the shakeup nonetheless. Doughty seems to be coming on in my opinion. I would focus more however with the defensive line. Someone should be benched on the line.

I dunno.... He comes off very humble in his interviews. He could be totally different in person but I'd tend to think it's someone else.
I'm thinking he's talking about Laron.

That's what I was thinking when he said it. It just seems odd that Horton is the one in the secondary that got benched. I guess we don't really have a better option at CB, and Kareem Moore must not be ready to play center field. I didn't even think Horton's PI play was PI, he turned around a faced the ball before he made contact.

That would be my guess. LL seems to be taking backward steps. He wants to wear 21 but lacks the playmaking ability ST had.
And, too often, he goes for the big hit instead of the sure tackle, and seems to arrive late too often. I want the FS to break up passes and make picks .. and not just try to hospitalize a receiver after the catch is made.

LL just doesn't have someone behind him that is playing at an equal or potential higher level.
He's really overrated IMHO. That doesn't mean that he's bad... He skipped off season work outs, is very arrogant and doesn't make many plays. I think he's exactly who Hall is referring to.

Not trying to make excuses for him... if he's slacking, hopefully his peers will take care of that.
He was drafted to be the hammer in the box, to Taylor's long range cover guy and all around mistake fixer/enforcer. I think we assumed that, because of his speed, that he had superior cover skills, as well... Perhaps his attitude is an issue... but Taylor set an impossible standard for a free safety to live up to. We know that Blache does not always use players to take full advantage of their strengths... maybe that plays here as well.
Is it time for Kareem Moore to get some love?

I actually thought that Hall was referring to Landry.

If I heard that quote from anyone else I'd think it be Hall they were talking about

Horton is a good player and being used as a scapegoat - it sucks. I can name you a few others that need to sit their arses down:
D. Hall, Smoot, Rogers.........they all screwed up the last few games too. Tell me I'm wrong. But, I do like Reed - he's a survivor.

I'm not sure about this move, I feel like Horton is one of our best tacklers and honestly am not sure why he would be covering a receiver 50 to 60 yards downfield anyways to get that PI call. Doughty has played well and I don't have a problem with him starting at all. I think the bigger problem is that we don't have a free safety on our team. All of our safeties our strong safeties and playing LL back there is a mistake in my opinion and is wasting his talents. I get that he's the player with the most physical tools who "should" be able to adjust to FS better than the others but he's so far off the ball it's impossible for him to be much of a factor and the truth is he's not a ball hawk. But, I feel he's also our best strong safety, was drafted to be such and is where he should be played. The coaches need to figure out a way to coach another player into the FS role and use LL as he should be used.

I have to 100% agree with everything everyone has said on this board about LL. He has great closing speed but one thing he has to improve on is his tackling. I'm getting very tired of seeing him come in for the tackle, put his head down and leave his feet to make that HUGE hit. The sad thing is, this year it's been him flying by the defender and the sound of impact is his own body hitting the ground looking foolish.
NFL Network and ESPN both have mentioned that he isn't playing with fundamentals. Tackling has never changed. Wrap up and explode. That's it. I've never heard a coach say " fly through the air like superman and get that guy."
