Jason Reid just posted on Twitter that Zorn has named Malcolm Kelly the starting number 2 receiver (i.e. flanker).

I'm glad Zorn made this an official announcement. It sounds like Kelly has earned it by all accounts.
Anyone notice in the articles about Campbell this week that when they mention him staying after training to work on things, they always mention him working late with Malcom Kelly? What in the world is Devin Thomas doing??? hah. This was Cerrato on Reid's blog today:
"If you notice, every day he stays out after practice and works on things that need to be worked, that he didn't do well in practice," he said. "And he stays out there; Marko's always out there and Malcolm's always out there, working on things.
I expect him to have a good season. "
Anyway, I don't expect these guys to suddenly turn into Peyton Manning and Marvin Harrison or something. But man, how nice would it be to actually have a real passing attack for a change? I'd be very happy to invest in a Malcolm Kelly jersey...

Not to put too much weight into a blog post, but
Redskins Waiting on Thomas.
If Kelly can stay healthy, he has the potential to be a tremendous asset to the team in a position of pretty dire need. On the other hand, if Thomas is aware that the knock on him is that he just doesn't have the focus or the determination to make it as a pro, he's not letting on.

Well, not necessarily. I think many knew Malcolm had a bit more upside and that Devin was a slow starter. But Devin will be productive in this offense, and like Zorn said today, all four WR's will get significant playing time in his offense. But what was really encouraging in Zorn's comments regarding Thomas was that they are going to use him as a kick returner, which I believe Devin will excel at. I love watching Devin run with the ball.
Zorn praised Thomas as well.
Thomas grabbed seven preseason catches for 67 yards and also returned three kickoffs for a 26.3-yard average.
"I would put Devin in the same situation as Malcolm would call himself, in that Devin is really starting fresh as well," Zorn said. "He showed in preseason that he is somebody that we want to throw the ball to. I can’t wait to see him get out on the field."
Will Thomas play a role on kick returns alongside Rock Cartwright?
Replied Zorn: "He’ll be involved with kickoff returns, but I don’t know when that’s going to happen, whether it’ll be the first one, or the next one, or even the next game.

Yea, Thomas will be in on some three WR sets, and Mitchell will probably get some goal line looks. Kelly was a tremendous talent in College, had to think if he could get healthy somehow he'd be a starter at some point.

Sounds good to me. Mitchell looked good in the redzone. Great at positioning his body.

I'm glad Kelly is starting. He looked good in pre-season and deserves to start. ATL should become more effective in the slot being covered by a teams 3rd CB or a saftey.
Devin Thomas could be a scary KO return man with his speed. I see all positives with this.

I've been around to see two 'greats'....Randy Moss and Jerry Rice. I'll feel lucky if I see another two in my lifetime.

I love the balance that we have in this group of wide receivers this year. At last, there is a physical presence, good hands, speed, and the threat to not only go long, but to make those intermediate length passes that move the chains. And to make catches in the red zone.
Of course, that's all on paper - we have no idea yet whether the promise that we think is there is going to materialise. We have no idea whether Campbell is good enough (I THINK he is, but I don't KNOW), and we have no idea whether the starting offensive line will stay healthy enough to make everything else work.
But as far as the five wide receivers on the roster are concerned, this is the most promising group I can remember since, well, erm, I actually can't remember a more promising group.

^^^ what he said
as many here know I'm not a huge Campbell fan but at the same time I do think that he's a good enough QB and given the other parts the offense working well, can manage the position until we get a really good QB in here - I still think our offense's inability to score points last year was not mainly because of our QB but rather a combination of a lot of things.
The point here is that I hope that we are looking at the next group of really good Redskins' receivers in Kelly, Thomas and Mitchell and that when combined with the other pass catchers

ey Davis and El, a good offensive line and whoever is going to be an effective QB here, we will be able to both score a lot of points and also control the ball late in the game.
