Clinton finally lets Riggo have it...

It's about darn time too, Riggo just keeps running his mouth.
1. I love how Portis says that Riggo was running behind the best line in the league, basically saying there is no wonder why he succeeded. Burn.
2. ANYONE who listened to his show last year knows that he has a hatred for CP. It's really petty.
3. Riggo gets love when he would be considered a cancer today. If CP came to a meeting drunk you would all have a fit.

Yeah that's one take on it. Another take is that Riggins just isn't afraid to tell it like it is.
And yeah Riggins was running behind the best o-line in the league. Not sure where they were when Riggins was plowing over Don McNeal in Super Bowl XVII.
John Riggins has earned the right to whatever opinions he wants to express. Portis can tell us all how wrong Riggins is after he wins a super bowl.

Portis is the most talented back this team has ever had. I said ever. You can keep hangin onto those superbowls in the past but as far as im concerned we barely save face every year... Keep in mind before everyone goes all homer on Riggo that his last superbowl he didnt even want to play for the Skins that year. He came back to camp expecting to be traded. You could have put a billy goat behind that line and gained yards. and BTW I'm not sure of any starting back in the NFL today that couldnt break that tackle for a TD.
Riggo, I respect what you have done, but your not the caliber of athlete Portis is on any day.

Yeah, I'd actually like to see an argument that lays out why Riggo is better because I'm not buying it. Riggo had a better offensive line, better quarterbacks, better receivers, better overall teams and (arguably) better coaching.

That's what you call nostalgia.
I for one can't wait for Portis to break his record so I can bask in the bitter tears of the haters.

Portis is closer than I would have guessed. Probably gets the record sometime in 2010 if he stays healthy. Long way back on TD's though.

They are both punks. But they don't hurt anyone and both played hard so who cares.

At last check, individual accolades don't eran you a Super Bowl ring.
Riggins' championship > any individual accomplishment Portis could ever achieve.

They are different types of backs so any argument one is "better" then the other can be rebutted with the other's strengths. And absolutely, Riggo in gaining his stats benefited from all the things you listed.
One thing that Riggo was the best I ever saw at though was the 2-3 yard first down/touchdown pickup. Nobody could bring him down in less then that and the quarterbacks, receivers, teams and coaches or even the offensive line by the time he was hit weren't dragging the three guys hanging on him that far, it was him. That's been Portis's weakness.

Don't have a horse in this debate. The best ever isn't even being discussed here. Y'all are arguing over 2 and 3.

CP cannot hold Riggins jock, he (riggins) never complained and he did his job, he ran and scored td's when the def. was allowed to do use their hands much more than now. Also, the line had different rules to block by and they weren't allowed to hold as in the league today. When people say today rb's would have destroyed the competition be reluctant to make that assumption. Training, supplements, information, access to better equip allows all of these present players reap the benefits. CP needs to shut up and play. He's good for the first part of the season, but does he get the job done in the post season, not yet look @ Riggins stats in the playoffs, then compare him to CP nuf said

Riggins is a Champion. Portis is not there yet. Riggins was not made by his Oline though they we're great, he was great, anyone who says different should put on the film. Clinton needs to just say "John Riggins is a sb champion, I'm not so that's what I'm shooting for"

Clinton does not have to take crap from anyone. I love Riggo as well.
So like the other user said earlier, who cares?
I am more worried about our QB situation.

Riggo didn't win a super bowl by himself, so that arguement in not valid. Timmy Smith has a Superbowl, is he better than CP too? Seems to me that Portis can "tell us how wrong Riggins is" after CP passes his rushing record. JMO

Finally, someone with some intelligence. Thxxx Sch1977.
Anyone who discounts the HOGS in Riggins stats is plain naive. The HOGS were easily in the top 10 of O-Lines EVER, not just Redskins history.
I'm still trying to understand why the animosity towards either one of these great backs. They'vbe both done great things for the Redskins; why hate on either one of 'em?

I don't see anyone hating on either of them, just saying one is better. From my perspective, Riggins is the better back. The reason I say so, is because you have to look at them relative to their times. You can't compare them directly, because that's apples to oranges.

Well, The only person who CP trails is LT in regards to stats. To be quite truthful, if he was on a better team (more balanced offense) his numbers would be even better and even closer if not better than LT's.
Now, I'm def a CP fan and have nothing against Riggo but if you weren't a consistent listener of his show then you don't really know how bad and often he ragged on CP. It got pretty irritating after a while. Now that his arguments didn't hold any water, you could just tell it was a bit personal and came of as being a bit jealous. Kinda like a parent who is jealous of their child because they have oppurtunities that he/she didn't as a kid.
