My thoughts on Training Camp today (8/5)

I thought training camp today went pretty well. I took a few mental notes from the camp on certain players..

Offense -

- Moss looked very good. Moves were very quick and he was getting open consistently.
- ARE looked pretty bad. I counted 4 drops including a shore touchdown
- O Line was getting manhandled by the D line. Bridges was with 1st team RT and Rhineheart was 1st team RG.
- Campbell looked Good. A few times he held the ball to late and waited for the RB to get into the flats. He still needs to make quicker decisions, but his passes were on the money when he had time.
- Fred Davis dropped 2 passes
- Cooley dropped a TD but made 2 great catches
- Running game was not a focal point of this practice
- Biggest suprise was Keith Eloi. He was on fire today and was getting open and hauling in everything. Very solid.
- No Kelly or Thomas

Defense-
- D Line was AWESOME. Getting push every drop back.
- Haynesworth was getting doubled every down but allowing others to make plays
- Daniels looks VERY good. Getting pressure and solid vs the run. He might be the biggest recipient of Haynesworth.
- Orakpo was lining up at LB and DE. He was pushing Samuels straight back consistently.
- A couple times, Haynesworth was lining up at RDE, Daniels and Griffin at DT and Orakpo at LDE. This scheme was pretty nasty.
- Hayesworth was doing alot of stunts. He would fake up the middle, then go around the end. This seemed to confuse the OL.
- Barnes was only so-so. He made some nice plays, but got abused in some too.
- Tryon was getting beat inside by Moss alot.
- Hall was getting beat inside alot too....but only because he was giving a cushion and could not get to the slant.
- Biggest suprise was Jarmon. He was manhandling Bridges and even put Samuels on his backside once. He got to the Qb once and had several hurries. He smoked the RB a couple times on run plays too. VERY impressed.

Special Teams -

- Suisham missed 1 FG from 35ish. Nailed the rest.
- Raynor missed 2 FGs. 1 from 30 and 1 from 35. But the kicks he made were boots, he deff has a better leg than Suisham IMO

Did I miss anything?

Yes, yes, and YES! I cannot wait to see this defensive lineup in a game situation. That is one powerful group of men.

I too am excited about that. Daniels and Griffin inside will take up enough blockers to get Orakpo and-or Haynesworth in one-on-one situations outside. Offensive lines will certainly have their hands full no matter how those four line up. Or with Carter in the mix for that matter. Does anyone remember that guy we had at LDE last year? Jason something or other.....?? :D

And you've also got Carter and the supplemental choice (Jarmon?) in the rotation so everyone is fresh. They could also rush five, with Carter, Daniels, Grffin, and Haynesworth on the line and Orakpo coming from the LB spot. How great will it be to see some real pressure on the QB? I watched a Tennessee game the other day - just their defensive plays to watch Haynesworth. He didn't make a ton of plays because he was always at least double teamed and the other team would run away from him, but he really dictated to the offense. Plus, on the rare occasion that they ran near him, Haynsworth just threw the RB to the ground like a rag doll.

Geez... no wonder our o-line is dinged up and struggling.

I've considered that a couple of times... imagine how tough it must be for them to get anything going in practice.

So, how are they supposed to develop their mojo if they are constantly on their heels?

I don't think it's that big of a problem. For starters, the oline hasn't just struggled against the first team d, they've struggled against the backups and rookies also. Secondly, even on days when Haynesworth has been out of practice the oline has struggled. Obviously the defensive line is going to be very good this year, but I think that the oline problems go far beyond just having to face our D.

I suspect this defense is going to get a name. Its tough to say but, you have to figure game time adds another level of ferocity. If these guys are uncontainable in practice jeez. Everything I've heard so far sounds like they can get to the QB at will and I dont believe its because the O-line is that bad. You have to believe after practicing against a D like that Sundays will be a cake walk. As for Jarmon, this guy is going to surprise alot of people, we stole him, a 3rd round pick may have been bigger for us than landing Orakpo. We got em both IN THE SAME DRAFT YEAR! no way that happens any other time. Those 2 could be bookend starters for 50% of the league right now as rookies and be serviceable. This Defense is gonna need a name Im tellin ya.

I totally agree. It looks like Jarmon and Orakpo might be our long term DEs for years to come. Ill tell you another thing, Phillip Daniels arms are the biggest things I have ever seen

The problem though is that the offensive line is going to face some very good dlines this year. The Cowboys, Eagles, and Giants finished 1st, 3rd, and 6th in the NFL in sacks last season. The Panthers, Falcons, and Raiders finished 9th, 11th, and 13th last season in sacks. So nine of our games are against teams that had at least 32 sacks last season.

Sure, but they faced the same NFC East teams last year, plus the Ravens and Steelers. It'll probably be like last year.

I agree the O-line is a bit shakey right now. I just dont believe they are as bad as they appear at this point. The majority of the reps they are getting right now are passing plays, the coaches probably arent mixing in a fair % of runs to keep the defense honest.

Of course the coaches are going to address last years shortcomings in camp, the passing game ,pass protection and QB pressure. 1week into training camp, one of those 3 problems seems to be corrected already.

My concern is, can the offense handle the additional playing time they are going to have this year? It doesnt look like they are going to have as much time to rest.

THey'll be fine. When they start clicking and start holding their own against this Dline, they would mow people on regular games.

I'd say it's more of an "If" than a "when." And this line isn't going to mow anybody down. They may learn to hold their own, but they certainly won't be a dominate unit this season. Next offseason, we need to do to our offensive line what we did to our DLine this offseason. Then we can talk about "mowing people down."

Here's our Oline w/no sugar coating

Samuels is old
Dockery is old
Rabach is old
Thomas is old
Heyer is not great.

4 Old men and an average RT. That's what we've got. But The Over The Hill Gang was old too and they mowed people over right?

Samuels was selected for the Pro owl last year. Dockery isn't that old. Heyer is improving. I thik he'll be solid this yr. Thomas is my biggest concern.

Samuels and Dockery should be fine. I'm concerned about the other three. Rabach, at times last season, looked physically overmatched. If he is as inconsistent as he was last season we could have some real problems. Thomas is an injury waiting to happen. Heyer, to me, is nothing more than a backup.
