I heard on the radio today that according to the Washington
Examiner, the Redskins just cut Jon Jansen. Can't find it elsewhere.
Confirmed below.
Hey JansenFan...time for a new nickname? Perhaps RinehartFan?

I don't see any reason to do that now, as opposed to at the end of training camp. And I think it's cheaper on the cap to keep him anyway.

Wow! Maybe he requested it so he could try to hook on somewhere else.

Wow. What a bummer. Seeing as how the RT spot is a question mark I would have thought they would have kept him even as a back up. Oh well, I hope they know what they are doing.

I don't think so... this clearly indicates that it was a team decision...
"Though we have elected to move in another direction, we appreciate Jon’s commitment, leadership and dedication to the Redskins organization.”
Wow! I'm blown away. I can only imagine that the team is very impressed with Williams... or Heyer have made some sort of miraculous improvement.

yeah im a little shocked, I think it was supposed to cost us more to cut him than keep him. (Hopefully I am wrong about this)
He was also listed as the top Tackle backup and the back up center. I really feel unsafe heading into the summer with the O-Line.
The redskins do not have one single tested backup anymore. Maybe Barnes but thats hard to say since he didn't play last year either.

Hey CT: clean-up on aisle three.

Sad to see him go but I guess everything has to end some time? =(
I guess the team is ready to move forward at the position and there was no way we'd keep all 3. I guess the only bright side is that this will allow us to keep more depth at the o-line position.
I'll miss the guy, I hope he's taking it well.

It looks like cutting him will count $6.188 Million, while keeping him would have cost $3.413 million. So it eats an additional $2.775 million of the cap, if my numbers are right.
Got to wonder why they did this now. The only reason that makes any sense is if Jansen looked absolutely terrible. Even if Williams or Heyer looks fantastic, you keep Jansen for depth in case of injury during training camp. They'll carry 9 or 10 linemen on the final roster. If you figure at least one player gets hurt during training camp, the only way this makes sense is if they have at least 11 players better than Jansen.

Cap hit or no, I can only assume this is the precursor to another move, like signing Levi Jones or something like that.
Jansen's play had deteriorated badly in recent years and even in his prime wasn't a good fit for a West Coast offense. Still, he was a better option at least as a backup than some of the other possibilities -- especially if he's more expensive to cut than keep.
Again, this only makes sense if Heyer or one of the new guys just blew your doors in during the minicamp. Or if you're planning to bring in someone else. And if it's the latter, you better have the deal already in place, because you suddenly no longer have much leverage in your negotiations.

So with that cut the O-Line is:
1st 2nd
Samuels Heyer
Dockery Rinehart
Rabach E. Williams (only other center on the roster)
Thomas Rinehart
Bridges M.Williams
So that's nine, with Batiste, Burley, Clark, Montgomery, and Riley fighting it out if they keep a tenth. Heyer, Bridges, and M.Williams battle it out for the starting RT. I put Bridges there only because Williams is still way out of shape and everything I've read says they don't think Heyer is a starting player.

According to Williams he is now nearing his college weight and we're still a ways off from training camp. It's a bit unfair to say he's way out of shape and for him to lose the amount of weight that he has thus far says something about his mindset and work ethic.

I think Williams said he was 10-15 off his college weight. That shouldnt be a problem for him to drop before training camp.

Yeah but williams wasn't very good at that weight before. He got cut by the bills and then got cut again.
I am not saying that he can't be dominate but I don't look at the situation and feel comfortable which I believe is the case with most people.
There is some promise to the group.
Samuels can be dominate, Heyer still has some upside, Rabach is steady, Dockery is a mauler, Thomas is decent if he gets healthy. This could be a decent starting group.
But the back up center is non-existant, and the backup guards are iffy at best.

According to
this, Jansen will cost just under $11 million in dead cap space this season.

To me its more of an issue of not playing for years than a weight issue. If he makes it and I hope he does it will be a miracle.

That 11 million figure can't be right cause that would put us over the cap limit. So I am just going to go ahead and say that its plain wrong.

I read on the WP.com that Jansen was released so it is official.
My Take: I think it was a long time coming after his injuries AND I know people are focusing on the Cap hit but when was the cap the last thing that stopped this team from doing anything they really wanted. Not too mention I think the value they are getting from this move is the Extra Roster Spot.

Everything I've read about Williams comes off as if he had all the talent in the world but just pissed it away due to a poor work ethic. I haven't read that he was horrible or poor in his blocking. Most everything says he was injured and took plays off. Maybe it took for him to be out off football to get his mind right. If he is as honed in mentally as he's saying, I think he'll be fine. He's a big peice of meat, he's angry, he's coming in to take someones position, I like it.

Jansen must have not looked good this offseason for the Skins to make a move like this. Jansen will be missed, but I guess it was time to move on and give another guy a shot. I am just shocked at the timing of his release. Is there any benefit of cutting him at this time? Maybe the team feels like it will give him a chance to catch on somewhere else

Everything we've heard thus far was praise. This was supposed to be the year he'd come back to form cus he wasn't coming back from an injury.

I personally don't like this move. I have a feeling that he is going to go somewhere like SF or Houston and have a good few years. I wouldn't be shocked to see him in Jax either. Sure he's had a rough few years but he was injured. He's not injury prone. It's just he got hurt two years in a row. There were a lot of reports that said he had dropped weight and was in great shape. I just think that this team is aiming to get younger and this was the first step to do that.
Good luck Jon. I hope you find more success in the league.

According to
this, Jansen will cost just under $11 million in dead cap space this season.
Washington Post is reporting a cap hit of just over $6 million. $11 million makes no sense. When he signed in 2007, there was only a bonus of $5 million. They also bonused $4.25 Million last year. So there would be $3 million left from the originial bonus and $3.18 left on that. So $6.18 million. There is no scenario that shows total bonuses anywhere near $11 million - not sure where that number is coming from.
