Snee signed a 6 year extension last year, so unless the Giants cut him he's unavailable.
If there is no salary cap next year, then players must have been in the league for 6 years to be free agents. This will only be Merriman's fifth season. So Washington could sign him, but it would require compensation. The uncapped year also calls for teams to have one franchise and two transition tags. Between the extra years of service, the three tags, and the lack of a cap, there won't be a huge pool of top free agents.
The team has already had the opportunity to sign T.O. twice in the past few years. They did not show any interest then, so why next year?

I understand this is a joke, so I'm saying this for any future conversation of this topic when he is available...Do not sign Merriman. I repeat, do not sign Merriman. As much as I loved him at Maryland and overall the way he carries himself, I don't know if he will ever be the same player. As soon as he had his (ahem) suspension, I knew that the issue wouldn't be whether he would still be effective, but rather whether he could stay healthy at his present weight. And guess what? Surprise, surprise, he's got hurt.
This will continue.

I dont want any success in an uncapped season, it's just going to allow everyone to put an * next to it. To heck with that, win under the same circumstance that everyone else is.

The season would be uncapped for everyone, not just us. No need for an *

Due to the current CBA, during a non capped year no one under 6 years in the league would be a Free agent. If they are no longer under a contract then they would be a restricted free agent as long as their current team made them a qualifing offer.
In other words, no Merriman!
And H311 no to TO!!

Additionally, 2 of our 3 Lombardi trophy's were won during strike seasons... there's not * next to those. Bottom line, it's the same for everyone. The CBA is set up so that the pool of availible free agents will actually go down in the uncapped year.
This is not the same as saying that I'm hoping for an uncapped year... I'm just being objective. If it happens, it won't cheapen anyone's victory.

Well, whenever I hear them mentioned or discussed people tend to point out that they were won during unusual circumstances. That's an * IMO. They won a superbowl BUT....XYZ. Maybe it doesn't bother you but it bothers me.

I am sure if a person wanted to be anal and go through the seasons of each super bowl winner they could find a reason why they shouldn't have won games leading to the super bowl or the superb bowl itself. I'll take a super bowl any way I can get it.

Eh, whatever happens, happens. I'm so close to apathy with them that I just throw my hands up to it.

I have a feeling that you'd get over it pretty quickly if, come Feb of 2011 there was a 4th (better yet, a 5th) Lombardi trophy housed at Redskins Park... I mean, I haven't heard you complaining about "asterisks" around two of the 3 that they currently have...

I wasn't really around for those due to my age. I'm pretty apathetic about them, I'm sure its great for those of you who got to bask in the glory years. I'm part of the Norv generation, hence my mood swings and intense hatred.

Luckily, I was only exposed to the Norv years after years of success under Gibbs...

Ah, the Norv years! A coach so important that the Redskins wikipedia page mentions him exactly once: his firing. What memories:
Shuler our Aikman, Westbrook our Irvin.
The optimism of the early years. 3 wins, to 6 wins, to a 7-1 start.
A 7-1 start that ends 9-7.
Jack Kent Cooke Stadium.
"I get knocked down, but I get up again" on the stadium speakers.
Except Gus Frerotte - The Head Butt heard round the world.
10-6 in 1999 with a playoff victory.
Snyder buys the team.
Bruce Smith, Deion Sanders, Jeff George, Lavar Arrington, Chris Samuels Arrive.
Redskins preseason Super Bowl Favorites.
6-2 Start. Woohoo!
6-2 falls to 7-6.

Norv Fired.
8-8 and out of the playoffs.
Schottenheimer hired. Brad Johnson goes to Tampa so Jeff George can start.
It all seems so long ago, and yet so fresh in the memory.

I think thats where the generation gap is. In the midst of all the current day bs, you guys can relax and day dream about the glory years. When I think back, I think of...
- Shuler ramming his head into the wall.
- Irvin torching some dude down the left sideline. My dad took the small tv into the living room and worked wonders with the antenna so we could get Fox5 (dc station) from Baltimore.
- Deoin, Bruce, you already know where this is going...
- Trung Candidate
- The state of Florida invading DC...
My 1st breath of goodness was provided by no one else but the lengedary Joe Gibbs. He provided some good memories but they were far from "glory".
So when I go ballistic, just know that its because I'm fed up with being fed up. Watching the old superbowls on TV is like watching a documentary on dinosaurs, sure it existed and it's cool and all but I wasn't there for it...

My first years of memory of the Redskins are the latter years of Gibbs I. I don't remember Miami, but I remember Denver.
The days of 28, 81, 44, 38, 7, 86, 85, and THE HOGS.

Yes, that was Gus Frerotte that head butted the wall and gave himself a concussion. Gus Frerotte aka "In Gus We Trust" aka "The Gus Bus"

I always thought WAY to much was made of that. He scored a go ahead TD, was fired up and head butted a PADDED concrete wall with his helmet on and jammed his neck.
His head was fine. He hit the wall at just the right angle where it caused an injury to his neck. Had he head butted a team mate no one would have said anything.
How about all of those idiots that needlessly dive or do flips into the endzone. They are much more likely to hurt themselves than Gus was. Yet he comes off as a baffoon.
And it was Westbrook extremely selfish, stupid move that cost us that game! In OT, in field goal range, Westbrook rips off his helmet to argue with a ref that he was actually in. Mr. ref takes one look at the uncovered richard head and throws a flag. 15 yards and a punt, instead of kicking the game winning field goal. The game ends in a tie.
