Redskins issue statement on Cutler and meet with JC

The Redskins have begun the process of making Jason Campbell feel like the team believes in him.
Redskins personnel chief Vinny Cerrato acknowledged trying to acquire Jay Cutler today and said in a statement he had a "candid discussion" with Campbell.
"We told Jason that when Jay Cutler became available we, like many other NFL teams, spoke with the Broncos," Cerrato said. "We are all on the same page and we are moving forward."
Campbell told the Washington Post he met with Cerrato, team owner Dan Snyder and coach Jim Zorn in a "very successful" meeting.
"We talked for a long time about everything that had happened and the thing I felt the best about was that I got a chance to talk about what I'm trying to do, which is just get ready for the season and try to help this team get to that higher level," Campbell told the Post.
"Coach Zorn and (Snyder) all let me know how they feel about things and that's why I'd say it was real successful because now it's just about moving forward and trying to win. I'm going to be in this offense for my second year, coach Zorn has learned a lot, different stuff that can help us be more successful, and I just think it was real positive today."

They're going to trade him the 1st chance they get.

I do have to say it gives me hope for 2009 when I see how Campbell keeps taking this all in stride. I do believe he will have a career year this year. I just hope he can fix some of his issues throwing the ball. If he can start hitting WRs on the money he would be a good QB. Hes got all the ability he just has to step up and make some plays.

The Redskins could probably trade him in a package for Matt Hasselbeck if they wanted. (I like Hasselbeck a lot and that might not be too bad)
But they won't, they're going to let him play the season because he's got a lot of talent and they think he can succeed. If he does, he gets an extension, if not we go get a new guy... I'm uncomfortable with the arrangement as anyone but it seems like a smart approach. (Though I'd prefer a solid backup in case he goes.)

You would trade Campbell for a 33 year old quarterback with back issues?

I would love to see Jason have a Pro Bowl year and walk!! Of course the Skins will franchise him. But know this the price for resigning Jason (if he has a good year) just went up.

as a skins fan, wouldn't you love to see Jason have a Pro Bowl year, get over the hurt feelings from the FO as he still respects Zorn, and stay with an extension?
how does him walking, or having to franchise him help us?

I wouldnt be shocked if Campbell makes the Pro Bowl this year. Im just afraid once he would get the contract he would fall back down to Earth.

Why does everyone keep saying that he's going to the Pro Bowl? Even as a fan, I think some on this board are sounding delusionally optimistic. Many players are shopped around, end up staying and still don't get better. Many players can get motivated for contract years, but becoming one of the best from what almost everyone views as work in progress, come on? Based on what? He's a nice guy and works hard? A-holes wouldn't be in the league if all it took was character to win.
I'll settle for a season where JC does enough to open up the run so we can win some games. The defense has done its job the past few years, and the running game has always shown potential to dominate. Let's face it, the passing attack has been piss-poor. We don't need a Pro Bowl QB, just a reliable one. Let's lay off of the spiked koolaid.

I said it wouldnt shock me if he made the Pro Bowl.I never said he was going to the Pro Bowl. He still has some serious issues throwing the ball. At the sametime he is in a contract year and has a chip on his shoulder now. Im just saying it wouldnt shock me if he made it. We do have talent on offense. If the offensive line is improved like I think it will be he has a shot.

There is no way that I would take Hasselbeck over Campbell

Cerrato LYING AGAIN?

You are going to be branded by your fellow posters as an ignorant and negative poster.
Remember, the Front Office has made "some" mistakes but the future still looks "promising".
1. They are always knowledgeable and cautious about spending money -and- the draft picks.
2. Daniel Snyder is learning after all these years as an owner.
3. They already had a great draft last year.
4. They never make moves based on marketing value.
5. They are not in this business for the money alone.
6. They really, really like Jason.
6. They care about the views of the fans.
7. They never lie.
The future still looks "promising". I will not tell you how far into the future that is but I will agree with that. I have to as a fan.
I am going back to my slumber. The laughter awoke me a bit.

Edit:
And...
Cerrato LYING AGAIN? You are going to be branded by your fellow posters as an ignorant and negative poster.
CLL is not ignorant, but he most certainly is negative (well at least until Training Camp opens). He's already bearing that brand, RiC.

It does not take long to hear the two adjectives against critical views around here.
But hey, CLL, it is better to laugh than to despair.
Think of it as a
Comedy of Errors which tells the story of two sets of identical twins that were accidentally separated at birth. than a tragedy such as
Anthony and Cleopatra.
I leave you decide who is Vinny and who is Danny in each case.

Campbell has been around long enough that he doesn't need anyone to hold his hand and reassure him that everything is going to be okay.
He has reached the end of the line. Either he steps up now or he falls on his face. Sure he has faced challenges, different offensive systems, different coaches, lack of support, blah blah blah. That's the luck of the draw. The truth is that he has a chance, and that is all anyone can ask for.
It is hard to face the idea that a first round draft pick on a QB might be a bust, especially when there is a lot of hype behind the pick. When Patrick Ramsey left Washington, he still had fans here who had never given up on him. Many predicted that he would go on to greatness elsewhere. In fact he is a third string quarterback who will be lucky to move up to second string.
Maybe we could trade Campbell for Ramsey?

I think either could be the asp. We've certainly been snakebit for the Snyder era, haven't we?

I think my negativity <cough>realistitc expectations and views<cough>of a very average<cough>offense<cough> comes off a lot better and comical in person. Jake can attest to that!!

Hey! Why don't I get credit for my undying admiration and love of the defense?
To be honest, I really only have a deep hatred for the passing offense. Everyone else I'm pretty good about.

Agreed. While I (and many others) think it's time to hold an open training camp (which is different than giving someone the job, mind you), apparently Zorn is wedded to Campbell. Which means we'll see him play next year.
Either he performs, or he plays for a team like the Lions in 2010.

Zorn's time here is limited and he knows that he needs JC to perform.

Zorn's time is limited? Great. Another coaching and system change, huh? Wonderful... just what this team needs.
Going back to the Cutler/Campbell thing, here's an interesting little tidbit...
I had mixed feelings about the possibility of Cutler coming here, but the more research I actually did, the more skeptical about Cutler I became. We all know by now that he only has one more win than Campbell in just one more game. And we know that his numbers were astronomical last season, yes.
But by my informal count, only eight of his 37 career games have come against defenses ranked in the top 12 in the season he played them (and if you take the top 10, it drops to five games). Campbell had seven against the top 12 this past season alone, and still posted respectable numbers. Also, I'd hardly be the first to observe that continuity is worth a lot, and is something the Redskins haven't had a lot of in recent years.

Anyone been watching the re-airs of the games from last year being shown on the NFL Network? Saw the Philly game yesterday and watched the Dallas game last week. I've also got many games on tape. Campbell looked pretty impressive during those two games specifically. All you heard from the announcers were words such as "maturation", "impressive" and "poise". JC made some very good decisions with the ball during those games and contrary to a few assertions from around here, JC made some beautiful throws, hitting receivers in stride. Going forward, I think JC has a lot to build off of from last year.

Chris is exactly right "Zorn's time here is limited..." I like Zorn and I think he can succeed but I look at all those 3rd and 12s and we throw a 3 or 4 yard pass. Lots of people want to put the blame on JC for that but I think if it is me I would call a play that has everyone going out past the first down marker. Then again what do I know? I'm just a fan. Also, we did have other weapons some that Zorn finally figured out like Mike Sellers and others he never took advantage of like Ladell Betts. Ladell has good hands and can make yards after the catch but was rarely used. Poor CP, he will get run into the ground once again because we can't seem to give the ball to Betts 10x a game to keep him (CP) fresh for the second half of the season. I know he was hurt so use someone else like Rock or Sellers. Also, Zorn knew our punt returns were terrible and continued to use Randle El except for the few times Moss got the ball and look what he did with it. Why couldn't he split that job between DHall and Moss or even Thrash ( at least he doesn't run side ways) I will never know. I forget his name but we had a veteran receiver that led is in catches in preseason so how do we reward him? We cut cut him. He might have been old but I think he could have moved the chains for us even if he couldn't do much after the catch. Seeing as JC did not have much time to pass, Zorn insisted on him staying in the pocket to avoid and release. Well the few times that JC was in a shotgun or did roll out he did much better. I am not saying get rid of Zorn he is learning too but this does take patience and that is something that Snyder does not have.
I did see JC make some beautiful throws, hitting receivers in stride. I also like the fact when no one was open he ran for it. I also noticed that when he did get intercepted it was out of desperation and trying to force the ball and make something happen because at that time our running game was not working. Except for the tips. People say they wanted him to take more chances and it would have been more of the same. There was alot of times that JC did buy us some time and the receivers did get open and what did they do? They dropped it, even Moss dropped them at critical times.
Keep your fingers crossed though because maybe Kelly or Thomas can run the right routes for once and catch the ball and this will help Zorn keep his job.

I think Zorn is convinced that we are going to get a lot more out of Thomas than we saw last year because everyone knows Moss is not a true #1 wideout and Thomas must be making Zorn feel real good about that otherwise we would be seeing a lot more tryouts with guys like Torry Holt and others that are available for a reasonable price.
I also think that Zorn's play calling will be a vast improvement over last year AND that Campbell's play at QB will be an improvement over last year as well - the fact is neither has to improve much for it to be a lot better

- in my opinion they both had very bad performances and can do a lot better. The problem is that Zorn has a lot more upside as a coach in my opinion than Campbell does as a QB but I expect both to have "better' years.
I hope we can get a super RT in this year's draft and maybe add another 2 great offensive lineman in next year's draft - we are also going to need a great QB soon too - this team has a lot of needs going forward and right now they are mostly on the offensive side of the ball.
