Chris Wilson to move to OLB?

It looks like Chris Wilson will get a shot to play OLB. This could be a move that pays off big time.

http://blog.redskins.com/2009/04/01/greg-blache-talks-winning-frogs-and-strongside-linebackers/#continued

But there was one interesting tidbit, one that explained Chris Wilson's comment from yesterday that "I'm pretty excited to see how they're gonna use me this year" -- because Blache mentioned that the team was looking at Wilson to potentially help fill the role of strongside linebacker.

"Yeah," Wilson told me, "I'm pretty excited for that. I've played the position before, and it's all stuff that I can do."

Wilson, at 6-4, 246, is similar in size to 6-3, 248 pound Marcus Washington, who played the strongside position last year, so it makes some kind of sense, and he's also known for his speed as a lineman.

That makes a lot of sense. He has a high motor and reminds me of a young Marcus Washington, I am not saying that he'll end up a pro-bowler, but he has a LB build. That would open the door to draft a OT in the 1st round or trade the 1st rounder for Jay Cutler.

Yeah this is not a bad idea. Wilson was a semi- undersized speed rusher. He seems like he could do okay at LB unless he can't cover which we wont know about for awhile. But outside of Curry in the draft i don't love any of the pure OLBs. The two from USC might be fine but if you have three LBs in the first round i would have expected the USC defense to have been even better than it was. I mean they got completely tooled last year against oregon state who just ran the ball right over them and around them and through them.

I wouldn't mind seeing this but i still hope that Marcus comes back for a year they can use the depth.

It was the USC defensive line that was thin this year. Does not matter who you have at linebacker. If you have a thin defensive line the Oline will be five yards up field already.

I agree. He has loads of talent. I hope he can step in and make some plays for us.

I think this moved should have been made a while ago.
But I am wondering if he is mobil and fast enough in space and coverage and maybe that is why he was'nt moved there in the first place. Maybe more of a DE or 3-4 LB. Hopefully this works out.

He has great footwork as a DE and will be fine getting up field and persuing plays in the backfield, but he will struggle playing in space and reacting to play action, covering whell routes and those sorts of things... anything's worth a look, but it would be a project, not a near term fix...

This leaves us shorter at DE, though. We have:

Jackson :unproven
Daniels: Run stuffer
Wynn: Rotation, run stuffer
Buzbee: unproven

Carter starts on the other side.

This gives me more of an idea that we're looking at DE contributor @ either 1st or 3rd. Thoughts?

I realize he can still do it like Washington did and rush on 3rd, but still leaves us kinda thin @ DE.

We're going to trade our 13th pick and Jcam for Cutler. Thus, we loose a top linebacker prospect so we plug in Wilson.

Please front office....don't let Cooley or Landry go, as rumored. Jcam only and 1 pick...NOTHING ELSE.

Why would we give up any picks at all? Denver is the one that is seeking the trade. They don't have the leverage to be demanding extra picks. It should be Cutler and a pick for Campbell.

If we get Cutler it's gonna be Campbell for a pick then that pick, our 1st this season and another pick next year

It's going to cost... a... lot

It's been reported that there are multiple teams interested in trading for Cutler so the Broncos certainly have leverage in any trade talks with the Skins.

Exactly. This is April so talk of Wilson moving to OLB is all good and fine. We'll see what he does in camp and how he handles covering TE's and RB out of the backfield. R. Bush against C. Wilson? I shudder to think... But anyway, I hope he steps up, we need more success stories from players within. He could be a good situational OLB.

Wilson says that he has played the position before and it's "ALL STUFF THAT I CAN DO"..........

Oh, well in that case, let's pencil his name into the Pro Bowl then! Our OLB worries are over

Can he do it on this level, though, is the question.

Keep your fingers crossed for Buzbee. For a tweener at least he has a little size and five to ten more pounds couldn't hurt. He did get 27 and a half sacks for Georgetown but they aren't known for producing NFL players either

Even with Wilson at DE, we still need help there. He is strictly a rotation edge rusher.

I'd be more worried about Westbrook that we see 2x/year as opposed to a guy we see every coupla years.

Can any LB handle R. Bush in man coverage? I doubt it.
