Renaldo Wynn Agrees To 1-Year Deal

Wynn Agrees to Terms
Veteran defensive lineman Renaldo Wynn has agreed to terms on a one-year deal according to a league source. The Redskins have been interested in him for a while, and Wynn was a team leader prior to being cut before the 2007 season. Since then he's played with the Saints and the Giants.
He provides a wealth of wisdom to a group of defensive ends that is pretty young overall, and he might end up reunited with his good friend, DE Phillip Daniels, as the Redskins hope to re-sign him to a cap friendly deal as well.
Wynn played in spot situations for the Giants, who boast the deepest line in the league, but here he joins Andre Carter as the only DE with any real NFL experience. Wynn is a run stuffer and solid technical player, but at this stage of his career is not going to provide much burst.
He is as popular as any player to come through this locker room this decade, and will be welcomed back by offensive and defensive players alike. With defensive line coach John Palermo struggling to adjust to the NFL game last year, according to numerous team sources, after a career in college, Wynn's age and expertise should be a bonus in that regard as well.
The deal may not end up becoming official until next week, according to the source, with Wynn expected to join Washington's offseason workout program at that point. He spends offseasons in Las Vegas, but also has a home in this area from his playing days here.

I've always liked Wynn. Even though he is old, we obviously need help at this spot and he can provide good depth and flexibility. Welcome back.

I was happy when we let him go so can't say that I'm happy that he's back. He'll be 35 when the season starts. I would have much preferred to have kept Evans.

Albert Haynesworth is our x factor and makes everyone around him (all 10 guys) better. This guy is also a leader on the line. He can always be cut if we get a better guy. I like it.

Albert is not going to help Wynn beat the one on one that he already goes up against. He may be decent in the run game, but we need pass rush help. I see this signing as a waste of time quite frankly. Our glaring weakness on defense is the defensive line and their ability to get a pass rush. Albert will help with that, but he also needs a good supporting cast that is able to get somewhat close to the quarterback.

hopefully we will never have to see him play. Im hoping he is completely for depth and will be a backup to whoever we sign for our starter.

Welcome back Reynaldo! I like the signing because he's a known quantity and a well liked leader in the locker room. He'll most likely provide depth and rotation.

Exactly. He's there to be a rotation guy. I can't see how Cappster could say our pass-rush would take a step backwards...when no one knew who would be playing that spot anyways.

There's nothing negative about this signing. Quality depth and helps at run support. He's cheap, he knows the system and is a corner stone elder in the lockerrom.

We watch a pass happy league where teams score a lot of points. Next year we play teams that love to pass the ball no matter what down it is. He is a liability and all he will be is just a warm body out on the field that contributes to our problem of NOT producing a pass rush. Yes, he has experience, but he is still just an average filler player.
As others have pointed out, big Albert will make the whole D-line better. OK, I agree with that which is precisely why I would put a guy in that has better QB rushing capability than run stopping capability. The whole idea behind a dominate DT is to bolster the run stopping game. If they Redskins are serious about winning with defense, producing turnovers will go a long way in putting up some W's on the board.
Example: Quarterback hikes ball>QB gets pressured and has to get rid of the ball quickly>makes an errant throw and is intercepted by D. Hall> ball is taken to the house.
The bottom line is we need to create turnovers and the easiest way to do that with our secondary is to pressure the QB.

I am not really complaining, but I am just kind of blah about the signing. I just hate seeing the QB stand in the pocket all day and Wynn doesn't do much to help with that problem.

I am not really complaining, but I am just kind of blah about the signing. I just hate seeing the QB stand in the pocket all day and Wynn doesn't do much to help with that problem.
Sure, but he's not signed to pressure the QB. He's signed to help hold down the LDE spot during run downs. They'll have whatever passrusher they were going to originally have at LDE during passing downs...and with Wynn, perhaps that guy will be a little less worn down, because he won't be playing the run as well.

My complaints are mostly offensive oriented at this point. Mainly...
- I dont know how to feel about Jason. (This is the main thing that's keeping my enthusiasm limited.)

I think Renaldo's a great influence on the team from a leadership aspect, but we can't be expecting to get anything on the field out of him.
I reiterate, we are the only team in the NFL who can spend $100M on the DL and still not be able to generate a pass rush.

We took a step backwards, because we could spend time developing someone younger and that can put pressure on the quarterback. I applaud the fact that he is a proven veteran, but that doesn't help him in reversing his diminished skill set. He is just an old retreaded tire that I don't think will help us very much.
