It may just be an affirmative action type meeting, but you never know. He has done a heck of a job with the CB's this year.

CT has it. If a team offers a promotion to an assistant, there is no blocking it.

For historical reference, teams used to have an "offensive coordinator" and a DC. Over the years, Richie Petibon became "assistant head coach defense" and, when Dan Henning came back to the Redskins, he was "AHCO".

That way, the Redskins could sign Henning and keep him as long as, say, the Chargers, did not offer him a head coach job.

Anyway, Gray has done a splendid job. He deserves any promotion he gets.

And, anybody else notice the other, and larger, Redskin-historical promotion?

(Hint, one side was Darrell Green, and the other was...?)

Yup... I believe that makes 2 Ritchie Pettibon trained former Redskins DB's among the ranks of GM's in the NFL... Mark Murphy is the other. Congrats to Martin... (though it is Detroit)

I wish they would get rid of that already. African American coaches have more than proved they can coach AND succeed in this league. If owners want to pass over guys like Mike Tomlin and Tony Dungy then they're just idiots.

Thats one of the reasons I hate the rule... I don't believe it is necessary, and it raises that spectre every time a black coach is interviewed... "is he the token Rooney interview?" I'm certain that he gets the interview because he has earned it... and, frankly, I selfishly hope they pass on him, because he is one hell of a coach, and I believe he is a major reason we were 8-8, and not 6-10.

But it's such a shame that the question arises... They need to get rid of that rule...

No. Only if it is a lateral move. This would be for a promotion.

When WE offered Zorn the OC position, it was not necessary for us to offer so much as a cup of Starbucks to the Seattle front office.

However, when Parcells, still under a personal service contract to the Patriots, signed with the Jets, the Jets had to part with a first round pick, because it was not a promotion.

The situation for Grey and Detroit is the same as for Zorn coming to DC... Detroit would owe us nothing if they sign Grey to an OC or a HC position. However, if they hired him as a position coach (as he is now)... they would have to part with a pick or a player.

I see they are also bringing in Garret, and the Giants DC

This is just a Rooney Rule interview. The Lions were burned once when they hired Steve Mariucci without looking at any minority candidates. They're not going let that happen again.

If Gray lands a head job, I'll be shocked. But I could certainly see him getting a defensive coordinator position somewhere.
