This is my first post so lets get into this Forget taking a DE. I think it would benafit the skins much more if they went with Taylor. When was the last time we had a top notch safty? Just look in the divison with Dawkins and Williams we should try to measure to that and i think Taylor will do that. It would add so much to the defence. So let Take Taylor.

Uduze is a great pass rusher....but if you go defense with your pick, you might as well take the best Defenseive player in the draft in Sean Taylor..this kid will make the differece and turn your talented defense into the ravens defense.

Welcome! This is the best site for talking football and the Skins.
We've been over Taylor over and over and most of us agree he would be best for our first round pick. However, his stock has risen in value because of all of the hype and now the best projections put him as number 2 or 3! If he's around at #5, we should take him, otherwise we go with someone else.

He will be there at 5.

I meant 3 or 4, not 2 or 3. Hopefully he'll be there at 5.

Think about what Ed Reed has meant to that ravens defense...

From what I have heard Taylor is another Roy Williams except bigger, faster, and hits harder.

Taylor would be a great addition...but if you look at our secondary we've got springs, smoot bowen, ohalete...not the greatest secondary but a pretty good one...but if we don't get them any pass rusher's on the line...then there gonna get embarassed again this year...No matter wether Taylor's back there or not...That's why i would be in favor of trading back a couple of spots and drafting Udeze...the guy had 16.5 sacks last year as a junior...

Being a season ticket holder for the Hurricanes I have seen this guy in action and he is the real deal. However, with only 2 picks we need to trade down. I say take Udezie and because Houston is supposedly offering us their 3rd and 4th rounders to move to the #10 spot we can add a DT and a TE in there as well.

wow! that's a grand comparison and I would be sick if we passed on him and it was accurate
however, I have a feeling it's exaggerated

Do we really want to pay a saftey fith pick money? I say we need impact players at other positions more and should focus on getting more picks.

I was thinking the same thing. How much more would a safety at 5 cost over a DE at 10?
Anyone?

I love Taylor, and wish we could/should take him.
But we still need a few good blocking TE's, and we lost Kleinsasser and haven't signed Rasby.
We also need an edge rusher, and Udeze is the best available. We've got to have some pressure. The best we've had the last few years is from Bruce, and with respect we all I'm sure winced a few times last year watching him rush.
In the perfect world we'd draft Taylor, and it would be great if we would. However, I think we almost have to trade down to get that H-back TE and some more defensive lineman. Unless we sign someone else in FA. Either way I'm happy with this draft. Taylor would be the big prize, but trading would fill more holes.

I watched Smith get HANDLED by scrub second string LTs. It was sad. He was my hero growing up. He was a thing to be observed for its beauty. Then I watched an injury plagued NE Pats line make him look like a chick- apologies women everywhere. While his cap hit will still be felt off the field, his physical presence won't on the field.
No disrespect, he is still one of the best DEs I've ever been priviledged to watch, but his exit from the Skins couldn't have been more well timed.

As far as I am concerned, it does not matter whom we take - as long as we don't take them at number 5. My reasoning for this is rather simple:
1. Over the last 3 years we have spent huge amounts of money on players. Though everyone has theories on future cap values and the like it must be assumed that this spending will come back to us in some manner (backloaded contracts will catch up with us).
2. Over the last 3-5 years we have only approxiamately 10-15 of our own draft picks who remain on the team. Half of these guys are Round 1 and 2 picks and contract wise may as well be top free agent signings. Though that does not bode well for the success of gaining and then using late round pics, having young players within your own system is essential for continuity and controlling the salary cap.
3. The players in the draft itself. We have the 5th pick in the draft. In my view - there are four players that must go in the top 5 picks: Fitzgerald, Manning, Roethlisburger, and Williams. This does not mean that I believe that these are the top four players just I feel as though there is no way they should ever slip past us (Some team should be willing to overcompensate to move to 5 to get one of these players).
3a. If one of the quarterbacks falls to us it will be because somehow 2 of the first 3 teams refused to pull the trigger on the right pick or even a trade. A team may be more apt to trade up to 5 for the quarterback than to 1, 2, or 3.
3b. If one of the recievers falls to us we must take advantage of the desire for these players. They are both considered potential 1st overall picks. At 5, if we don't want one, there is absolutely no reason they should fall past us.
4. Teams with poor records (I refuse to denote us as "bad") get high draft picks so they may most improve their team. That means either by trade or using the pick. What is better - one potentially great player or one potentially very good to great player and good depth? We must not forget that we cannot assure any of these players will be great - that is why late round picks are so important. 1st Round ensures nothing.
5. We have needs (in descending order) at DT or TE (tie), DE, and S.
6. Picking at 5, it is most likely that the top player at all of these position (at least three of them) will still be available.
7. I love rooting for our own players. This aspect of course has no actual bearing; yet, we as fans love players like Rock and Darnerian because they were 7th and 5th round picks that overachieve and that we can claim as our own. They provide heart, intensity, emotion, and loyalty to the franchise - or at least to myself as a fan.
With all this in mind, why should we bypass the opportunity to trade down (assuming it is a possibility i.e. someone will provide a reasonable offer) when moving down 5-10 or possibly more spots would give us additional picks along with the top or second best player at our positions of need?
I would not be able to explain this either.
If we did do the trade mentioned within this post with Houston at 10, I am certain that one of (in no order) K. Udeze, S. Taylor, V. Wilfolk, K. Winslow, W. Smith, or T. Harris will still be there. It could easily be argued that we might have taken any of these players at 5. Even if we only get a 3rd and 4th Rounder - we get a player we wanted for less money along with two more good, cheap prospects.
In my ideal world we would make this move and then trade down with NE to pick up more picks and draft players like R. Starks and B. Troupe/B. Watson in the 1st Round. We could almost have a full draft with the number of picks we would gain (probably more than). We would grab a top 3 TE (and one that is more of Gibb's style than Winslow) and a top 3 DT while getting some very solid players in the middle rounds of a draft that I see as relatively deep.
Regardless, I am not at all against Taylor - I believe he'll be a great player. I just do not think that we should take him at 5. Any pick beyond that and I am all for taking him do not discount my interest in him. Watching the impact that the safties have in Dallas, Baltimore, and Philly has not gone unnoticed; those teams all have pretty good DL's as well though.
I know this is an eternal post but I just wanted to inform everyone at the site that I am thrilled to have found you. I am a long time fan that lives across country and no longer needs to check 10 different sources for all the information - though old habbits die hard. Now I may find all related information here with some great insight as well from real fans - something I have not found where I live. You do a great job and I thank you.

Justin, welcome to the board, great first post!! I agree with what your saying, and many here will as well. Taylor is a very popular choice here also, I would rather trade down.
As for the top 4 picks, I would put Gallery in and take out one of the WR. He'll be a solid OT for the next 10 years!!
Also the reason I like trading down can be sumed up in two words..Joe Gibbs!!

Unfortunately - the Giants are making a lot of noise about snagging Gallery - it might be a draft day bluff, but they had mucho major problems on the line last year and he would be a start to really solving them.

I do believe that Gallery will be taken before we make a pick. I was not trying to say that the two QB's and WR's were the best four players in the draft - simply they are players that other teams will surely be willing to trade up for. If Gallery or Taylor gets picked before we're up then one will be there and I feel we have even more of a reason to trade down.
