Torrance released to make room for Hall!!!!!!!!!!

Who Will Go to Make Room for Hall?

Assuming DeAngelo Hall passes his physical Saturday, which looks like a mere formality, the Redskins will have to make a roster move. To me the most logical move would be to place rookie wide receiver Malcolm Kelly on the injured reserve list, since he has not been able to do anything this season.

The Redskins had told Kelly they would give him another week to make any decision on his status and see if he can practice next week, but they could expedite that. They would ultimately need to add a WR at some point, but could buy some time.

With Shawn Springs able to play safety, the Skins could release recently signed safety Mike Green. Green has played well, but is an older guy who likely could be re-acquired if need be, especially since he was out so long recovering from injury before signing here last month. Rather than risk losing a bubble rookie like Rob Jackson or Justin Tryon or Kareem Moore, the Skins could part with Green.

(Spoke with people close to most of the depth rookies - Tryon, Moore, Jackson - who said that, as of this evening, none of them had been informed he was being released. The team could still be deliberating...but it could be they do something else).

They could also opt to release RB Shaun Alexander, though there is no guarantee Ladell Betts will be back for the Dallas game, and could need a week or two after that.

If it's me, I'm doing the Kelly thing, because I don't think you can remotely count on those knees or his production at this time, and I'd sign a WR from the practice squad or re-sign Anthony Mix for depth at receiver later next week, or sometime soon after that (like once Betts is definitely back, I release Alexander and sign a WR then).

What would you do?

My vote is Green. We can use Springs as a safety and CB, he has a high cap#. Kelly could be useful at the end of the year should we have injury issues like Moss' hammy or Thrash going down.

Kelley to the IR is the obvious choice, I think. Unless he really impresses the coaches with his progress.

Since Horton has had some injuries I think Green is safe in his job. With Betts still out, Alexander won't be going anywhere. And I really can't see Springs getting cut (especially since I have NO idea what the cap ramifications would be in that case), as when healthy he really is our best corner.

So, I'll say Kelley. But I could also see someone buried in the depth chart at safety or corner getting released.

kelly isn't even a slight possibility. even if he ends up going on IR, don't think of him as "Malcolm Kelly" right now, think of him as "WR 5 PlaceHolder". there is NO WAY we can try to finish the season (and hopefully the playoffs) with only 4 WRs on the roster, especially when one of them is James Thrash (whom i have loved since his first stint with the 'skins, but BOY is he useless at this point). that is effectively 3 WRs. Thrash should be considered nothing more than a body that can be placed at the WR position in the event of emergency to avoid illegal formation penalties.

even if kelly does go on IR right away to "make room for hall", i would have to assume we also go out and sign a WR (whatever happened to Anthony Mix? guy was a special teams monster last year, heard great things about him in the offseason, then gets banged up during preseason and vanishes) and make room for him. so in my mind, whoever got cut at THAT point would REALLY be the one making room for Hall. if that makes ANY sense, haha. it's just the timing of it "we got a WR who needs to go on IR right now, we got a new CB we need a spot for right now, let's make that happen and then we have a few days to find our replacement WR and decide who to let go to make room".

After last week's game: Jon Jansen?

Just kidding.

I suspect the majority rules in this thread.

Oh, this is a really good point that I hadn't thought of. #-o

Hmm.

Zorn's been not-so-subtly hinting at the Kelley move for some time anyway. That was my vote.
I understand the WR situation as described, and disagree with the assessment of Thrash. I think you'll probaly see McMullin back here before too long.

McMullin is still on Seattle's team I though. He is not practice squad eligible either.

I would like to see Cart get some carries and what was interesting was that last week he got in there. Makes me wonder what the coaching staff is thinking about Alexander. We know he can't block, but neither can Cart so who knows.

They can cut me... I'm ok with it, really. I'm a team guy.

I'm thinking they cut Green and keep him on speed dial.

actually, that's a really good point. we are carrying an extra RB. is betts expected to be back after the bye? if so, an extra RB doesn't seem necessary, especially since it seems like the coaching staff doesn't really trust T3B to get in there and lighten the load for portis anyway.

plus, what would make us think he won't be available in a month if we DO need to pick him back up?

Wasn't he released? I read it here, somewhere. Lemme check. I'll be right back.

Yep. Look down about halfway at the transactions. Give me one more minute to do a player tracker and see if anybody claimed him off waivers.

So far, so good. He wasn't half-bad, either. Colt knows him well, and I think he took some reps with the first team in the next to last preseason game, so JC can find him. He's 6'4", 215. Played with Minny and Philly, so he's used to the cold. Played college locally.
Could be had on the cheap. I remember Zorn saying it was a tough decision, but the draft picks had been so high with the other two birds he probably did what he had to do.

I doubt it will be Kelly. Kelly going to IR is probably the best thing for him right now but we will need another WR to replace him. Not sure how the two we have on practice squad Horace Gant, or Devin Aromashodu are doing as far as understanding the offense.

McMullen was let go by Seatle due to a hand injury...(possibly broken, would take 2-4 wks to heal so they cut him). He is available but unsure if he can step in right away.

As for Hall and who's spot he will take? Either Byron Westbrook, Matteral Richardson, Justin Tryon, or Leigh Torrence. I figure one of the practice squad but it could be the 4 or 5th CB on the roster.

Todd Collins.

What? Colt is ready by now, no need to keep three QB's at this point. 8-[

Without knowing the injury or healing status of Kelly at this point, I'd move Justin Tryon to the practice squad to make room for Hall. Tryon got abused in preseason and he could benefit from some practice squad time.

If Kelly has a chance to make some plays, keep him and move someone like Tryon. If Kelly can't go, then he's the obvious choice. But you would still have to bring in another WR and ultimately cut someone else anyway. And it's not like Kelly is going to be catching 20 balls a game. We've already seen Thomas out there with little participation, although I believe Kelly is a faster learner and would be more productive than Thomas.

So I say Todd Collins. Okay, okay... I'm joking. Geez...

Kelly to IR for now, and then TTTB when Betts is ready to return.

Rock can't block for beans.... I don't want him in there. The one play I noticed him in, he got ate up blocking a LB.

If Kelly can't go, we need 1 of 2 things to happen. We bring in another WR or use Davis more. 3 WR is unacceptable for a pro team.
