Redskins sign DeAngelo Hall

HALL TO THE REDSKINS
Adam Schefter of NFL Network reports that cornerback DeAngelo Hall has agreed to terms on a one-year deal with the Washington Redskins.
We’ve confirmed the news, and we’re told that it’s for the same prorated $1 million salary he would have received if he had stayed in Oakland.
We’re also told that the contract contains a commitment that the Redskins won’t use the franchise tag on Hall in 2009.
His selection of the Redskins resulted in part from the fact he grew up close to Washington, and that he was a Redskins fan while growing up.
Hall spent a lot of time talking with defensive backs coach Jerry Gray, and Hall likes the team’s extensive use of press coverage.
So, in the end, he’ll make the same amount he would have made in Oakland if he’d agreed to waive the injury guarantee applicable to the $16.5 million in 2009 bonus money and salary. And he’ll be an unrestricted free agent after the season.
And he’s playing for a 6-3 team that is competing for a playoff berth.

I think depending on his mindset, if he comes in here ready to play and understands that he is not the star of the team, this could be good. I'm hoping to see him latch on to London Fletcher to humble him a bit.
This could be a great move for us or a killer.

One other note, this works too b/c we are in a bye week and have about 9 days to get him ready to come in as say our nickle back.
I'm wondering what this means for Springs. Maybe his injury is worse than we expect.

I like it and I think he will be okay here. If he can be half of the person he was in his first few years, we will be fine.

He works the best in press coverage, and that's what the Redskins do for the most part. Not a bad deal considering it's cheap and only for the rest of the season. If he sucks or acts stupid, he will be gone.
If Springs can come back healthy, that's an awesome dime package.
And that also means less Leigh Torrence, which is great.

Torrance has played well. He had the one bad play. Hell, the coaches hung that play on the safety anyways. Matter of fact, it was supposedly Horton who didn't make the play.
But, Hall is an upgrade on Torrance. He also returns punts so that could help us too.

i like it, and he will be on his best behavior cause it is just for the rest of this year.....
he will come in here and look to prove he is still on top of his game and will look to score a big deal for 2009....
but the clause not to tag him, makes me wonder if he will be looking to scram the second the season is over.....worry about that later

I couldn't disagree more. Whenever Torrence is in the game, opposing offenses go right at him. He gave up a big play or two in the Detroit game, but I agree, not many other huge plays come to mind at the moment.

Given our CB's we have on the field at the time, he would be our weakest. I'm just saying he isn't as bad as everyone else makes him out to be.
As for Hall, he grew up in the Va. Beach area.

I think any free agent in Hall's situation would be foolish
not to insist on the no-tag clause. He wants to maximize his value and for that he needs to have teams competing for his services.

One other thing, its nice to see a guy who said on Serius Radio that he chose the 'Skins b/c he wanted to come home. He also said that he was a 'Skins fan growing up so that is also a great thing going into the game we have next against the Cowboys. He will be playing with some emotion of being on a new team and the lifelong hatred for the Cowboys.

I just feel so much better about our secondary now. I know it is only one guy and we don't know what he is going to do, but the upside is really good.
..
any chance on Springs moving to safety if he comes back healthy soon?

Now our secondary has four 1st rounders (Hall, Rogers, Springs and Landry) a 2nd rounder (Smoot) and an unbelievable 7th round gem (Horton)

I'm not finding a single on-the-surface reason to like this move.

You have to look at the defense as a whole not to mention what was going on with the team itself. The Raiders are arguably the worst team in football. They fired their Head Coach and the team was all over the place. Stats are one thing but play is another. He was a top CB in the NFL. That is why he as in such high demand. I'm not saying that he is going to be that player again but I do think that he will be able to help contribute.
As for Springs, I think we will see him play a bit at safety. I read somewhere that the team could go to 2 linebackers on passing downs and add a safety. Move Landry close to the line and help pressure the QB.

I am so excited now we have such a deep secondary. IMO its just as deep as Philly's.

Well, he played in a poor system for a worse team. What were Randy Moss' stats in Oakland?

That's more int's than any of our CB's. Only Horton has that many. And Hall is a two time Pro Bowler with outstanding career numbers...
For his career, Hall has recorded 276 tackles (243 solo), one sack and 20 interceptions.

How in the world can this be a killer???????????
We payed 400 grand for the remainder of the season on a 1 year deal who will play for a big deal. He's not our number 1 DB and he is a hell of player.
It is a win win situation.

I can deal with most of that as long as the intention was for him to be an upgrade over Torrence as nickel back. I think Smoot and Rogers are better options as starters.

Landry in the "Lobo back" role that Urlacher played at New Mexico (hybrid LB and S) has interesting possibilities.

im surprised none of you mentioned this already.. he knows how to hold on to an interception!! he doesnt drop em. thats the biggest thing he brings to the table IMO, is the big turnover play that we've been lacking. now if he can just not be a distraction in the locker room.
