Sources: Raiders look at releasing CB Hall as soon as Wednes

Angered by the Oakland Raiders' 2-6 start, team owner Al Davis asked his front office staff to explore the possibility of releasing several players, including cornerback DeAngelo Hall, according to multiple sources.

The Raiders are expected to release Hall on Wednesday, sources told ESPN's Michael Smith.
The process started on Monday, a day after the Raiders' embarrassing 24-0 loss to the Atlanta Falcons. Davis, looking ahead to rest of the season and to 2009, asked his staff to study a list of potential players who could be let go before the end of the week or after the season, sources said.
One source said the list included more than a dozen names. The Raiders' front-office staff studied the cap consequences of releasing high-priced veteran players. He also wanted his staff to see if other teams might claim any of these players on waivers.
The team was planning on making the move to release Hall on Tuesday before holding off, according to NFL.com. The Raiders have paid Hall $8 million for eight games, and also gave Atlanta a second-round pick for his services.
NFL.com reported the move to waive him now helps the Raiders avoid paying Hall $16 million worth of injury-guaranteed bonuses in his contract.
Hall has 48 tackles and three interceptions for the Raiders, including a season-high eight tackles last week against the Falcons.
Hall isn't the only Raider under consideration for release. Wide receiver Javon Walker received an $11 million signing bonus and a $1 million base salary this year, but he has only 13 catches in his first seven games with the Raiders. The other players on Davis' list are unknown.
At his Monday press conference, interim Raiders coach Tom Cable said he was thinking of making more changes in the starting lineup. Since taking over for Lane Kiffin, Cable has benched wide receiver Ronald Curry and safety Michael Huff. If Davis gets his way, some changes might be permanent.

You pay $11 million to a PROVEN WR, and he only gets 13 catches in seven games. Then you want to can him, without considering the OL or QB?
Then you want to waive a DB who has 48 tackles and three INTs? There is no other player on the team with more than 1 INT exept Hall. Seems to me like he's the best they have.
There is only 1 guy on our team with 3INTs, I guess we need to release all of our DBs except Horton.

Not that it justifies Al Davis' decision here whatsoever, but Nnamdi Asomugha is by far their best corner. He might even be the best cornerback in the league.

And I'm serious about Asomugha being possibly the best corner in the league. Football Outsiders have done quite a bit of analysis on this, and always make sure to highlight him because he's such a talent burried so deeply in such a bad team.

I know. Oh and it turns out that even though Hall had 3 picks, it's because
he gets thrown at a lot.With most teams choosing to avoid throwing at standout cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha on the other side of the field, Hall became a frequent target. In his last game, he was beaten for a 37-yard touchdown pass to Michael Jenkins on the opening drive of a 24-0 loss to his former Falcons team.
In his eight games in Oakland, Hall was beaten 40 times for 552 yards on 66 passes thrown his way, according to data compiled by STATS LLC. He gave up more yards than any defender this season and was tied for third worst in catches allowed.
Hall said earlier this season it took him time to get used to Oakland's man-to-man style of defense after being able to freelance frequently while playing zone with the Falcons. He had 17 interceptions in his four seasons in Atlanta, making the Pro Bowl in 2005 and '06. He had three interceptions this year, but frequently got beaten on big plays.
Tied for third worst in catches allowed, and more yards given up...sure was worth that 8 million they paid him

Carlos Rogers is making the Redskins FO look smart, as it turns out. Pacman is the better player, but he can't stay on the field (and helps wreck whichever team he plays for), and DeAngelo Hall turned out to be an overpaid, overhyped player.

Hall was drafted in 2004 the same year as Sean Taylor... I think you are thinking of Antrel Rolle as the 3rd corner in the 2005 draft

Who I believe has been converted to safety and isn't all that great.

I don't think anyone has posted anything saying he HAS BEEN released. The Raider went ahead and did it.
My question is? Is this guy better than our 3rd or 4th DB? Should the Skins consider him? I not sure if we would even have the cap room, but a dime package that includes Springs, Rogers, Smoot and Hall would be pretty tuff. Of course Spring may not even be healthy for the Cowboys game so that would move Hall up to nickel back.
I'm not saying we should or even could, but should the team consider it?

I'd think the two biggest issues would be (a) team chemistry and (b) money, in that order, should the Skins consider this.

Absolutely not. Way too expensive, certainly not worth it.

How do you know waht is cost would be? He just got cut by the flipping Raiders for pete's sake.
That is provided he clears waivers.
