Clinton Portis has a lot mroe patience in his running this year. I noticed with some frequency last year that he wouldn't wait for his blocks to develop, but this year he's doign much better. Thoughts?

I attribute 90% f his production to a competent passing game that defenses MUST account for.

He is more patient, the double tight formation is gone. As long as people think we may pass, and clinton has more space to run, he will be successful. Like he was in Denver. If we get to be prolific passing the ball he should have a real good ypc.

I think he's gotten a step quicker this year as well.

Yea, he's avoided all those nagging injuries until the hip thing this week, and that obviously didn't hurt his speed to much. Plus, with the o more spread out he has more clear lanes to run. He runs alot better out of a spread and never really fit the Gibbs run scheme. Although, i think his attempt to fit that scheme has made him a much more powerful and complete back.

I don't know if anyone remembers the summer but on Redskins.com they talked about Clinton spending the summer in the weight room. This was the first off season that he had ever lifted even back in college. I think there are of alot of other reasons as to his increase in production but I think overall he's just stronger than he's ever been.

PORTIS BABY!!!! I traded for him in both my FF leagues.. Gave away Grant & Marshall for Gennings & Portis in one, and gave away Grant & Burress for Steve Smith & Portis in the other!!! oh, and traded for Santana as well and gave away Jevon Walker! First place in both leagues is the result!!!

Portis is a man on a mission this year. Good grief! He is putting up sick numbers. I hope he stays healthy all year. Really want to see him finish as strong as he has started.

Matt Mosley gives a lot of credit to Mike Sellers for helping Portis with his blocking. Would you guys agree?

Portis leads the league in rushing yards(the next is A. Peterson with 684, and 3rd is M. Turner with 597), 20+ yard runs, 1st down runs, and is 2nd in the league with 7 TDs.... sooo yeah he's doing pretty good so far

Didn't he drop some weight to get closer to his Denver playing weight as well?

Clinton Portis is just doing what he has always done - whatever it takes to get yardage - he just stays on his blocks and follows the guy who gives him the best chance and all of a sudden he's in the backfield and the yards just keep adding up - he is showing patience and the line is doing a great job.

same old Clinton Portis - he's always been one of the best in the NFL - now he's more experienced and patient.

cha ching

I don't see this as being a NEW Clinton Portis. This is the CP that was in Denver. The Denver CP had a balanced offensive system. He had a capable QB that could keep defenses stretched. He had an o-line making holes for him. Clinton hasn't gotten faster, if anything he's a step slower.

We had the RB, we had the line we just haven't had the passing attack since he's been here.

I will never forget what that Green Bay saftey said in 2005 when MB was at the helm. He stated that they ONLY played the run cus they knew we would NOT pass.

One difference is Clinton runs a lot harder now than he did in Denver. In Denver, he never really had a rep as a power back...but man, he certainly runs hard here, and finishes runs strong.

I agree that he's a harder runner. I'm just saying that he could have been getting yards like this from the getgo if we had a passing game worth a darn. He's been a flat out beast since he got here. The line has been beastly too, it was just thought there were too many people at the LOS in previous years.

What's even more amazing is that our passing offense hasn't been clicking the past couple of games. Imagine what his yards will be like when we're getting at least one bomb a game to Moss. I don't think his yardage will go up, it'll stay the same but it'll take less attempts.

true dat - this is only going to get a lot more better

nice to see Alexander get a taste and I hope that we see a little more fire in his game also as reported by some

It's his strength-- in the lower body in particular. His legs are much more powerful. He's running through tackles instead of being tripped up and he's adding extra yards at the ends of runs. On money plays, he's a total demon. Right now, he's one of the better backs in NFL history-- an HOFer. Let's hope he can keep it up.

We've been noticing that at our house. I have many a memory of Clinton almost breaking the big one in the 05-07 seasons, only to be held up by a shoelace or a forearm. He is running much stronger this year than in previous years, in my humble opinion.

first carry he did for us he broke for a long TD... So I say this is a long time coming. CP does what CP do, he runs hard and gets something out of nothing. The difference is that we have a passing game that opens it up a bit for him and we also have an O line that is back from taking a season off coz of injuries. Well maybe not all of them but darn near. This is Skins style, ground and pound running. CP is awesome.

You know, I agree with that. He did get tripped up quite a bit in the past. I forgot about that.

AND the holes he's getting are just that shoe lace bigger and they are not able to trip him up as much as they may have in the past.

great blocking will add yards to your runs and it also will add a lot of strength to your body

Its just a balanced offense. Portis is stronger then he was when he was in Denver , a little older and wiser as well.

The main reason Portis has better numbers is the offense is now balanced. Portis always ran hard and always was capable.

Healthy line, and play calling has defenses adjusting. I would like to see a little more vertical passing. Portis can't keep this pace up, no one can....
