Some 0-Line love...

I'm not sure that our offensive line has played as well as they did on Sunday in any remotely recent game.

Let's try to remember that the Eagles had NINE sacks the week before last - they had ONE yesterday. Going into the game, they led the league with 17 sacks in four games.

Jon Jansen may not have liked being benched, but it somehow seems to have rejuvenated him and he's playing fantastic right now. He and Randy Thomas are just destroying people in run blocking and their pass protection has been excellent too. Sorry Stephon, but you have to stay on the bench again for a while IMO, you don't ever fix what isn't broken.

We OWNED the line of scrimmage again this week and if you want to know why we're destroying teams in time of possession, look no further than the big boys up front. Sure CP is running extremely well, sure Zorn is calling great games, but the o-line is dominating the trenches.

Hill66 and I were talking during the game yesterday and we agreed that Pete Kendall is the BEST free agent pick-up we have had in years (quick note that we both agreed that London Fletcher is too).

It can't be over-simplified, but the offensive line is a HUGE reason that we've rattled off four in a row.

My 2 cents

I've supported this theory from the very beginning. I've noticed we get more production from the right side (left is still dominant, but right is now a viable option) and this is still my reasoning for Collins doing so well last year (O-line finally had a set starting cast about the same time as Collins took over).

Did you see the surge they created on that 4th and 1...wow that was pure hog football of old and had me squeeling like a girl...I mean Hog.

The line wore down a talented Beagle front four and flat our dominated. I hope Betts and Portis sprang for a steak dinner!

Great thread. I don't think we can overstate the contribution the line play has made to our success so far.

Samuels and Kendall with Thomas pulling are road grading opponents. I bet if you look at the stats on run yards to Samuels and Kendall's side compared to that of Thomas and Jansen, you will probably see a disparity but I ain't mad. I think Jansen earned his spot back unless there is something that the coaches see in the film that may bring Heyer back.

If we can get the luck of health on the O-Line and Zorn continues to keep teams off-balanced, Portis will probably lead the league in rushing by season's end.

I agree, Jansen must stay. Heyer is the future but there's no way we can say that Jansen is out of gas. Jansen brings balance to the line.

I specifically watched Jansen yesterday and I thought he played his butt off, as did the entire o-line. I will not be surprised if Jansen earns his starting status back, especially after that performance.

another way of looking at it is that Heyer brought back the fire on Jansen. Nothing like a lil competition to bring out the best.

I think that Jansen needed the time to get his confidence back. I reposted the horrendous picture in the pre-season just so people could remember how bad his injury was. I can't imagine the mental anguish he went though doubting if he could recover form that. So many people are short-sighted and forget what these guys go through (me included from time to time).

If were gonna give this O-line some love, can we please try to get this ridiculous "Dirtbags" name lifted? Theyre coached by Bugel, these boys' are Hogs, plain and simple. They just hung over 200yds rushing on the best run Defense in the NFL, nuff'said!

I think Dirtbags is the corniest name ever if anything.

The Hogs were in the 80s. No matter what happens ever in Redskins lore, there will never be another set of Hogs. I don't wanna take away from the current o-line, but those guys earned their nickname. Let sleeping dogs lie.

they played great. What about the Grave Diggers, "we dig the grave so the other team can be buried"

Typically a team's O-line is run right, pass left, inasmuch as the Tackles go. Most QB's are right-handed, their blind sides are left. As such the LT is the 2nd most highly paid position in the NFL; he protects that blind side and therefore is usually better at pass pro than say drive blocking.

By contrast, the RT is usually more of a masher, and not as strong in the pocket. This is by no means a blueprint for any team, but if you look at offenses around the league this tendency does stand out.

My point was last year we were decimated at the right side and ran predominantly to the left. WIth a healthy and voracious Jansen back, we have full use of the line in the running game this year.

I understand, and I agree. Listening to Zorn's presser from yesterday he intimated that Stephon Heyer will get his job back once he's ready to go. I'm not sure that's a good idea right now. It will again make us one-directional in our ground attack. It's no coincidence in my mind that CP has busted out big in the last two games; defenses can't just load guys to Samuels' side in the box and stack him up.

Heyer is going to be a good all-around tackle eventually, but watching him run block his pad level is WAY too high right now as he engages his man. I'm not sure about his lower body strength but he anchors well in pass pro so I don't think that's an issue. But the strongest squat man in the league won't be able to move a guy or do much more than seal the end if he can't get leverage and be lower than his opponent. That's something I'm sure Buges is going to address in time.

This whole Heyer/Jansen debate has me thinking - why don't we see much rotation on the O-line as we see at the other positions in football. After all, D-lines rotate players in and out, but not O-lines. Would it be a good or bad thing to use Heyer and Jansen interchangeably, giving them breathers during games?

An offense has to be in rhythm. They have to play more as a single minded unit.

On the other side of the line you're simply trying to disrupt that rhythm and can be more of an individual. It's easier to plug&play players on defense.
