Is Portis HOF material????

I'm not sure, but Is Portis Hall of Fame material? He'll probably have 11,000 by the end of his 8th season (next year). If he has another couple 1,000 yard seasons after that, he's cracking the top 7 all time. He's one of the best pass protecting backs ever. He's one of the fastest to 10,000 ever (assuming he continues to be productive through the first 6 games next year). He actually has a chance of being the 4th fastest to 10,000 with Eric Dickerson, Jim Brown and Barry Smith doing it in 91, 98 and 103 games respectively. 17 more games and he's at 106 tied with the mark set by Emmitt Smith and LaDainian Tomlinson. He would have to average 105 yards per game for the next 17 games (or close to it). YTD, he's averaging 103.

He's definately a Ring of Famer. Any thoughts?

He also holds 'skins record for most yards in a single season......another feather in his cap............a ring or two would be nice

If he breaks into the top 15 in career rushing yards he definitely shouldn't need a ring. He could do that easily really. I could see him and LT breaking the top 5.

Its hard to say. Of course I would say yes, but it is not up to us. Look how long it took for Art Monk to get in. He has a couple rings and it took him forever to get in. These voters you just dont know how they will vote.

No, sadly. Maybe if he gets a ring or two.

The argument against Art was that he never had that "one momentus catch" as a receiver. He was too quiet. I don't think that will happen with CP. He is well known across the league and he does do all that is acked of him and then some. I think being more vocal like he is helps his case if he keeps along the path he's on.

I don't think you need a ring to get into the HoF. It certainly helps, but I don't think it's the make or break tie-breaker.

Barry Sanders doesn't have a ring. Eric D doesn't have a ring. The HOF is full of players who never won the big one. CP absolutely is HOF caliber, assuming he avoids a serious injury and has 3-4 more productive years. The man is a complete player at his position, and has played at the highest level for his entire career.

Maybe not first ballot, but if he continues as he has through '11, he'll be enshrined someday.

If he gets the ring, he's a lock. If not, it's debatable... Ark Monk is proof that it's not an exact science.

It's mostly about stats, not rings but a Super Bowl ring will help the argument. If his career is cut short, this thread will be null and void. He certainly has the talent but I'd like to see more long TD runs if I'm a voter, sort of like the "signature catch" argument for Monk.

Monk, however, was the first WR to catch more than 100 in a season and was the most prolific receiver in terms of catches when he retired (I think). So those were solid arguments for induction. Monk was a special player in terms of character and work acumen and had three rings too. Also, in recent years, Portis's YPC has been down. I think that has to come up.

I think best to live in the moment. The last two weeks have been Hog Heaven. It's a long season.

He's going to finish ahead of a ton of HOF rb's in yardage, there is no way they will be able to keep him out even if they wanted to, as long as he continues at about the same pace he is going now.

umm... Portis is like 26 years old. Isn't this a weeeeee bit premature? We all know he's a stud and will eventually be in the consideration, but that's many, many years ahead of us. For the record, I believe he'll make it, but we have a long time to go.

Edit: Just make this thread a "sticky" so we can discuss this topic until his induction.

right now, probably not, will he be I don't know. I think basing this is stupid because one can't predict the future, he might suffer an injury and never play again, he might get an injury and never be the same, when is he done? Its hard to predict when a RB will stop working, they just stop from no were. Another player might get injured that effects Portis performance also can happen, O-lineman, Qb, Sellers (he is his lead blocker and a excellent one too), Cooley (he is a weapon that takes attention off Portis), Moss (no down field threat they can line 8 in the book or have people push up). He might not have much time left, he is 27 and Eddie George was done at 28, some are done at 29, he might only have two good seasons left in him. He might play well for another 4-6 years, who Knows? I am not trying to do the projection rate because there are two many variables that can happen.

He turned 27 on September first.

still young tho. Has a lot of years left in him. If he keeps up his current pace, he should make it. Unless they want to pull another Art Monk on us

This is no more stupid than me telling someone on here to stop predicting the future and to take things one game at a time. Your response was that we are fans and that's what message boards are all about...Which way is it?

Potential is certainly there. He is going to have to keep it up quite a bit longer though and it's tough being a running back in the NFL. I sure HOPE he stays a long time, climbs up the career yard stats, wins a couple Super Bowls and retires with us, but all that's TBD. He's one of my favorite Skins.

If he can stay healthy which can sometimes kill RB's careers faster than a heart beat, then I believe he will get looks that is forsure.

*SEE: Eddie George-

Clinton needs to keep the pace hes on,BUT he may not play past 30 if he does. George was a bigger back than CP too, and I think Clinton may be a bit more violent, especially blocking. Time will tell.

I think if he continues what he is doing he is a definite lock for the HOF. I posted some statistics below about Portis which place him in a very elite class. Also factor in that he is in top 10 for reaching 8,000 yards in the fewest number of games played.

JAMES & PORTIS HIGHLIGHT WEEK 3 SHOWDOWN

When the Arizona Cardinals visit the Washington Redskins this Sunday, two of the NFL’s most accomplished running backs – Arizona’s EDGERRIN JAMES and Washington’s CLINTON PORTIS – will be in the spotlight. Both attended the University of Miami, won NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year honors, and have been selected to at least one Pro Bowl. But the similarities don’t end there.

James and Portis are two of only six players in league history to average at least 110.0 scrimmage yards per game (minimum 85 games). James ranks fourth all-time (115.55 yards per game), while Portis is sixth (111.47). The six players to average at least 110.0 scrimmage yards per game are either still active or members of the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Following are the six players to average at least 110.0 scrimmage yards per game (minimum 85 games)

Interesting stats, RR56. It makes me wonder: is Edge HOF caliber? Not to threadjack here, but LT is certainly a serious candidate assuming he has a couple more good years, and that leaves CP and Edge.

As far as the yds/gm list goes, Terrell Davis, LJ, Jamal Lewis and Billy Sims (blast from the past!) probably won't ever see the Hall. That one isn't as conclusive IMO.

Come one now... let's be realistic. JC, after 4 consecutive good games, is a HoF LOCK? You need to share some of that stuff you've been smokin, b/c it sounds GOOD.

There's no way you can quantify a HoF career over 4 games....
