so even though chris horton had a good week last week, they still want to start Doughty this week.. Now i know Blache is all about veterans starting and all that. but i can not believe they are going to start Doughty, that man is awful. even tho all of Hortons Ints, and his fumble recovery where chance cuz they were tipped and he ran and got the loose ball, its still way more than Doughty has done in all the games he has started for us.. thats just my opinion tho, what do yall think?

define "good".
CMilk, just givin' ya a hard time.
I, for one, choose to have Horton as the starter and give Reed the backup role.
He has certainly out-performed Reed. Maybe that isn't enough in the coaches eyes. Maybe they are giving him the chance to prove them wrong? Who knows?
Now I am wondering if the tattoo of "#48" on my ass wasn't such a smart idea.
But what do I know?

I have my issues with Reed but I don't consider him bad. He is definitely serviceable which is how I'd describe him.
I'd much rather him fill in for a couple of games due to injury than to be the full fledged starter.

I say yes he is good. At least until Horton gets some experience and consistency at beinga playmaker DB, I'm still not completely sold on putting a rook in front of reed based on 1 reg. season game.

We need an upgrade over Doughty and his name is Horton. I don't care if he is a rookie. He has a knack for making plays. We need playmakers and I am not sold on Reed's ability to be who we need him to be.
Doughty vs Horton

Doughty is a sophmore who has some experience. He did step in last year during probably the hardest time one could expect and helped the team. I think the other players, and coaches, appreciate what he did and how he did it: With class, without whinning, with hardwork, with team foremost in his mind. That attitude wins alot of points. He did not hurt the team last year.
That said, he did not look that good this pre-season. No one looked good in the first game. He did not play in game 2.
Horton showed in the pre-season that he is a rookie with some coverage mistakes, but he also showed he has game sense by being around the ball - and alot. That showed up last Sunday. There is a big difference between causing the fumble or the interception and being the beneficiary of someone's else's great effort. This is not, repeat not, to diminish Horton's athleticism and being in right position by making the most of the opportunity. In fact, I think what we will see is him getting more and more playing time and whoever is the best player will become the starter and play the majority of the time before the season is over.
Speaking of making the most of the opportunity, Horton is the only defender in the backfield in recent memory who has been able to do so. I truly hope that he does not make any major coverage errors (rookie mistakes) that might cost us game. I, also, hope that Doughty does not, either.

I think that for the time being, they will both be package players. Eventually, in the near future(with both players playing relatively similar to current performance) that Horton will slowly take over as he gets experience under his belt. I like Reed a lot still, but the best 11 have to be on the field to attain our best chance at success. Reed is serviceable at worst and he DID start for us last year when we needed him. It's waaay too early to deem Horton the next secondary savior JUST YET.

I would go with Horton. By giving the start to Reed this week, maybe the coaches are merely wanting to see if Reed can do something similar or have a good game as well, and if Reed struggles, go ahead and give the nod to Horton. I'm not saying the coaches are expecting to see the same results, just looking for a solid performance from Reed in a game that counts.
But I also see the the rest of the defense responding to Horton. He seems to fire them up. Another thing I recognized in preseason, when opposing QB's saw Reed one-on-one with a receiver, they were attacking Reed and throwing in Reed's direction. That tells me other teams recognize the lack of coverage skills Reed possesses. Horton, having played extremely well and securing turnovers, maybe other teams might respect him a bit more. We'll just have to wait and see.
"I'd be lying if I wasn't a little jealous," said strong safety Reed Doughty, whose illness put Horton into the starting lineup. "Not because he did well, but everybody wants to be that guy that gets two interceptions and a fumble recovery in a first game."
<snip>
Fortunately, Horton knows the play book — "I consider myself an IQ football player," he said — and made the most of his chance. When Rocky McIntosh poked the ball loose from Jeremy Shockey in the first quarter, Horton was the first to scoop up the ball. When teammate Fred Smoot deflected a pass later in the quarter, the ball floated right into Horton's hands.
With two takeaways on the books, Horton was approached by defensive coordinator Greg Blache, who said: "I need a hat trick."
Horton was confused.
"I looked at him like, 'What? I don't know what that means,'" Horton said. "He explains that's three plays."
So, when teammate Demetric Evans got his hand on a pass on the Saints' final drive of the game, Horton again was a ball magnet.
"I was in the right spot at the right time again," Horton said.
Blache approached him on the sideline again and said: "Now you know what a hat trick is."
Horton's other big play was all his own doing, a tackle on third-and-one that forced the Saints to put in the game's final minutes.
That was a great play by Horton as well.

Yes, Reed is a good player. No, he is not good enough to be a full-time starter in this league, at least not for us. That said, I am not opposed to starting him for a couple, even a few more games provided Horton sees plenty of reps in the process. After his 1st start against the Saints I believe its a certainty that he will.
Reading the blogs and dailies out of the District I get the impression that Reed is responsible for making a lot of the coverage adjustments in the secondary pre-snap. I could be wrong here but I think that's a big part of why he's still the starter back there. Until the rookie has a better grasp of not only his assignment but his teammates', this is a good thing. Reed isn't nearly as physically gifted but his (slightly) longer tenure as a starter at SS gives him the edge FOR NOW.
I believe by mid-season if not sooner we see CH ensconced at SS, and performing at a high level.

Reed Is good.
Is he better than Horton? Now, that's the question.
With all the offseason talks of how much Reed has improved. Well, We really don't know who's better do we?
We have not seen Reeds "much improvement". But he hasn't played in a regular season game yet.
If Reed has improved, He might be better than Horton.
It is my understanding that Reed helps lineup everyone on D. Fletch calls the calls, and Reed helps the secondary get in place.
That is a big deal IF there is no one else to fill those shoes. But, My feeling is that Landry can handle that.
I personally would like to Reed start a game or two and see what he can do with his "improvement" before I go calling for his head.

Yes he is good, he is in the NFL. So he must be doing something correct. But as I said, and many people have mentioned here on the boards...Doughty has to make plays. They both will play in situational packages, until Horton shows he is seasoned enough. With that said, I believe the secondary and the entire defense has a chance to be special.
This really is a sore topic for me, because if our brother Sean was still with us...
R.I.P. Sean Taylor

Great link. I noticed that in about 95 % of that footage he was wearing #36. So young and still so dominating.

IMO Sean Taylor is the greatest safety to ever play football, I've never seen another player do the things and play the way he did. My friend says Ronnie Lott but I've never seen Lott do what Sean did and Sean had much tougher competition. Reed Doughty is the salt in the wound of losing #21, it's like God said ok Redskins fans you're not only going to lose the best safety in the game's history, but you're going to start the worst in his place and like it. I'd rather have OH NO Jimoh at safety.

I really think this is going a bit overboard. Would you rather have Schweigert? It sickens me to see emotion clouding judgment.

It seems, and I think we saw, that Reed Doughty can play safety. Maybe he's not as good as Sean Taylor, but will be great for the Redskins if both Horton and Doughty turn out to be solid players.

Everyone who said reed is good is blind, ask Fitzgerald how good reed is, I'm dreading trotting his slow weak self out onto the field in dallas.

^^^^^^^^^^^^ I could not agree with a post more. I got onto my cpu and went to this thread to say exactly that. This guy SUCKS in coverage. He is a good special teamer and a good tackler as a safety but he is awful against the pass. He will be torched by the Cowgirls receivers.

Did you ever ask yourself if he really is at fault on that play? Does it make sense that a safety is covering a top 5-10 WR in the NFL? I would say blown coverage by a CB.
Just my opinion. But yours is too.

They were in a zone defense on that play. Fitz was actually Reed's responsibility beyond ten yards. I would say it was a coaching mistake to have Reed in coverage.

So it's ok Reed could not cover Fitzgerald because he's just not good enough, well frank who is he good enough to cover and when do we play them? Saying Reed sucks is not opinion ITS FACT, look at the guys body of work, 3 years no progress, only reason he's on the field is our starter died and we are reluctant to trust rookies, if we had any viable option he'd be where he belongs sitting the bench and waiting for kickoff coverage teams. I'm sorry but I've had enough of this guy, its not that he's a bad person, he's just a really bad football player.
Reed was responsible for 14 points at least the Fitz td and the Boldin td.

So, when you were playing Strong Safety for the Redskins, how would you have played them?
