Wade and Heyer Injury Update

Wade and Heyer Out Two Weeks
As for other injuries, reserve tackles Todd Wade (high ankle sprain) and Stephon Heyer (MCL strain) will both miss at least two weeks, Zorn said. That's a pretty huge deal to me, considering they are the second-string tackles, and with the first team barely playing again Saturday night, someone's gonna have to protect Todd Collins's neck.
I asked if veteran lineman Jason Fabini would shift back to tackle for the exhibition games, but Zorn said probably not, that he expects Fabini to stay at guard, where he ended up starting most of last season because of injuries. So rookie Chad Rinehart, who had been playing tackle and guard, is now a left tackle, Zorn said. Tavares Washington is likely in line for a lot of duty at tackle, too, in the next two games. If I'm Collins, I'm not loving this setup.

Rinehart did pretty well I thought. I'm not a talent scout and didn't watch him exclusively, but everything I've heard was either nil or positive about him, which is good at this stage of his career.

I thought Rinehart was great... Wade is a null point but it sucks that Heyer can't get any reps... He is one of the probably top 10 guys I wanted to see out there get some PT. tough break.

Heyer should be back soon. He left the field under his own power. I don't expect Wade to make the team.

I thought that is what we wanted-to play people that need game practice and to be able to look at film and decide if they are going to make the team or not. With Wade and Heyer only being out two weeks, they will still get practice in before the season.

Wade was an adequate backup and once he got some time to gel with the rest of the offense, he wasn't bad. I don't want to project him as a starter, though...

I wouldn't project him as a starter, but with our o-line injury history, it's safe to say that he might become one by the end of the season.
We have to keep at least two tackles on the back-up list, and I would say that Wade and Heyer go 1,2. We usually keep either 9 or 10 OL on the roster, so I personally think that right now it would be:
Samuels
Kendall
Rabach
Thomas
Jansen
Wade
Heyer
Fabini
Rinehart

Wade is solid at T position. He just didn't make a good G.
This could be good for the young guys trying to make a spot.
Heyer being out for two weeks in pre-season, not that bad. There are 5 games this year in pre-season.

We will probablykeep 8-9 OL's. We know who the starters will be. I see Heyer, Rinehart & Fabini as making team as backup. All 3 can play tackle. Wade can only play RT. We need someone who can play center. Crummey & Geisenger are trying out for that spot. If 1 of them makes the grade, he will be our 9th OL, otherwise we go with 8.

The coaches have said that they WON'T even move Fabini out to tackle while Heyer and Wade are out for a couple of weeks, because they want Fabini to get reps and back-up inside.
Geisinger will likely compete for the 10th spot (if there is one) IMO.
And personally, I don't really want an undrafted rookie getting thrown into action again this year. Heyer did an amazing job last year, but it's certainly not something that you want to count on. Crommey will be safe on the practice squad.
Rinehart obviously has a lot more potential to contribute, but he'll get plenty of practice reps if he's in the top 8 or 9... there's no reason to rush him.

Might be kind of huge if you're Todd Collins.

Rinehart was indeed solid. I would not be surprised to see him turn into one of our more reliable guys on the OL. He played his college days at UNI (northern Iowa) and they are a solid offensive team that has had some good passers, so he probably has some skills in pass protection, which will be crucial to the success of Zorn's offense.
He may not start this year, but he'll gain valuable experience and likely either give the Skins a quality backup turned starter in a few year or good trade bait. Win-win either way as far as I'm concerned.

The only time we would keep 10 OL's is if there are several injuries. Let's hope that doesn't happen this year. We'll have 3 who can play OT (Heyer, Rinehart & Fabini); 2 who can play inside (Rinehart & Fabini). If we keep another OL, I think it will be someone who can play inside. Wade can't.

Do any of you remember when Jason Fabini got pancaked in the playoffs last year? It was against Patrick Kearney. Then on the next series he tried blocking him with one hand on the way to letting Kearney get a sack?
I like the young guy Rinehart, Todd Wade is good too he is just a getting older and banged up,Samuels is rock solid, Jansen is good, Randy Thomas is a beast when healthy. Just Fabini is best as a backup.

I didn't list ten, I only listed nine... same as we kept last year, and the year before.
Rinehart's a rookie, and Heyer has almost no game experience... personally, I'd rather see Rinehart be the fourth man off the bench and not the third.
I also think that when healthy, there's almost no drop off in talent between Wade and JJ. I also think that while Wade's experiment at guard didn't go swimmingly, I'm not sure why anyone would think that Rinehart could immediately move inside and adjust... he played 39 consecutive games at tackle for UNI... he'll be at tackle at training camp with the second unit at LEAST until Wade and Heyer return... where will the reps come from?
I happen to agree that we need some inside help, but I don't see Rinehart as being it. And considering that the rest of the incumbents have 2 NFL starts between them (Geisinger), I don't see it on the roster either. Fabini is our ONLY viable inside back-up, so I don't even see him as an option outside - it would just mean making multiple moves if an interior lineman then got hurt.
I think Wade is first off the bench at tackle and Heyer is second. I think Fabini backs up the first interior guy to go down and if another went down, then we'd adjust accordingly, but I wouldn't be so quick to dismiss the possibility that Wade would then move inside and Heyer would go in at tackle. It may not seem like a great option, but I'm not sure how sticking a rookie tackle in at guard with no playing experience of ANY kind in the NFL, let alone at the guard position where he hasn't started a game (or maybe even taken a practice snap) for years.
Of course we all hope that never happens, but it's hard not to give it consideration in light of the last few seasons and the o-line's ascending average age.
I don't think there is even a remote chance that we would only sign eight OL to the roster. Too many injuries being recovered from.
We can probably sneak Tavares Washington and Crommey on to the practice squad and have added depth close at hand that way. Washington is the one working at guard with the second unit right now.

Rinehart played some guard in then HOF game. He seemed comfortable there. Wade can only play 1 position & didn't play that very well last year.

He played against scrubs at guard - late - that's it. Tavares Washington and rookie Devin Clark took the majority of the snaps.
And I'm not really sure how anyone could judge that to mean that he was categorically a better fit at guard than Wade, but that's your prerogative. Not only based on one game - but late in one extremely lax HOF game? The only reason Wade's 'troubles' at guard were so documented was because until Pete Kendall arrived, it just looked like we were going to have a potential weak spot on the line because Wade wasn't getting acclimated quickly enough - it was also at a time when the media had nothing else to write about. It doesn't make it gospel, and it certainly doesn't categorically make a fresh rookie a better option based on a very worthless game.
If we're honest, NEITHER of them are a great fit at guard, and right now in their careers, I would say that Wade gets the nod at tackle as well.
There's no reason to rush Rinehart, in fact, there's every reason to ease him in and develop the talent into an OL that can fill the tackle spot for a long time. I personally wouldn't even consider stuffing him in at guard and risking bruising the fragile confidence of a rookie.

Yeah, but I did say 'if' there is one.
And in my mind, there might be considering the fact that we need inside help and that Samuels, Jansen, Thomas, Rabach, and Kendall ALL had injuries last season, and that Wade and Heyer are on the shelf right now. That's 7 of 9, and one of the other two is an unproven rookie.
I'm not sure Geisinger can go on the PS again, that's why I didn't list him. If he's considerably better than Washington and Crommey, then to me its conceivable that they would keep a tenth guy (if Geisinger can't go on PS).
I admit it's not all that likely, and that's why I only listed nine... and if all of the incumbents look healthy at the start of the season - definitely not.

Well, give that Tavares Washington will see more playing time tonight because of the Wade and Heyer injuries, lets see if he steps up. Got to get over these annoying and nagging injuries.

Yes, we need inside help, & We found out last year that Wade can't play inside.
