The U.S. should stop arresting responsible marijuana users, Rep. Barney Frank said Wednesday, announcing a proposal to end federal penalties for Americans carrying fewer than 100 grams, almost a quarter-pound, of the substance.

Current laws targeting marijuana users place undue burdens on law enforcement resources, punish ill Americans whose doctors have prescribed the substance and unfairly affect African-Americans, said Frank, flanked by legislators and representatives from advocacy groups.

"The vast amount of human activity ought to be none of the government's business," Frank said on Capitol Hill. "I don't think it is the government's business to tell you how to spend your leisure time."

The Massachusetts Democrat and his supporters emphasized that only the use -- and not the abuse -- of marijuana would be decriminalized if the resolution resulted in legislation.

Sure, I've known pot-heads who have wasted their lives on Marijuana, but I also have seen people do the same with alcohol.

People can die of alcohol poisoning, but there has never been a single recorded occurance of someone dying from an overdose of marijuana worldwide.

I've never met a violent pot-head.

I doubt it will pass, but you never know. I've met several people like myself who don't use, or wouldn't use and who agree that the government should just legalize marijuana use.

The way I look at it is that people who want marijuana will get it, legally or illegally. So, why have laws that can't possibly be enforced unilaterally? Legalize it and let the police and the courts do something more useful with their time and our money, I say.

I'm in the same boat. I don't smoke pot, but I don't have any problem with others choosing to do so. It's the same as my views on gay marraige and abortion. I'm personally pro-life, but I am politically pro-choice, because people should be able to use their own judgement. I'm not gay and don't plan to marry another man, but if someone else is and will, why's that any of my business.

I would say legalize pot, because it is similar to alcohol. I believe the only reason the government doesn't legalize it is because it is harder to control. It is a lot easier to grow a plant in your closet then it is to brew some beer. If America truly is free then we need to let the citizens of America make their own decisions on what is right and whats wrong.

If people could be trusted to use their own judgment, we'd only need about three laws. People with poor judgment are the reason the fan shroud on your automobile is required by law to have a bright yellow warning label that says not to put your hand inside the shroud.

If marijuana is legalized, the first issue will be the age restriction. There would be one. The second issue would be the warning labels. Otherwise some "stoner" will sue the plant growers, the distributors, and the retailers, claiming he didn't know marijuana kills brain cells.

Personal accountability and responsibility are the ideal social platform.
Unless we eliminate the ability to claim ignorance and blame everyone else, personal accountability and responsibility will remain ideals, and will never become reality.

Judges who didn't toss the case because it lacked merit, on it's face, are responsible. Leftists, who believe that we must be guaranteed safety, and protected from ourselves, are responsible.

Congress, as usual, has their priorities completely askew.

This seems obvious, and not just because i'm an occasional user.

Well this isn't an easy decision. One one hand by legalizing drugs:
- We stop the major funding source of organized crime in this country. What brought down the Mob in the 30s was not Elliot Ness but the end of prohibition funding them
- We stop funding even more vicious crime syndicates who are destabilizing places like Columbia and Afghanistan and funding terrorists attacking us and our allies
- We stop providing the government with endless power and intrusion into our privacy in the name of the "war on drugs."
- We stop trying to tell people what they can do with their own bodies no matter how stupid they may be for doing drugs
- We stop spending billions on a futile drug war you can never win because you can't tell people what to do with their own bodies and you could actually tax drug users instead
- We end the terrorist control of the drug Lords over our inner cities and the endless shootings to protect their "turf."
- We stop providing the drug Lords with an opportunity to recruit kids into their crime syndicates.
- We stop teaching kids the law is not to be respected and get them used to breaking it because the politicians do stupid things like tell you what you can do with your own bodies.

On the other hand, we miss the chance to make a meaningless statement that we as adults are against drugs and we are willing to make any and all sacrifices (see above) in order to tell our children they are not responsible for their own bodies, government is, and if they don't do what government says government will put them in a government jail and government will prevent them from ever having a decent job again.

I don't know, it's a REALLY tough choice to make.

Who says it wouldn't be cheaper legal? You would have more competition in the market place.

Ha! Have you really looked around recently?

I don't think there are as many pharmacists and gas stations put together as there are people who have some you could buy right now.

We've had many board members who were also users. One of them loved to talk about Detroit and liked Waffle Crisp, Lavar Arrington, and Bob Marley.

I think he died from overuse, though. . .

Whew, at first I thought you might have been referring to me. Obviously I realized it couldn't have been though, I'm not really into Waffle Crisp. I like Bob Marley though, Red Red Wine was great!

Good point man.. buuuuuuuut... a charger wit 20% tints combined with the AC on 3 on defrost mode is one hell of a cover!!! LOL.. I mean, not that I know or anything .. LOL
