The Kansas City Chiefs have a "Fan Code of Conduct," which is essentially a list of rules that fans have to follow when they're attending a game at Arrowhead. In theory, it's not a bad idea, as you'd like your stadium to provide a friendly atmosphere for families and people who aren't drunken hooligans.

In practice, though, it might not be such a great idea, especially if the person responsible for coming up with the rules is an 85-year-old woman who teaches the 2nd grade and regards standing up as one of the evil things that young whippersnappers often do. Seriously, standing erect is the No. 2 item on the list of things that are prohibited:

• Standing and/or obstructing the view of other fans

Not only that, Pro Football Talk points out how seated fans can anonymously tattle on their upright counterparts:


The Chiefs also have set up a text-messaging system that allows fans who might be offended by behaviors like standing to report the situation to the powers-that-be.

Maybe they'll lift the ban when the Chiefs can field an offense that might actually score a touchdown every now and then and might give fans a reason to stand.

If you don't want to stand, stay at home and watch the game from the comfort of your couch. I've had people tell me to sit down at Redskins games, but I just ignore them. Seriously, it's hard to "cheer" from your seat. People have to realize its a football game not a freaking ballet! Stand up, get involved or go home.

I don't think it's cool to stand the whole game, but I also don't think that someone shouldn't be able to stand at appropriate times, either.

I agree, and I'd be willing to bet that's what the rule is really talking about. Are we really supposed to believe that the fans don't actually stand to cheer when the team scores a touchdown, grabs an interception, etc.?

I'm thinking this may be an ADA issue, trying to make things more comfortable for those who can't stand, but I would think they could come up with a better solution than everyone has to remain seated.

I'd love to see how well that works, since Arrowhead has long been considered one of the toughest road-games to play. I agree with previous sentiments posted that people can't be/aren't as loud when they have to remain seated.

I went to a Redskins and 49ers game the last time the Redskins were here in California and I was there with my dad and we were watching the game and then all the sudden everybody in the stadium stood up and I couldn't see a damn thing. I had to stand on my chair, just to see the big play that was happening at that time and to later find out that everybody stood up because some lady showed her breasts to the fans and then she was escorted out of the stadium. I think the standing has got out of hand. Again I'm not saying that you can't stand and get into the game and cheer for your team, but also have some consideration for other people as well they pay top dollars to see their team as well and when they can't see their team playing because someone wants to stand for no reason at all thats not being very respectful. If you are blocking someones view and they can't see then sit down and have some class.

i agree. i like to cheer and be loud but only when i need to be. im not goin to be standing when were on offense and its 2nd and 5 on our own 30. thats just dumb. and kinda annoying to the people behind you

So what makes your experience at the game any more important than anyone elses? If I want to stand in front of my seat the whole game, then I'm JUST as entitled to as you are to sit the whole game. I personally don't stand, but it irritates me to hear that any one individual thinks that they are more important than any other individual. Sounds like you want you want people to have a good time as long as their good time is not infringing on YOUR good time.

I am sure the legacy of RFK stadium wouldn't have been made if people were trying to rock the bleachers from their seat. Anyway, I don't stand the whole game, but I do tend to stand quite a bit. I agree with VetSkinsFan in that I paid for spot of concrete just like you paid for yours. If you would like to sit the whole game, buy a club level seat and sit with the old fogies.

Who says the time I want to stand and get involved will be the same time that you (Jeremyroyce) feel its ok for me to stand and cheer? There isn't a perfect situation so I am going to continue on as I do.

I made a point that people that are standing aren't just standing for their team or getting into the game. They are standing for other reasons. I never said that you can't stand and I have no problem with that, but I will say that I have no patience for anybody that are going to be obnoxious and stand for no reason at all.

I say if I'm paying $100/ea for two or three tickets, then I'll stand whenever the urge strikes me, regardless of where you or anyone else thinks my butt should be. That seat happens to be in front of someone and behind someone else, both of whom also paid for their SEAT, and deserve to see something other than your arse for their money.

Sure it's normal and quite acceptable to jump up out of your seat and cheer a big play, and no reasonable person would object to that. But to stand there like a freaking statue for an entire quarter or the whole game is rude and inconsiderate of the person behind you that wants to use their SEAT.

Yes, I think that is the point. You are free to have a good time so long as you are not infringing on someone else's good time. Why would you think that you actually have a RIGHT to infringe on someone else's enjoyment of the game?

They identify the tickets by seat number for a reason. They put the seats there for a reason. The seating is graduated so that everyone can see the flipping game when SEATED. And contrary to some opinions here, you do not have a right to block someone else's view for long durations simply because you think your right to stand and cheer overrules everyone else's right to see the game from the SEAT they paid for!

The bottom line is that rude and inconsiderate people NEVER see themselves as being rude and inconsiderate. Why? because the thought would never occur to them that anyone else matters but them.

I agree with what you are saying. I'm not against people standing at all and I'm not against people having a great time my only point is that the standing has got out of hand and some people aren't just standing because there is a big play or there getting into the game, they are standing for other reasons. When people have to stand on their seat to see the game thats a problem and thats why there probably is a standing ban. Because when one person stands on their seat, because they can't see, because of the person in front of him thats being rude and standing , then you got the person behind him standing on his seat, because the guy in front of him is standing on his seat. When I see people say you know I'm just gonna stand and if someone asks me to sit screw them, or I will ignore them. What is wrong with you people? Learn to respect and honor someone.

The simple fact is, football stadiums are full of drunken, obnoxious people. If you don't like it, you have 3 choices. Either make enough money to purchase yourself a few club seats, get over it, or don't go to the games. It's simple, really. I did not serve in the military for 32 years, where courtesy is a required survival skill, to be lectured by a narcisistic child who can't do give and take.

You obviously missed my earlier post. I never said I would stand the whole game jsut for spite. I said that if I want to stand, I am JUST as entitled to stand as you are to sit.

Should I look behind me and ask everyone if it's okay if I stand? What EXACTLY are your rules at a football game? Is there a set number of minutes per person to stand? what about visitors on the home side? Are they alllowed to cheer for their team? Please, elaborate why you're not the biggest wuss to ever attend a game!

Paying for a ticket doesn't give blanket permission to act however you want. There are certain understood rules for appropriate behavior that are implicit in the contract when you a buy a ticket. It's the exact same reason you can't yell "fire!" in a crowded theater.
