He seems to be injury prone & not much of a receiver, mostly a KR.
Looks like a development project. Long shot to make the team.

Great, a wife chocker is just what the skins need. Sigh

Is that when you put blocks underneath a large married woman so that she doesn't roll away?
As far as Mathis is concerned though, I like it. Rock does ok, but we need some speed and moves for our returns. It never hurts having two back there anway.

Solid move imo. He had a monster season in 2005 returning kicks. Hopefully he can stay healthy here.

He's caught 1 pass in the last 2 yrs. If he can't catch passes, he can't make the team.

A pro bowler as a rookie, he will push rock for the starting kr job. Rock is steady but doesnt have the homerun potential mathis has.
time will oly tell but i wouldnt read too much into this he might not even make the team.
now why not pac?

His value comes from his skills as a returner, not as a receiver. I don't think that he was signed with the expectation of him contributing in the passing game.

Same as always. Nothing has changed. He's still a thug.

I hope not he is valuable as a returner only

Well somebody has to fill brandon lloyd's role as team turd. In fact this guy makes brandon look heroic. IMO character matters and this guy should still be out of the league.
But let's hope he isn't who circumstances say he is and the young man is ready to reclaim his career. Sellers did it and he's one of my all time favorite Redskins. Time will tell.

Mathis has had two recent run-ins with the law. In December, he received a misdemeanor citation after his pit bull chewed through a fence and was behaving aggressively. In February, he was charged with assaulting his pregnant common-law wife, a charge that was later dropped at the woman’s request.
These aren't even remotely in the same ballpark as other offenses we've been seeing recently.
His dog chewed through a fence. Dogs do that. Misdemeanor citation - fancy terminology for a ticket. I'm sure one or two of us have had one of those before.
His wife dropped the charges. Whatever the reason for her doing so, that means no crime was committed. No charges filed = no record. The same cannot be said for Henry, Jones, Wright, insert name here.
If Mathis works out in any capacity, that is one less draft concern. If by some chance he can be both a returner and a receiver, all the better. Two needs with one player. And if he doesn't work out, at least it won't be for lack of trying on the part of the Redskins.

Why re-sign Rock to be primarily a KR and then go sign a free agent whose worth is only as a KR? Seems like a "nothing" move. He will either get cut or beat out Rock as KR, in which case, we will have too much money invested in KR's.

you guys are surprised he's a little thuggish?
The kids from Hampton...no brainer.
Like the signing.....Maybe he'll do PR instead of ARE? Just a thought. Like Rock's KR abilities but when Mathis is on he's really good.
Conclusion.....doesn't make the team! Arena Football next!

I read an interesting perspective this morning. A piece of that...
Legal issues aside, the Redskins already have a competent kick returner in Rock Cartwright, who the team just re-signed to multi-year contract. Granted, the contract was not a blockbuster, but it also wasn't the type of contract that would allow the Redskins to just cast him off.
Is there something else to this signing or is it just roster fodder?
Could it be that the vague rumors of Ladell Betts being on the block are true?
If Betts were traded, and Rock was shifted to Clinton Portis' primary backup, then I could see the need for a new kick returner.
To me, it has to be either that, or, that the Redskins clearly just want someone to push Rock Cartwright to improve even more.
If Betts were to be traded, aside from what you might get in return for him, that could also be a chance for Marcus Mason, a kid I like a lot.
Today's NFL is about speed. Mathis has got that. He could be a huge factor in our return game. I'll wait and see what happens.

Let's also not forget that Thrash was one of Gibbs' guys. Perhaps he isn't going to be here next season. Just speculation on my part but with a new head coach you never know.

I like the Mathis signing, it gives us more speed at KR and Wr, another toy for Zorn and Campbell, in the west coast offense you don't really need great hands because youre getting 5 and 6 yard dump offs then if you have break away speed.... Touchdown. Mathis will make the team.

anybody notice the skins official site is the only one not to mention his run ins with the law?

does that suprise you? Maybe they should have a huge article detailing all of his bad qualities and run ins with the law.....

I just figured out why we signed Mathis. We have Mann, McMullen, Moss & Mix on our roster. Obviously we're going to corner the market on WR with the last initial "M".

I don't understand why everyone is so upset about this signing. I only know of the two arrests he's had, one in which his dog got out and the other one was about an issue with an ex girlfriend. The dog issue is a non issue for me. Hell, my Dogs ran out of my front door a few times and I'm a good guy.
As for the Ex Girlfriend, those are sticky issues. In some states, if someone just makes the claim that you "Attacked" them, you are going to jail. No questions asked.
My Cousin's a cop and he's told me several times that this one lady had called the police on a few boyfriends and said they hit her. Well one guy video taped her and she was the aggressor. When he pushed her away I guess his nail may have scratched her or something but she used that as her main way to show he touched her. But he had a video tape and proved her wrong.
All I'm trying to say is you never know with those sort of things. If you see a woman and she's got the crap beat out of her, thats one thing but this issue sounds like its a he said she said. And, with the charges being dropped, thats even more reason to believe that it was blown out of proportion.

I'm not going to speak to the severity of his alleged incident but I've got to believe the team did its due diligence here, as patient as they've been this off-season, I can't imagine they've abandoned that now to make a relatively low-impact signing.

That's actually a battle I've waged for a couple of years now, I think the tales of Skins' FO incompetence are greatly exaggerated
