Green Bay Packers quarterback Brett Favre has decided to retire, ESPN's Chris Mortensen is reporting.

Mortensen reported that according to Favre's agent, Bus Cook, Favre has informed Packers coach Mike McCarthy of his decision.

Foxsports.com first reported Favre's decision.

Kind of crazy but not the most unexpected. If I were our HC, I would imagine we could get a decent pick for Collins in a trade. That would allow GB to have a quality starter this year and then draft a QB to groom for next season.

It would really come down to what they were offering and would have to be at least a 3rd. If anything less, its not worth it.

Why, are they planning to dump Aaron Rodgers? He's gotta be the happiest guy in Green Bay right now.

The few plays that I've seen him make were far from good. But just a thought.

There is not a chance in the world of Green Bay wanting to have Collins - he's a decent back up for us but he would not even make their team as the 4th QB IF they decided to have 4

You cannot measure QB talent in that way - certain QBs do not suit a lot of other teams and Collins is just a very good back up for us BUT he would not suit very many teams at all even as a back up, much less a starter

Are you implying that Aaron Rodgers is Quarterback Jesus? I think he's going to be more like, "Jesus, we need a quarterback in Green Bay." But realistically, anyone attempting to fill the shoes of Brett Favre is in for a rough time with Green Bay fans.

Thankyou for the memories Favre. Even know that I am a hugh Redskins fan, I did enjoy watching Favre.

One of my favorite Super Bowl moments was watching him run down the field with his helmet held high after throwing that first touchdown pass vs. the Patriots. He was just out there having fun.

So now it's Aaron Rodgers time in Green Bay. In the Packers loss to the Cowboys last November, the former first-rounder was actually more effective than Favre.

A lot has changed in three years. Rodgers has worked hard to become a solid quarterback and earn the respect of his teammates. In preseason this year he finally looked like a starting NFL quarterback should, and in relief for an injured Favre against the Dallas Cowboys, Rodgers looked pretty good. He should have a good stable of wide receivers returning, and a solid running game with Ryan Grant.

Rodgers may not be the next coming of... well... Favre or Montana, but he is a 1st round pick and has played better over the past few years, when he was actually able to play, that is. He will definitely get the nod this year, and if he does turn out to be a failure, then that'll sure be a huge waste of a 1st rounder.

Anytime a "great one" leaves the game, it is a somber moment. Favre was a charismatic person and was good for the game. No doubt he is a future hall of famer. Probably a first balloter. It had to be a hard decision for the man, because I know he loves football. The mind and body can only take so much from the media, fans, and getting pummeled by defensive lineman. So well Favre as the game and fans of the game will miss you.

Nobody could improvise like Favre.

Not at all - I truly hope that Rodgers works out to be great - having a great QB in Green Bay is good for the NFL. I just do not think Collins is on any list of QBs for this team.

It's going to tough for anybody leading that team for a while and they will need a good back up QB - I just do not see them trading a pick (or even a water boy) for Collins

I've always admired how he played. His passion and the enthusiasm for the game was always his trademark. I truly believe that he is the last of the "throwback" type players, old school in toughness.

He does however lack Favre's toughness...and his catfish-like grin.

Saw some of Brett's press conference today in which he officially announced his retirement. Gotta say I really like the guy and will genuinely miss watching him play.

im gonna miss how he ran around the field like a kid playing the game. it always seemed like he was playing because he was having fun. in his presser he said last season was really stressfull. if he were to lose that child like glow as he booked it out of the pocket it wouldnt have been fun to watch anymore. i hope he has as much fun in retierment as he gave me on the field

I am truly saddened to hear him retire. I really hope he comes back. He still has alot left in the tank. Even though I am a Skins fan I loved the way Farve played the game. True competitor true football player.
