Redskins Screw Over Byner?!?!

Also, though Earnest Byner did in fact go to Redskins Park to sign his contract last week - the one-year offer that was on the table - league sources said the team then balked at him. The Redskins are trying to land Seattle RB Coach Stump Mitchell to do that job here, league sources said, and he too is close to Zorn and has worked with him for many years. The Redskins would like to convince the Seahawks to do a coaching swap of sorts, with Byner landing in Seattle (all of this, again, is ridiculously unfair to Byner,) with Mitchell going here and Byner going there.

First, I love Byner and hope for the best. But this is a business, not summer camp. Byner knows that. Things happen and plans change. This wasn't intentional just to screw him over. Sometimes in business, the direction changes and you must take appropriate measures. I'm sure they'll take care of him and help him in his future endeavors.

Goes to show the real human quality of our FO.

Byner did a good job here. He did a good job when he played here. And now you treat him like this?

Man, I agree this a bussiness, but you can´t treat people like that.

On a personal level, yeah, I agree this sucks and seems unfair. But at the end of the day, this is a business and a game. If Zorn deems it appropriate to have a RB coach more conducive to his scheme, so be it. In this system, RB's have much different responsibilities and assignments and they have to be good in the passing game as well, with regards to routes. Zorn touched on this a bit at the presser. Byner was a power back and coached that philosophy in Gibbs system. Zorn's system will require much different techniques. Please don't interpret this as being insensitive, but we're going in a new direction and you need the appropriate components.

I would understand if another team was doing this to him.

But, this is the Redskins! For goodness sake he helped this team win a SuperBowl at one time.

You do not treat former vets like that.

You have to expect a new HC to want to pick his own staff. This is not a surprise.

Hello!!

Thank You.

The mistake is offering the job before the HC was settled.

The Redskins never should have offered Byner the job. That is where they screwed up. If they wanted to fire him, that's fine. It's their right. But you don't offer someone a job and then tell them they can't have it when they go to sign the contract. That's how you get a bad rep in the league and burn bridges. Will be interesting to see if Byner pursues a grievance or other legal action against the Skins. If they had an oral agreement in place then the Skins could be in breach of contract.

Nothing surprises me about Danny the Clown and his Sidekick. NOTHING.

The lowest of the low.

Sure they will. And he would be looking to that if this is true.

Stop apologizing for whatever unethical actions these guys make. I wish you would get a taste of that medicine and tell us how it feels in the future.

See my post on page 14 of the Jim Zorn As Coach thread. That should explain it all that Snyder has no clue and this organization needs qualified front office people....

Thats the respect you give a former SuperBowl winner. He played on the 91 squad and was a key contributer to the team winning the whole thing. That is the respect you give the guy?

That is like a chicago Bull fan dissing Michael Jordan.

Come on now, HAMO, little overdaramatic, aren't you? Byner WAS NOT the franchise like MJ, and comparing the two is like comparing John Riggins to Timmy Smith. Byner was integral for a few years, but let's not have him parting the ocean.....

Good point Skinsfreak. I think this is exactly what's happening.

I see the new company line is business is business…

Like RIC said hope none of you have to go thought this type of treatment but hey, if you do remember business is business

This really speaks to the bigger picture that Snyder had no intention of hiring Zorn (otherwise Zorn would have told him not to offer Byner a job) forget about the short list Zorn wasn’t even on the long list

But you see, this was a THOROUGH search. He did it conscientiously and professionally. He looked at ALL his options available ...

... since last Thursday when he first talked to Zorn about it.

Yes but not for long. They need another lesson and then they will start a thread in the Smack forum telling us how stinky their hands are. Pathetic.

Byner as a player-Great, loved the guy.....but as RB coach I mean whatever.....let Zorn get the guy from seattle to help our guys implement some west coast stuff........
Screw over Byner!!!!!! I think its more like gave earnest a chance, probably way overpaid him, now take the experience you got and move on.....

The bottom line is that its just not that big of a deal........Earnest went down to TB and interviewed so he contributed to management considering replacing him in the first place

It actually makes more sense to replace him with the new offense and West coast adjustments IMO

Dont confuse be loyal to an individual as a former player with being loyal to one as a coach in a new regime. I think those of you that are all bent out of shape about this are hanging on to your memories of earnest as a player.....I fine with him getting the AX and I attended that SuperBowl!

He interviewed with Tampa Bay because the Skins weren't willing to offer him a longterm contract. Again, it's not the decision to not retain Byner that is the problem, it's the manner in which they have gone about this. Why did they offer him a contract before picking a head coach? This is a perfect example of why people were critical of the Skins' decision to hire and retain staff members before picking a head coach.

Now, look. Stump Mitchell is no slouch, either. When Byner signed his new contract, he had to know that there was a chance it wouldn't work out, as the HC hadn't been chosen yet. While the emotional attachments are certainly there for me, I can stomach bringing in somebody more apt to ready our rb group for the new system. Why not? Why not give Zorn what he thinks he needs to succeed here? The man is already going to have his hands full getting JC acclimated to the three-step and bullet fast release...if he think Stump can manage the rb's (who will have to have great hands and be open on JC's third step when not running, as the pass sets up the run in this system), then let him choose Stump for the job.
Besides, given his popularity (and assuming there's some interest on his part), maybe Byner finds a place up front.

On a personal level, I think this is pretty screwed up. This is what we've come to expect with Dan Snyder at the helm. Remember how we kept signing and waiving Danny Weufel (sp?)

That being said, I think Byner was a very good running back but a very bad (dare I say 'terrible'?) running back coach. If you look at tape from Portis from Denver and Portis in DC, you can see huge differences in his running mechanics. He ALWAYS has a forward lean in his run which destroys his balance and forces him to trip when he accelerates forward in the open field. His patience in letting the play develop is close to nothing. In Denver it was: "wait for the hole, one cut and up the field." In DC, it was more like, "just keep going straight whether there is a whole or not"

I am not making this mechanics/run philosophy stuff up, google it; or listen to Denver/DC coach interviews.
