Not trying to be a stranger

Not trying to be a stranger lately... just started a new job as the general manager of a community-based newspaper, and have very little free time at the moment.
Job's great... now I just have to figure out if I'm going to be able to juggle all of the hats that I am expected to wear these days.
But it's the 'off-season' so hopefully I can get things settled and move on to a draft section and some Caps coverage through the spring.
Peace.

Congrat's Boss on becoming a member of the 4th estate. Just remember as a member of the media you are now part of the problem and not the solution.

Cheers.
And to clarify for you warmother... I run a 'photo-based' community paper that is all about good news in my local community. While I'm technically a member of the fourth estate, it is with the knowledge that I can do what I believe in - promoting the good things that happen in my hometown... not slinging mud. And I'm not a reporter, I'm the general manager of the paper with full autonomy... so MY directive, is the paper's directive. So I'd like to think that I'm already trying to be part of the solution and not the problem.
Just capped off my first week - it went swimmingly - and I had a lot of fun. I thought I knew everyone in this town, but I'm already seeing that by summer, I will TRULY know everyone in my community. Pretty much running 24/7 at the moment while I get situated, but I'm trying to say plugged in as much as I can.

Sigh, how I wish I worked at a place that gave good news instead of chasing the police lights. I wish my station had somebody in charge who didn't believe in "If it bleeds, it leads."
I'm glad it's going well for you but I do have one question. Did you have to cut your hair for the job?

Nope... very progressive company.
Having said that, it's all coming off... by choice.
Right now I'm helping manage the 'London North' paper as it just launched, but I'll actually be the general manager of the London South paper in all likelihood... or both.
So when we launch the South paper, I'm going to cut all of my hair off and donate it to Cancer kids. I've also started talking to corporate sponsors about 'bidding' to do the actual cutting - with all of the proceeds going to Cancer research as well.
So my days of being a long-hair are coming to an end. I'll miss it, but it's only hair - and when so much good will come of it (there will likely be a few thousand bucks kicked to Cancer as well as my hair), it's tough to look at the hair as even remotely important. I've already spoken with a few guys that seemed perfectly willing to donate $1000 for the right to cut my hair - so my goal is to get 2 or 3 people, divvy up the hair, and SNIP!!!!
I'll have a lot of contact with the mayor and members of city council, as well as prominent community businesspeople - it seems to me that it's in my best interest to not be judged by others for the length of my hair.
But the choice was mine, and certainly not mandated.
Love the gig so far - the nature of the job makes it pretty much a 24/7 job with a lot of odd hours, so it's taking some getting used to lifestyle-wise - but other than that, my comfort level, the reaction in the community, and utilizing the large network that I have - has been spectacular.

Welcome to the Dark Side. You are one of -US- now. Now I will need to introduce you to my image consultant and public relations agent.
Seriously, I was told in an intensive public speech training course that -everything- that does not reinforce your message from an image or body language perspective becomes an unwanted distraction. Wise move as a -public- person to remove any potential -distractions-.

Well done sir.

That's a great idea about the donation. I wish I had thought of it when I clipped my locks a few years ago.

Boss, 'gratz on the new gig. If you exert half the effort into your new endeavors that you do here, you final product will be twice the quality we're typically exposed to.
Prost!

Wow, what a crazy last few weeks... undoubtedly one of the busiest months of my life.
SO many loose ends to tie up taking over for someone in mid-stream...
Anyway, just another quick update to say hello. I realize that I have been pretty scarce lately and I probably will be again this month, but then hopefully everything will smooth out and I can get into a regular routine that includes maintaining THN.
The new job is wonderful - so many great events and smiling faces - and I put my first paper to print yesterday - so the weekend was a little crazy.
But it's going really well, and I'd be lying if I didn't say, 'I love it.'
Hope you're all well, and I'll be back to normal very soon... well, as normal as I personally can get.

Congrats on still loving the job after the first month. By that time, usually the cynicism has set in, but that doesn't sound like the case here. Nice of you to donate your locks to cancer research.
