Just when things started to look up and I was 90% sure we'd have a good year again next year, Gibbs goes off and retires. I mean, now with a new coach there will be questions and the Skins might struggle again even if we stay in house with our new HC. Hell, I don't even want to think about signing a coach from somewhere else...we'll be back to square one, new system, new coaching staff, another 2 years before we do well again.
It might be just me, but I'm pretty upset at Gibbs. He said before he would honor his contract, and he retires now? Just seems unfair, we finally seemed set up to have a good future and he has to go and mess it up.
Anyway, I hope things work out, but again I have a shady feeling that a repeat of the 06 season could happen next year..I pray I'm wrong though.
PLEASE CONTROL YOURSELF DAN SNYDER! DON'T MESS UP!

Gibbs left to take care of family first. . .you gotta respect that, whatever state it leaves the Redskins in. ("There's more to life. . .")

I don't HAVE to respect anything. In this case, I understand, but do not respect his decision. Gibbs stated on several different occasions that he would honor his contract. Bailing on both the contract and his word are not respect worthy, imho.
Like I said, I TOTALLY understand the decision and hope the best for him and his family. Family does come first...just don't lie to me.

If my grandson had leukemia and my family needed me, I probably wouldn't care whatpeople I didn't know on a message board thought about it.

Particularly some of those who wanted him out at one point in the first place.

No kidding. Family is 100% more important than any job could ever be.

Frankly, I hope he doesn't care. I know I wouldn't. Sorry for responding to the thread.

I don't think that that's necessarily true. Norv, Tomlin, and Wade Phillips have done as well or better than the coaches that they replaced.

I'm sure there are many here who will agree with me that Gibbs would have stayed on as he indicated IF whatever came up personally was not very important to him and also the fact that he felt that the team was headed in the right direction and could manage just fine without him - as a matter of fact I think we might be in for a pleasant surprise as to how the team will do this season
Thanks Joe Gibbs - you've put the pieces in place and now we all can enjoy the fruits of your labor.

You are welcome to respond. So am I.
Besides. Taylor was diagnosed in January, and Joe stayed on for the year even though he could have called it quits. We got a year more than I would have given.

For me Gibbs is an outstanding human being. A great leader of men.
He felt he had to leave so that is what is right for him.
As far as playcalling he is not the same guy the second time around. Gibbs has done it all already. He has already accomplished what most people in life aspire to. When you have already been there and done that you dont have the same passion. No matter who you are.

Personally, as a Skins fan, I never wanted Gibbs to leave. Ever. He is the coach all of us think of when the discussion "Best in team History" comes up.
I'm sad to see him go but he has a life outside of football, has a family that would love to see him, and feels it's necessary to be there for them and Taylor on possibly his last moments on earth. I don't blame him one bit.

With those coaches you mentioned, the team was very much established when they took over. With us, I think we are just now finding our identity. Whoever it turns out to be, I hope we continue down the path we have started.

A little insensitive I think. The man quit the 1st go around b/c of stress, and that was 15-20 years ago? Now he is dealing with his grandson's health AND had to deal with the tragedy of Sean Taylor (RIP) at 67 years old ON TOP OF being the head coach/team president of the Washington Redskins. I would venture to say that this is more stress than most of us have ever dealt with at any one point in our lives. Give the man a break. He has brought us from the pit we were in back to where we can dominate again. Hopefully, he's taught Danny a few things about owning this wonderful organization that can benefit us down the road.

Really.
Not to mention, there very well may have been an underlying "football" reason he stepped away now. Like not wanting to be a lame duck coach or wanting to give GW the chance, effectively preventing him from being snatched up by another team. We've heard that GW has garnered interest from other organizations. And if this is, in fact, the case, it's not like they will say or admit that publicly. I believe there was way more than one reason why Joe, perhaps strategically, stepped down now.

It's wrong to say he lied to you. It's only a lie if he didn't mean it when he said it, and I believe every time he said he intended to honor his contract, he meant it. However, things changed. Unlike so many lying college coaches, at least Gibbs didn't step down to chase more $$ somewhere else.

Sad to see the callousness of some of our members. Joe Gibbs has always had his priorities in order. Too bad so many of you don't.

Seems like most people are defending his decision - a good reflection on the members here.

Don't "lie" to you.... That IMO is NOT a lie. A lie is something that you intentionally tell someone to mislead them. Gibbs had every intention of fulfilling his contract but the reality of life is that NOTHING is for certain. The only guarantee we all have is that we are going to die eventually.
Not respecting a man because he is taking care of his family...
Not respecting a man for putting his family to the side for 4 years...
Not respecting a man for doing the best he could...
Those statements can't be finished because this is a PG forum.
Just like you can give your opinion on the subject at hand, we can give our opinions on any/every reply. If anyone is deserving of an absence of RESPECT, its you. I've had my issues with Gibbs, I've disagreed, I've at times felt the game was past him but I've never ever felt a lack of respect for him.
Gibbs 1.0 means squat to me. Gibbs 2.0 means everything. Even without a Lombardi trophy, I was able to what he is about as a MAN. I was able to see who he is and what he can do. He solidified himself as my favorite coach for how he handled adversity in the face of Taylors death. The guy is on his own level.

I would in no way say I don't respect him now. And I totally agree with why he left.
That don't mean it don't hurt people. I know It is upsetting to me. And in some ways I feel the same. He's leaving us high and dry. He was brought to bring us back to glory, which he has not done. He's won a playoff game and has made much improvement.
Some here have used Norv and Wade P as examples. But these are examples of ready made SB contending teams, and that is NOT what we are.
No, Im not mad at Joe, and I respect his reasons for leaving. I have two kids myself and one on the way (soon to be three boys, My mother thinks Im trying to make a football team). I would be gone also. But that don't mean that it don't upset people.
I mean we do have to go through this now, that in itself is disheartening, and frustrating, being that we have come so far just to start over.
I can see that side of it, but I don't hold it againt Gibbs for it. It is a very respectable reason to leave.

Did you ever think that Gibbs was doing us a favor??
I think he fully intended to fulfill his contract. Then there is a 2 year extension offer, (it obvious now that he didn’t want to coach past next year), making that his last year. How many free agents are going to want to sign with us if they KNOW there is going to be a coaching change next year?? By stepping down this year Gibbs give us a chance to name a new coach and be competitive in the FA market this off-season.
My two cents
