Redskins DT Cornelius Griffin may be released this offseason.
Washington has the worst salary cap issues in the league by far, and will have to shed some salary. Shawn Springs, Griffin, and Philip Daniels are among the highest paid players who are over 30.
"Many within the team" believe CB Shawn Springs and WR Brandon Lloyd won't be back with the Redskins in 2008, according to the Washington Post.
Lloyd's release is almost a given, though it may not happen until his $1.8 million roster bonus comes due July 1. Springs had a strong year, and with Carlos Rogers unlikely for training camp, it will be a surprise if he's let go.

I see us getting rid of a lot of our older Defensive players...
Springs-Daniels-Griffin all are mostly not coming back.

Awwww man.I have to say these 3 things about them.
1)Shawn Springs:Hes been our best CB for 4 years now and during the last 4 games,he has stepped up.But hes time has come and hes always injured and we have to move on.We could draft a CB or get one out of FA but Springs is taking alot of cap.
Daniels:You helped alot in 05.And in 06 helped during the Panthers-Jags game. And this year you made some plays. But big guy your 35 taking alot of cap,and is always injured. So hit the rode jack.
Griffin:You did excellent in 04-05-07 but you gotta go too.Take alot of cap.You barely get to the QB like you use too and your getting old.But your a good runs stopper so I could probably re-think what i said.
Other probables leaving?.
Pralou:LOL get him out of here
Brunell=Thankes for the 05 fantastic year but your old and have to go.
Jansen:You get injured easily ,and your getting old Im sorry.I would love to keep you but we skins gotta get younger.

If we let Griffin go then we need to somehow find a way to sign a guy like Haynesworth. Our defensive line is mediocre at best. We need to be adding impact players, not losing them. Daniels should go no question about it. But I haven't seen anything from Gollston or Montgomery that leads me to believe that they are starting caliber players. We need to keep Griffin, sign a defensive tackle, and draft or sign a pass rushing defensive end.

Canes is making some sense here. Redskins listen to Canes, please.

Montgomery and Golston out performed Griffin this year. Montgomery made numerous of plays this year and out shine Griffin. Golston had a good year especially down the stretch he got great penetration on short yardage plays that led to turnover on down twice against the New York Giants and help with a safety in Minn. I believe Montgomery is going to be a force in this league if he continues to improve like he did this year and Golston would be a very good third DT off the bench and even a starter if he improves. I believe Griffin is making to much money for the little production he has given us. Haynesworth will be to much money, lets continue to stay away from the big name players and build from the draft.

Hainesworth is dirty and undisciplined.... leave his trash out there. Griffin, while had sparks, is past his prime. Gotta let 'em go if it's financially attainable. Springs had a monster year this year, it would be silly to get rid of him unless absolutely necessary. I don't trust Carlos until he shows he's starting calibre. Smoot's a great #2 CB, but I don't want to rely him to be a #1 CB with Carlos #2. Not enough output and consistancy there. Who knows, though, maybe Carlos will come into his own this year when he gets 100%.

I would not be disappointed if #ocho was the first to be axed.

say what you want about Haynesworth but I would gladly take him on that defensive line .. not saying that we will be able to afford him or will even go after him .. as for the CB situation I could see us letting Springs move on and trying to attract one of the many young CBs that will be on the market.. only problem being the price for DB's has gone through the roof and we all know the situation of our cap( which we will get under control) somehow we do every year and I dont expect this year to be any different.. I find myself being one of the few believer in Carlos and as long as he is healthy I think he makes a very capable starting DB .. I would like to leave Smoot at the #3 spot though because while he had his moment where he played well overal I wasnt too impressed with him.. he got beat alot down the stretch and im not too comfy with him as 1 or 2

On the day that the greatest coach in past, current, and future Redskins' lore retires - spouting off about which players will be cut is weak. We just lost the Skins' version of Lombardi, Bear Bryant, and John Wooden rolled into one. Sorry, just seems meanspirited to start thinking about who loses their job today.

while its sad to see someone like Joe Gibbs go it doesnt change the fact that the team is going to make changes.. you dont think that the Redskins front office isnt discussing these things as well? cant cry about Gibbs forever.. he was a great man and great coach now its time to move on and figure out what this team needs to take the next step.. starting TODAY

Bit dramatic isn't it?

Wasn't Lombardi already the Skins' version of Lombardi, back in '69?

No, he didn't win three SB for the Skins.

I don't think the front office is thinking about that right now.
Some may be looking ahead, doing some grunt work. Looking at draft prospects and getting things together as far as our free agents go. But not doing any kind of real work towards that.
Most of them are probably wondering about their jobs.

Our defensive line is mediocre at best and you want Golston and Montgomery as the starters? We need to improve the line and starting those two doesn't accomplish that at all. We need a serious talent influx into our line. Just look at how inefective our line is at pressuring the qb. Carter is undersized so that makes our interior linemen even more important. I'll agree that Montgomery showed signs, but I disagree about Golston. He is a backup at best. Look at a team like Jacksonville. They are very physical on defense and it all starts with their dominant defensive line. Just look at how much time opposing qb's had against our line and how difficult it was for us to get pressure with our front 4.

I tend to agree with Cane. We don't have enough talent on our DL and Im unsure of how I feel about our OL as well. If our DL can't get the kind of pressure Seahawks did to us. We will not have a top ranked D. And at the same time, we have to have an answer for the pressure we saw against them as well.
We have to dish our pressure and have to be able to handle pressure as well. Thats a huge reason for the Giants success this year. They got great pressure by their D.

Exactly. The Giants have a mediocre linebacking group and secondary, but their defensive line can make up for that. Games are won and lost in the trenches and the Seattle game was a perfect example of that. We need to get younger on the offensive line and more talented on the defensive line.

Im not sure I agree with Carter being undersized though. Im not sure Id say he is undersized. I mean sure he's not 300+lbs and he looks small beside of guys like Heyer. But so does other DEs beside of Heyer. Thats why these guys are called speed rushers. Carter is not a power rusher. I think his 10 Sacks are respectable numbers. We just need more total. If we had 10 sacks from both sides, plus 5 from each of our guards. Then 12 from our LBs. then 4 or 5 from Landry. Thats 47 sacks and with Rock back we could get more from the LBs. That would be a good season.

Carter is pretty undersized. The Skins have him listed at 252 lbs. That is small for an every down defensive end. By comparison, a guys like Kerney and Jared Allen weigh over 270 pounds. Mario Willaims weighs around 290 pounds. Even a small guy like Elvis Dumervil still weighs around 260 lbs. I'm not saying that it's necessarily a problem that Andre Carter is on the smaller side for a defensive end, I just think that it makes the play of the interior line more important.

True the weight would give them more leverage. But none are in as good as shape as Carter keep himself in. I would think that would benifit his stamina. After 7mins in a 9min drive, Carter will still be as effective as he was 1min into the drive.
But, we really do need to get someone like Mario opposite of Carter.

...and Carter can out-lift every other player in the gym. He has tremendous strength that makes up for the lack of size. Carter played very well this year and Gibbs said he is the best conditioned athlete he's ever coached. I do think, however, that we need a stud DE opposite of him, and I'm sure we'll get one this year.
