HB III - Wild Card Round

The final regular season Hognostication standings are out. Congratulations to HOOKBASSGA on his runaway victory, and to Welb for his week 17 win that propelled him into the final spot in these playoffs (and sent last year's champ, Hoss, home to watch the games on TV). Just to reiterate, these playoffs are strictly for bragging rights, are not sanctioned by THN (though their help is greatly appreciated), and will not affect HOOKBASSGA's impressive season victory.
Here are the final standings:
Code: Select all
Pos Poolmeisters TW TL TT Pct. TB Avg Last Wk Change
1 HOOKBASSGA 184 56 0 76.7 10.3 1 --
2 Mursilis 166 74 0 69.2 9.9 2 --
3 Justice Hog 160 80 0 66.7 12.1 3 --
4 Texas Hog 159 81 0 66.3 12.0 4 --
5 riggins85 159 81 0 66.3 12.4 5 --
6 JSPB22 158 82 0 65.8 10.2 6 --
7 innovator83 158 82 0 65.8 13.3 7 --
8 ChrisHanburger 157 83 0 65.4 12.6 8 --
9 SkinsJock 156 84 0 65.0 10.1 11 + 2
10 Redskin in Canada 156 84 0 65.0 10.5 9 - 1
11 REDEEMEDSKIN 156 84 0 65.0 13.2 10 - 1
12 Welb 152 74 0 67.3 12.5 16 + 4
Notables:
RiC managed to squeak in above TRO.
Fios rested his starters in week 17, and played himself out of contention.
JH
Hognostitraited his way to a bye in the first round. (Who says crime doesn't pay?)
I gained two more games in my pursuit of RiC's career Hognostications title, which puts me only 7 or 8 games back, depending on if you use the adjusted or raw 2005 totals, respectively.
Anyhoo, here are the conference breakdowns:
The HHC (Hogs Hognsoticating Conference):
1 HOOKBASSGA
2 Justice Hog
3 riggins85
4 innovator83
5 SkinsJock
6 REDEEMEDSKIN
and the DHC (Dirtbags Hognsoticating Conference):
1 Mursilis
2 Texas Hog
3 JSPB22
4 ChrisHanburger
5 Redskin in Canada
6 Welb
The format works just like the NFL playoff format, with the top two seeds from each conference getting a first round bye, while #6 plays at #3 and #5 plays at #4 this week. Home field advantage is given by the lower seed picking games first. Total points for the weekend is the tie-breaker. The Hognosti-Bowl has no home team and the players' picks and point totals will be chosen by PM. (A neutral third party will be employed in case I make it to the big game.)
So without further ado, here are the games to be Hognosticatated in this Wild-Card round:
Redskins at Seahawks
Jaguars at Steelers
Giants at Buccaneers
Titans at Chargers
SkinsJock, REDEEMEDSKIN, Redskin in Canada, and Welb, please get your picks in ASAP, so the home teams have a chance to use their advantage.

My three non-home teams and one home team picks:
Washington Redskins
Jacksonville Jaguars
New York Giants
San Diego Chargers
My most risky pick is NY but I have a gut feeling about it. I cannot believe that I am picking Eli and Couglin but I am as the upset this week.
Total points pick for all four games is 152. You guys are a bit low IMHO.

yesterday I wrote down my picks so I wouldn't be influenced by yours. Figures I picked the same teams and a total score of 150
So then I was thinking of going with the Bucs, but I have the same gut feeling and refuse to change my pick just to be different. So, I guess its going to be an over/under contest.
Skins
Jags
Giants
Chargers
151 points (we could tie if I went with 150).

Who is picking the Washington Redskins to win this Saturday:
Ditka, Johnson, Smith, Mortensen, and Jackson (5 out of 5 here!)
http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/notebook? ... ountdown07
Schlereth and Mortensen (2 out of 6)
http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/features/talent?
Who is picking Seattle:
Allen, Golic, Jaworski and Wickersham
I was told that even Peter Kink is predicting a Redskins victory.
It will be a tough and close game. That is for sure. Not that Mike Sellers comments on the "piped in noise" can make the rivalry become any more heated.

It was loud the last time we were there and that was to go to the NFC Championship game - I'm sure they will be cranked up but it will still come down to the fact that they are not going to win because our guys want it more and will just do whatever it takes to get down to Dallas next week.
This Seattle team knows they are going to have a battle and in the back of their minds is the knowledge that we are playing like a team possessed

Where is Welb? Perhaps somebody should send him a PM and if there is no response we could find an alternate for him?
Maybe the other hosts should receive PMs as well. Otherwise you guys may get some no-shows.

I just PMed you the entire situation:
JSPB22 wrote:There are some issues. 3 of the contestants (HOOKBASSGA, innovator83, and Welb) are not members of the message boards, so they may not even know about the playoffs. riggins85 is also not a member, but Riggins85 is, so I'm guessing it's the same person, just a quirk of the Hognostication software. Riggins85 only has 11 posts, though, and the last was on Nov. 22. I PMed BossHog and asked him to notify the 3 by their email on the picks sheet. He has read the message, but he hasn't replied. I also PMed Riggins85, with a link to the page, but he hasn't looked at it yet. All the away picks are in, except for my opponent, Welb,

. If tomorrow rolls around, and still no picks, I will just post mine, and everyone, who's opponent doesn't play will get a win by forfeit. I hope these guys, show up.
If Welb shows up and posts picks after me, I reserve the right to adjust my picks accordingly, up until game-time, to preserve my HFA.

No, I think he took the "easy" one. You and I are the only ones facing elimination in a real Wild Card game this weekend.
Going down to the tie break.

yeah, sorry about that. Its not as fun, but I just couldn't bring myself to pick Tampa. I really don't see a Giants win as that much of an upset.

And, as the polls close, it looks like a really lopsided day, where, seemingly, 3 teams didn't bother to show up.
This RiC at ChrisHanburger contest should be a good fight deep into the 4th round.

49 + 60 = 109 points scored on Saturday
If the sum of the two scores today is 42 or lower you win. Otherwise, I will have to keep on the THN playoffs without as much interest in the outcome as I did 24 hours ago.

There's no way it'll be under 42. Good luck next week!

Thanks. The total was 170 points but the two TDs resulting by interceptions by Seattle at the end of the game should not really count.
The total should have been really around 156. Still above 152 but not by much. You still got a better score than some others who did not face any opposition this weekend though. Not a fault of them but you competed well.
On to the next round.

it matters not the quality of the teams who play - just win baby

in many instances this season and as we saw in the playoffs this weekend the winners were not in my opinion the better "team", they just had the "winning" score
I guess I am one of the beneficiaries - I understand that I will be playing that reprobate legal wanabe from the First State of Delaware and he has the home field advantage?
congratulations to the other deserving winners! oh! and also a well done to RiC
AND TRO gets HOOKBASSGA
