Mike Martz canned as OC in Detroit!

Just when you thought it couldn't get any worse for Detroit, they give the ol' heave ho to Mike Martz. That team has more problems than Barry Sanders had career yards!! Matt Millen has taken that franchise and destroyed it, piece by piece!! It's a pity, I like Millen!

The Detroit Lions fired offensive coordinator Mike Martz on Wednesday, according to several media outlets.

The Detroit News reports that the team is making "sweeping changes" in coach Rod Marinelli's staff, which includes job changes for several assistant coaches. Offensive line coach Jim Colletto is to be named offensive coordinator; Kippy Brown will be named assistant head coach and will coordinate the passing game and coach running backs; Shawn Jefferson will be the receivers coach.

Team officials would neither confirm nor deny the reports.

Not a good week for offensive geniuses :)

They'll probably seek to improve their offence by drafting another two wide receivers in 2008.

We need franchises like Detroit in the NFL, to remind us just how lucky we are to be Redskins fans.

Hey, just one more coach we can add in the offseason (after we sign Brian Billick).

I had them tied with Arizona, but now Detroit is in the toilet by themselves

I actually love laughing at what Martz does every week. He has good plays he just gets carried away sometimes.

Heck it was not his fault that Detroit threw away a playoff spot. The head coach has to step in and make adjustments.

Mike's just this year's scapegoat.

Exactly. The Lions ranked 19th in total offense with a 4,000 yard passer. Their defense ranked last in total defense in the entire league. Perhaps they should have canned a defensive coach. I'm not a fan of Martz, but the Lions defense sucks and needs far more improvement than their offense does.

That's true, however, Martz didn't do the defense any favors by continually passing the ball. He completely ignored the ground game, even when it was working. meaning that defense was always on the field...

I've heard rumblings that the Niners want to get Martz. If possible, the Niners have a worse offensive line than the Lions.

Shaun Hill/Alex Smith/Whomever is QB'ing the Niners, better strap on a flak jacket. You're gonna die....

It's just like that Super Bowl he lost for the Rams back when the Pats were still underdogs (remember those days?). The Pats D was coming out in nickel packages on most downs, and yet Martz stuck with the passing game despite the fact the defense was keying on that. He only rushed something like 14 times (with Marshall freakin' Faulk, in his prime, in the backfield!!), and passed for something like 44 plays, despite the fact the run was working (over 4 yards/play average). What a dope. Great to see he's learning.

That's a valid criticism, but Matt Millen is the real problem in Detroit.

Hard to argue with that.

I just saw on the news that SF has hired Martz as OC. He has 2 weapons in place with Gore and Davis.

My cousins in the Bay Area will be excited. That's a good signing for Nolan.

Whenever I hear the arguements about the 'Skins needing a new GM, I always remind myself of what a great Job Matt Millen has been doing in Detroit.

They've drafted so many wide recievers in the past several years, what did they expect to happen. A great passing game, but little else.

Although I think that Martz going to S.F was a step in the right direction, it maybe that he might take over as head coach after next year. As long as Nolan is the head coach they will NEVER be in the playoffs

I hope their QBs wear armor next year, because with Martz and that crappy offensive line, they're going to get the David Carr treatment.
