Some important playoff analysis....

most people think we are chasing the lions, cards, vikings.... and also rooting against the eagles and panthers. all for that last wild card. everyone is giving the giants that number 1 spot. but, if we plan on beating the giants next week, we are much better off rooting for the eagles this week to beat the giants. here's why.

if the eagles win this week.... giants 8-5, redskins 6-7, eagles 6-7.

next week, we play the giants... a game we need to win or all this talk is crap anyway... and the eagles play at dallas. i will give that to dallas.

next week record if giants lose this week and we win next week.....

giants 8-6
redskins 7-7
eagles 6-8

since the giants are favored to lose this week, and eagles would be big favorites to lose next week.... a win in our next game would not make this situation very unlikely to happen.

now we would be down to the last two games of the season. the eagles at best would be 8-8. however, if the above mentioned happens, their 8-8 would lose to us, the giants, or a three way tie. so they would be mathematically eliminated with a loss at the cowboys. no other way around it.

now we have us and the giants with two games left. again, this is with a giants loss this week and a redskins win next week. not asking for 8 million scenarios here... just two.

now, we would be 1 game back with two to go. and get this. we would hold the tiebreaker over the giants in almost any possible scenario with two games left.

giants are at buffalo and home vs. new england.

if they go 1-1....

and we win both... we would have split with the giants, but have a better division record. they would be out, and now two wild cards are up for grabs.

if they go 0-2....

and we win only 1.... vs. cowboys... we would have split with the giants and bettered them in the division.

and we win only 1.... vs. vikings.... we would have split with the giants, tied in the division, tied in common opponents, tied in conference.... so it would come down to strength of victory..... which is TBD.

so, to wrap this whole thing up.... the eagles will be not be any kind of issue for the redskins UNLESS they win in dallas... even if they 3-0 in their other games. we would still knock them out if tied.

BUT, if they can beat the giants for us, we can do some major damage to the giants playoff hopes with a win next week, and thus open up an extra playoff spot to go after... even making 8-8 a real possibility for the playoffs if the giants lose in buffalo and against the pats in their final two.

so feel very comfortable rooting for the eagles this week. we need them to win.

I'm sorry but I can't get myself to feel all "warm and fuzzy" about potential playoffs for this team. If I thought they would go far in the playoffs, I would be right there with you. The truth of the matter is this team hasn't strung together 2 consecutive victories since games #1 and #2 this year.

Now, if they somehow pull off consecutive wins this late in the year, maybe I'll get a little more excited.

Today, at this very moment, I'm sorry to say that I'm not.

I really am not sold on this playoff talk. Even if we did make it to the playoffs, we would be knocked out in the first round. With the injuries and set backs this team has had this year, we dont have the personnel to make a push in the playoffs. I would rather focus on getting good draft picks and save the playoff talk for another year.

okay, if you weren't sold on all the "playoff talk", then don't open a thread called, "playoff analysis"! this thread was made for those who are still on board until mathematically eliminated and want to know who to root for in other NFL games that would benefit the redskins. for instance, at first glance would be to root for the giants to knock off the eagles because we are still 2 games behind the giants, but tied with the eagles. however, this is not true...as stated above. also, you won't know if they win a few in a row until they DO win a few in a row. so, while you are waiting to see if it is safe to jump on the bandwagon, please feel free to root for the eagles over the giants. because i have shown that if the redskins win a few games and you are back on board, it would have been in the best interests of the skins to have the eagles win.

I'm appalled...."i'd rather not worry about playoffs, we'll lose first game anyway, lets get draft picks..."

that's insane?? The goal is to make playoffs and win super bowls, not throw towels in when there's still a chance, regardless, whether 12-0 or 0-12 you fight to win games...they're paid to do that for their fans who are the employer. Owners need fans to cut paychecks.

Losing is contagious (obviously), we need momentum down stretch to build for next year, just like '05...hahahh (yea, I know, didn't get us much for 06)

That's just a ridiculous statement. Even with our many injuries, we were in our games against the Pies, Packers, Bucs, and G-strings (the other NFC playoff teams) until the very end. We will have Randy Thomas back at full strength by playoff time, and have no reason to believe that we can't beat these other teams with a 4/5ths healthy line. I say if we can make it to the post-season, we can go far.

If the Redskins win out, the help we need:

1: Detroit must lose once
2: Arizona must lose once
3: Carolina must lose once
4: New Orleans must lose once OR finish with a worse strength of victory

If we win out, the Eagles can't catch us. We would end up with the same division record, but we'd have the better record against common opponents, thanks to our victory over the Bears.

We may not need all of that if the G-strings collapse like they have done in previous years. We could actually finish 2nd in the division.

I'm just going to root for us to win. When you're busy figuring out the permutations and combinations you're in trouble anyway. I also hate rooting for teams I don't like. If we win out we'll get in.

That's partially right. If the Giants collapse but the Lions and Cardinals win out, we would still miss the playoffs. Here's the updated version:

If the Redskins win out, four of these five things must happen:

1: Detroit must lose once
2: Arizona must lose once
3: Carolina must lose once
4: New Orleans must lose once OR finish with a worse strength of victory
5: New York loses to both PHI and WASH, and once against either BUF and NE

I can't follow this really. I'm just glad that we're still playing meaningful games this late in December. Too many recent years where we've been out of it by mid-November.

On a side note, I love being a Skins fan and calling the Cowboys the Cowpies and the Giants the G-Strings. Very funny and gratifying at the same time. Now if they only played like that all the time....

I'm sure this is the primary conversation topic in the Redskins meeting room. What everyone else is doing, or what everyone else needs to do, or what the Redskins need everyone else to do.

If the Redskins don't handle their own business for the next three games then what any other team does will not matter.

The important ONLY important playoff analysis as of today is winning the upcoming game against the Giants. Wait. That's not playoff analysis. That's reality.

My 2 cents

Yeah, it'd be better to be ignorant about the whole thing.

This is a message board, dude.

This is a message board?

Fans have the luxury of speculating on possible playoff scenarios and the ramifications of each game to their team, in our case the Washington Redskins. Because, at this point, it is speculation as to how things could or might play out.

There was no implication on my part that 'ignorance' was better than information from a fan perspective. The implication was that from a team perspective the only concern had better be the upcoming game, and not what anyone else is doing.

If my post somehow manages to offend anyone's precious sensibilities, and all outward appearances indicate the affirmative, ignorance is a blissful option. That is to say, ignorance of my post(s) will not offend anyone's sensibilities.

My 2 cents

I'm pretty sure that's what the team is doing—after all, they are the professionals. Most posts that point out that the team shouldn't be thinking beyond 'this week' seem to imply that the fans are making an error.

"Precious sensibilities?" I've got a few when it comes to other things, but not Redskins football. ;)

Still, this is a thread about playoff possibilities. No reason to rain on the parade here. Here's your My 2 cents back.

If you're searching for clarity in any of my posts, good luck finding it. I lost both my cognitive reasoning and my sensibilities about four children ago. Back on topic, it would be nice if we didn't have to even have this discussion about what teams can help out the Redskins. From a luck perspective alone, this has been one rough season. If so much as one of those close games had gone the Skins way ...

After this week's games, we could very well be in control of our own destiny. Win and we're in.

While I understand a lot of fans' interest in the chances of being in the playoffs or not, I can honestly say that I really just want the Redskins to play these last 3 games well. Hopefully that means we will win each game and if that also means we are in the playoffs then that is great but I just want to see this team get better and play better than we have done this season. We have lost a bunch of games (5 or 6) we could have won but we won a few games we could have lost too.

I was expecting more from the team this year and while we have had a lot of injuries and a lot of bad luck we just seem to be improving a little where I thought we would be a lot better this year. I know that as a fan I am a little biased but it is still frustrating. I would be saying this if we were 10-3 instead of 6-7 - my point is I thought we would be a better team this year than we are - wins and losses are not truly indicative of how good (or bad) we are as a team.

I really do want to win these next 3 games and make the playoffs BUT personally I will also be looking for things to build on for next year

Despite all I just said - I really just want to beat the Giants and would love for the Redskins to win and play really badly because that is what has happened in a lot of Redskins/Giants games this past decade.

this is utterly ridiculous. i started this post to help those of us who not only enjoy REDSKINS football but FOOTBALL in general. i, like many of you, will be sitting here today watching football. some of you may have a rooting interest because of fantasy football, or some may bet the games. some games have no meaning to you whatsoever. however, all things being equal, i will root against the teams that would hurt any redskins playoff chances, as remote as they are. however, i had seen posts on here that indicated to those in my position (of rooting against redskin playoff rivals), that we should root for the giants. however, i found that incorrect and simply wanted to clarify the playoff ramifications for this particular game. if you bet on the giants, root for the giants, if you have eli on your fantasy team, root for the giants. if your reason for selecting a side to root for in this game is the redskins.... then root for the eagles. that is all i was trying to do... help out those who didn't know the playoff analysis for themselves to better help them choose who to root for... and not to start a debate of the redskins chances of making the playoffs. if i wanted that, this thread would be called, "are the redskins making the playoffs?"
