16 Point Underdogs?!?!?!?

I just checked the NFL lines and saw that the Skins were 16-point dogs to the Pats this weekend.
Are we really in that bad of shape?
Here I am thinking this team may actually be able to compete with the Pats if we can somehow put an OL together.
16 points? That's a little much, don'tcha think?

What was the line on the New England / Miami game last week?

Big IF there, unfortunately. Anyone know Rabach's status? Will he be back?

They can score consistently, we can't - pretty much sums it up.

They've beaten everyone by at least 17, so taking the Skins means you think they will play the closest game against NE yet, which I think they will, but I'm superstitious about betting on the Skins...

We can all hope/wish and believe...
I have 1 question for you. How many points did our offense score last week by driving the length of the field? Once you answer that, repeat it to yourself and you'll have the answer to your question.

Betting lines have nothing to do with what the oddsmakers think will happen in the game. They set those at a point where they can get half the people to bet for one team and half to bet on the other. Everybody is so in love with the Pats now, it's hard for the oddsmakers to get people to bet against them. So they have to bump up the points...

Other places are giving 17 and 17.5 points.
Some might argue that it is too much because the Pats have not played against a defense as good as ours. But others would counter-argue that they have not played an offense as questionable as ours either.
So, 16 points sounds about right to me (for a handicap). But IF I was to put any money on this game (I never ever gamble on anything), I would take the 16 points and the Skins any second.

I hope the spread jumps another 3-4 points

Thats exactly what everyone was saying when we were going to play the Lions also, and what they said when we played the Pats two years ago.

Only 16? I'd have thought it would be more like 31.

I put the last of my 2007 season money on the Skins Plus 17 at Bodog.
I don't care anymore - I just want the game to be close and worth watching.

They've beaten every opponent by at least 17. If anything, a sixteen point spread is generous.

I would die if we won but really I don't think we stand a chance. Now if we were 100% healthy on our O line, I may feel different but our running game stinks and our passing game is even worse. So we are hoping that our defense/special teams scores for us. I don't bank on that.

this is true, but the moneyline is the bet that is made regardless of spread. and right now it stands at about 14-1. las vegas is willing to put there money where there mouth is that we won't win this but once every 14 tries.

16 points is gracious I think. Place your bets gentlemen, we're about to be RICH.
seriously, there is no indication that our Offense can keep up with theirs, our only hope is the defense holding them to under 24 pts.... I think 24 is the magic number.

The line is a direct reflection of the hype around the Patsies right now. If we were hyped like the Cowpies are, the line would be in the single digits.

Gotta remember that when setting a line, the linesmakers analyze the betting public much more than they analyze the strengths and weaknesses of the competing teams.
It ain't a score predictor. Just that many people will buy into the Patriots hype and believe 16 is an appopriate number.

I agree but only up to a point. The handicap is intended to reflect the predicted outcome because you want to have even bets on both sides of the game. The House should not pay one side at its own expense.
If the initial line is over-valued, it will move and adjust itself to the "reality" of the number of bets and their cost on the ground -every- day up to Sunday.

agreed RiC - BUT, in your opinion, don't you agree that this betting line is more based on perception or reality - do you really think that there is a better chance that we will lose by under 16 points or over 16 points? - that is the question
I personally think we will lose BUT I have a stupid feeling that the Pats may be looking ahead a little and while their talent is considerable, they may just win this game by 10-14 OR even lose it

We will win outright. We should be giving 16 points handicap to that team in Mass.
