Gibbs believes that Moss will play....

Despite reports Santana Moss (groin) could be out several weeks, coach Joe Gibbs says he doesn't "anticipate" being without the wideout in Week 5.
Moss, who missed practice Monday, says he hopes to play against Detroit, but doesn't know for sure. Keep track of his practice load this week before using him. Indications are so far that Moss is less than 50-50 to suit up.

This is the only positive news that I have heard about Moss. If Gibbs does think he's gonna be fine, why sign Caldwell?

We signed Caldwell before Moss hurt his groin. We signed Caldwell to be our #2 or #3 whatever. Lloyd isn't going to be the guy, so it seems so the brought in McKardell to take the place of Moss. He will probably be out this week. They don't mess with Moss that much. He is prone to injury b/c he plays so hard so when he's hurt, they sit him.

I'm with frank on this one. We can't afford to push Moss and lose him for the season like we did with Springs last year. Let those 2/3/4 stringers earn their paychecks for once!!!! I have a lot of faith in Thrash when his number's called and I think ARE will step up. This is also a time, more so than any this season, that we need Cooley to be an integral part of the game plan. If if ARE and Cooley don't step up like we know they can, then it's going to be a long year.

Reports this morning have both Caldwell & McCardell ready for "limited" action on sunday. It's a long season and the roughest stretch is ahead of us, if Moss & Portis are not ready, then hold them out, it's only game 5.
Both Cincinnati & New England had their number 1 featured backs out, the NFL is about survival and how you handle your injuries..

We have one hell of a #2 RB. It was mentioned in another post here that Betts hasn't put up the same numbers as he did last year. Well he hasn't had anywhere the same number of carries as last year. As for Caldwell and McCardell possibly seeing some action, I say what ever it takes. Keep in mind that Saunders said that if a player can count from 1-10, he can learn this offense. Maybe these two guys are, as Gibbs would say, "SUPER SMART."

wel they better be super smart if they are to deal with als number system. other wise those guys are gonna be running hooks when they were supposed to be running slants and trying to block for a screen when they are supposed to be doing a post

You'd really feel ok about sitting Moss for THRASH? hah. I admire your faith in the team and all, but...

Well, since Thrash has never done anything but learn his assignments and perform to the best of his ability, busting his chops for the sake of the team, I'm fairly confident that he can run down the field in the right direction. And he might actually be a better catcher of the ball than Santana is. Not saying that he's a better player, but I have no problem with Thrash being in there on Sunday.

I heard on 980 sports the McCardell AND Gibbs said he probably will play. Gibbs said he already knows most of the play book and is in really good shape. Also, Bram was saying that he looked really good running routes today. If the guy is ready to go , lets get him in and see what he can do.

You're comparing someone who has averaged roughly 13 catches a year over his career as a Redskin, on a team that's desperately been looking for a decent #2, to our ProBowl WR?

Oh come on now. I like Thrash as much as the next person, but James is a pretty mediocre wideout. He's got good vertical speed, but virtually no lateral quickness. That's not a particularly good recipe for a wideout.

Well no, I don't think I was making that comparison, and actually went out of my way not to. But, there are some balls that Moss has dropped this year that I don't think Thrash would have dropped. Whether he would have been in position to make the catch in the first place is a different argument.

And if they only ask him to run vertically (is that like levitating?), then his vertical speed might just be a strength. James Thrash would not be the worst wideout to have started for Washington in the last 15 years, IMO.

Actually, Thrash is a serviceable reciever. Nothing flashy with this guy, he runs his routs and catches balls thrown his way.

A couple of the long balls that 'Tana caught was because of his speed, they were over-thrown and he had to pop nitrous for speed and dive forward to get to the spot. If it hit him on stride it would've been a TD, Jason's still not as accurate as we would like, but he is improving.

He started the Philly Game and has been a starter 5 times (twice against Philly) since returning to the team in 2004.

I'll correct myself: James Thrash is not the worst wideout to have started for Washington in the last 15 years, IMO

Notes: RB Clinton Portis was limited in practice Wednesday with a mildly sprained and bruised knee. Coach Joe Gibbs said he misspoke Monday when he said Portis was having a recurrence of the tendinitis that sidelined him for most of training camp. "I think Clinton will be fine," Gibbs said. ... Of greater concern is WR Santana Moss, who remains unable to practice because of a groin injury. Asked about his chances for Sunday, Moss said: "You won't know until I know." ... WR Brandon Lloyd got kicked in the shin during practice. X-rays showed nothing of concern. ... S Taylor was limited with a bruised knee.

Considering some of our starting wideouts, I certainly wouldn't argue that assertion....

But imho the drop off from Moss to Thrash is HUGE.

It is. We are going to need a playmaker to emerge on Sunday.

I'm just wondering if Gibbs will remain somewhat conservative this weekend. One way to contain a high-powered offense and passing attack is to keep them off the field. That could mean a game plan or strategy of lots of runs to sustain long drives by the Skins.

[... WR Brandon Lloyd got kicked in the shin during practice. X-rays showed nothing of concern. ... [/quote]

Could this be why Lloyd didn't get reps after practice like the others? Or did this happen after that?

[sarcasm]It couldn't be. He kicked himself in the shin to try to bring the team down to it's knees.[/sarcasm]

Ill be disgusted if Lloyd doesn't get massive playing time this week.

I still don't see the big support for Lloyd. Where is everyone getting the idea that he will perform? I have seen nothing to have faith in him about. I'm trying to be objective, but I just can't see it.

IF Lloyd gets a considerable amount of passes thrown his way over the course of 3 games and fails to make decent impact than I'll concede that maybe he's not a good fit.

Decent players come here and rot, they leave and succeed. It's not them, its us.

Walt Harris is a prime example. You can't keep blaming the players. Walt Harris failed because we DIDN'T/DON'T HAVE A PASS RUSH. He leaves WASH, goes to a team with a rush and makes the probowl!! SHOCK, AWE!!! It's amazing how a complete defensive unit will aid a player.

The same will happen here. Lloyd will leave, go to a team with some consistency for dirt cheap and put up numbers. A team that actually throws to more than 2 WR's....
