Terrible play call

OK- I don't profess to know nearly as much about football as Gibbs/Saunders and crew but the final 4th down call was just terrible.

The game was on the line on that one play. There is one play, and only one play you run in that situation: QB Roll out to the wide side. Especially if you have a QB who can run.

If he can, the QB runs it in himself.
If he can't run it in he passes.

That last play was just a snap shot of the entire second half. It ALL sucked

I agree the playcalling was the reason we lost, but it wasn't just that last series - the whole second half was botched. The Giants D is weak, but not in their D-line - so where do we attack them? In their D line! They're starting a rookie in the secondary, and we're not attacking that more? It boggles the mind?

And why did we waste a down spiking it?!?!? There were :58 seconds on the clock!!!

We had 4 gos from the one. We spike the ball. Throw a poor pass that was short of the goal line anyway. We then use Betts twice. The first almost scored the 2nd we rushed. There was 20 seconds left on the clock, there was no rush.

I like the rollout pass it stretches them out and eliminated half their pass rush. Campbell is a big boy and can run if need be.

That 2nd half was abject surrender bottom line is the Giants were 7 points better than us tonight.

They were desperate and it showed. the numer of times we had them in 3rd and long and they converted. Must have been 8 out of 10, terrible. First half they couldn't convert 3rd and 1.

Bugger!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I love coach Gibbs, but the second half has his finger prints all over it. I just hope he lets Saunders just call 90 percent of the plays. I just hope we at least have a four touchdown lead before going to a clock draining strategy.

Playcalling was just to predictable in the second half. I just really hope this lesson hits home and our coaches make the proper adjustments.

The play calling the entire game was a joke. Far too conservative against a team with a terrible secondary. The Giants came in with statistically the worst secondary in the NFL and we don't throw the ball down field. Gibbs' conservative style is killing us.

Exactly. Our 2nd half play was called terribly. On all sides except special teams.

True. Sooo frustrating.

You know, I was cautiously optimistic they had really turned over a new leaf. One step forward, one step back.

I thought this stuff only happened in movies... I just passed through a dimensional rift, and Washington turned to Philadelphia!

Redskins fans are whining like they bleed green and white, and McNabb has a perfect qb rating in a game.

I'm scared... I want to go home....

Yes, yes, yes!!!

Instead of spiking that ball on first down, call a quick QB sneak and then run Portis (second down), then pass to Sellers (third down), and then run Portis again (on fourth down). There was plenty of time on the clock....

I had to watch the game piece by piece at work, but I stood and watched the last minute or so. Frankly, I'm ashamed. The Redkins broke my heart today with this game. To go into the half with 17 points and only one TD scored on you in 2 1/2 games, only to get shut out and LOSE THE GAME in the 2nd half to an 0-2 team is inexcuseable!

The fact that they needed to spike the ball (and waste a shot) that close to the end zone with that much time remaining says one thing:

They didn't have a game plan for the goal line. So what are we paying this elite group of coaching masterminds for? To not only lose the game in the second half, but not even use our star running back when the game was on the line? And what did they do with the extra time the spike gave them? Run the same running play twice!

Pathetic. I was going to try to get Sundays off to watch what games I could, but not if this is the crap they're going to drag out onto the field.

Hooligan , I totally agree with you. After the immediate disappointment of the loss I couldn`t help but believe we didn`t have a scripted series of plays to get in the endzone from 2 yards. Heartbreaking - that used to be our signature play - nobody could stop us in that situation in our pomp. I think the desperation of the situation got to everyone but what is Saunders paid such big bucks for if not to guarantee scoring from 2 yards with Portis , Betts and Sellars available to him. Equally what is Williams paid mega bucks for if not to guarantee stopping the Giants at least once out of 5 3rd down conversion attemts by the Giants in critical game situations. We are not getting value for money - I`m not even sure who called the last 4 offensive plays - was it Joe or AL ? I think we`ve taken ourselves down a blind ally with these highly paid co-ordinators - its not working. For me Joe Gibbs makes the offensive calls , Al Saunders and Gregg Williams can look for over inflated salaries elsewhere. Let get back to some basic, effective , winning football.

Well I’m not ready to criticize Gibbs for the second half yet?? I’m more frustrated with his clock management issues then the play calling in the second half. I also need more information before I just arbitrarily start saying stupid stuff like I heard Skins fans saying at the game last night.

Gibbs had a 14 point lead with a D that had been playing well and wanted to pound it down the Giants throat in the second half, is this news??? My problem is we need to recognize sooner that we needed to abandon that philosophy. Even after all that we were in place to tie and possibly win the game in OT. Let’s look at the last four plays…

1st Down…I need to know a few things…who has play calling responsibilities during the hurry-up? Does the coach stay connected to the QB during hurry-up? I know that when a team huddles, the connection stays on until 10 seconds are left on the play clock. So if Jason called the spike I really don’t have a problem, if he was connected and the coaches call it…I’d had rather seen us run a play there. We had plenty of time; they wanted to get the jumbo package it, so why not run the passing play on first down? If you get great if not the clock is stopped and you have time to get the jumbo package in.

2nd Down…This may be where we lost the game. We bring in our jumbo package (notice Portis is not a part of it) and we are in a rush, because has we have painfully had to learn over the pass few game the play clock is reset to :25 seconds, not :40 so the Skins having gotten two delay penalties after a spiked ball were well aware this time. Again I don’t have a problem with the play call...everyone is crying that Sellers wasn’t in the end zone and wouldn’t have scored. WHAT? Aren’t you the same people who say give it to Sellers on the one nobody ever stops him on the first hit? Do we really believe Sellers would have been stopped there?? I did wonder to myself if we have a QB Draw play put in for Jason yet???

3rd Down…This is a play Portis walks in on…watch the play again. Sellers goes outside and destroys his man, Betts sees something and cuts it back…the corner was wide open. Where was Portis??

4th Down…Skins have plenty of time to call a play and what do they do?? They do what most pop-warner teams do and they tell them to run it again, but this time tell Ladell to go outside. Ladell follows his directions and gets run down from the backside...game over. Again where is Portis?? Last night he looked like a guy who missed pre-season.

Joe please read this book…it may be the only book ever written on the subject and this is an area we are struggling in!!

the last 4 plays were an outright debacle....Tom Boswell noted in his article that that the play clock was one second ahead of the game clock and we rushed and snapped the ball WITH 25 SECONDS LEFT!...thats absurd!!!....

The spike is on first is disgraceful...
first down is ok with play action...Jason takes to too long to turnaround and get in passing formation on those plays if you notice....Sellers was open right out of the shoot but Jason was hair slow and the linebacker recovered nicely and Campbell was forced to hurry his throw due to Sellers losing seperation. and on 4th WHY RUSH TO THE LINE!!!

if you combine the end of the first half in philly with this last drive some VERY ALARMING trends are starting to emerge about 2:00 minute offnse ...uh we suck at it.....and for Gibbs's second tenure its been that way along!...

I hope over the next two weeks they do some work on the 2-minute drill and this type of under the gun scenario. Should have done much better in the last two minutes. The team showed they could do it. I don't think the coaches helped them at the end.

I believe like most that it wasn't in the last two minutes that the game was lost. It was at the start of the 2nd quarter. If we had attacked like we did in the last two minutes the entire second half we wouldn't have been in a situation to have to run a hurry up. But because we played conservatively AGAIN and leve our great defense on the feild almost the entire second half.

Exactly how I felt last night after the game, I had to chase guests home and fix up my mess in the basement. It seemed to me that everyone was thinking about the bye after the half. How many more games are we going to be subjected to this? A few more I think. But hey, it's growing pains, we cannot learn from anything without experiencing it, sadly on this team, it's experiencing it 4 to 5 times before we learn. But I still hope that we can get it turned around. There's no quitting now, hell we're just getting warmed up, we can lose game in more devastating ways, and win in more hostile and convincing fashion, we got to take the BAD with the GOOD. Even if the split is 20% GOOD and 80% Bad. It makes the 20% more flavorful when we celebrate. That being said, I have to pick up flowers tonight and take my old lady out somewhere special coz I my couch is not that comfy. GO SKINS
