Sean Taylor punt return!?

Did anyone notice on Monday that we had some kind of trick play set up on a punt return? Unfortunately, Randle El had to fair catch the ball but Sean Taylor was standing about ten yards BEHIND him when he did and it looked like the Redskins were setting up some kind of reverse or something. It was pretty obvious Taylor was either meant to return the ball or be a decoy because he was not in position to block for Randel El, he was playing way too deep. Too bad we never got to see what was being set up, I hope we try this again later in the season.

I didn't see that play. But I did notice that Clinton Portis looked like he was going to throw a half back option pass, but decided to run and gained like 7 yards on the play.

Skinna Mob, I saw both plays. CP knew if he threw into coverage, Joe Gibbs would never let him pass it again. As for the Special Teams play, I can't imagine ST running back a kick. They could have him back there as an assasin blocker. It does seem that one guy always manages to get through and get close to Randel El, so I think ST would be there to take him out. The funny thing about it being Taylor is that he is known for taking out his own players.

I can't speak for anyone else but I'm not thrilled at the idea of having one of our best defensive players in for gadget plays on special teams. More players get injured on special teams than I care to remember or count.

Just a side note. It has been confirmed that he does smile now.

Gibbs is not above tossing in a gimmick on special teams, and, if your going to throw a 30 yard lateral, you'd want a former QB doing the toss...

Gibbs used Darrell Green on punt returns when he really wanted something to happen. He'd sometimes set him up as the lone returner... as below, but he'd also pair him with another returner. This would usually result in a punt in the direction of the other return guy (the first time I saw it I think the returner was Mike Nelms... talk about "pick your poison"), to keep the ball from DG, but as often as not, the caught ball would be sent on a lateral across the field... oops... all the pursuit had followed the ball... oops... the NFL's fastest man is screaming down the far sideline... oops... the zebras are calling an illegal forward pass...

oh well, it sure was pretty...

anyway, enjoy this "signature" (you happy, Peter King?) return by one of the greatest players ever...

I just dont want Taylor getting hurt on some unecessary play. Randle El is good enough to do punt returns. Heck we are even risking Randle El.

Ummm... it's football... you are aware that he's on the field for these plays anyway, aren't you? You do realize that he is throwing blocks and making tackles on teams as it is, don't you?

If thats the case. Lets put all our starters in on special teams as well.

There are several starters on teams, including Landry, and at times, Taylor. MacIntosh has been out there as well. Gibbs understands the importance of special teams, and will ask some of his best players to be involved... always has. If he didn't, plays like the above game breaking return by DG would not have happened.

Sorry, Hammo... I just don't get it.

Meast got some work in, he demolished a safety on one of them returns. Then sellers not to be outdone, ran over another safety (Or was it the other way around)

On the play where Thrash fumbled the ball forward to the 3 yard line (and Rock recovered) Sean Taylor absolutely laid out one of the pursuers. A beautiful hit that left the Lion on the field long after the play. Special teams is a big part of the game and we should have our best players on the field. Or maybe you think all the starters should stay on the bench for fear that they might be injured during the game.

Them two would most likely injure someone else on a block before they get injured.
