Practice Squad

Working to get a few more things confirmed, but here are 5 guys they have signed for the 8 man practice squad.

DE Alex Buzbee (Georgetown kid showed well)
CR Byron Westbrook (local kid was an immediate hit but has a ways to go)
LB Anthony Trucks (he worked his butt off in camp and glad to see him rewarded)
LB Matt Sinclair (he and Chris Wilson often last two guys off the field adn out of the building on defense)
CB John Eubanks (went neck and neck with torrence for 5th CB spot)

That's a pretty good haul for the defnese and seems like they were able to keep most of what they wanted.
I would think Bell the FB and Jordan Plamer (QB) would be there as well unless someone else signed them. Maybe Lefotu, too.

Skins also looking around at WRs and other options for the roster

Players eligible for the practice squad are those who have been active for nine or fewer regular season games. A player may serve up to a maximum of three seasons on a team's practice squad.

Those that it appears they will add certainly have an opportunity to develop their game and improve if we need to call on them.

I think JLC is mostly on with that list. When you look at the guys we released on defense this year, it makes me wonder if we'll see a youth explosion in the next 1-2 years there.

Rest of the Practice Squad
Kili Lefotu (OL), Brian Bell (FB) and Burl Toler (WR) round out the squad.

Turns out none of the QBs the Skins ran through here even end up on the practice squad.

Redskins Name Eight to Practice Squad
By Gary Fitzgerald
Redskins.com
September 2, 2007

The Redskins announced their 8-player practice squad on Sunday. The group is comprised of young players who saw extensive action during preseason.

PRACTICE SQUAD (as of Sept. 2)
Player, Pos. Experience College
Brian Bell, FB R Kent St.
Alex Buzbee, DE R Georgetown
John Eubanks, CB 1 Southern. Miss.
Kili Lefotu, OL 1 Arizona
Matt Sinclair, LB 1 Illinois
Burl Toler, WR 1 California
Anthony Trucks, LB 1 Oregon
Byron Westbrook, CB R Salisbury

Two notable names absent from the list are 2007 draft picks Jordan Palmer, a sixth-round QB out of UTEP, and Dallas Sartz, a fifth-round linebacker out of USC.

Even though Bell is on the practice squad, he essentially serves as a backup to Mike Sellers. The Redskins opted to keep just one fullback--Sellers--on the final roster. Bell, a rookie, was active intraining camp, impressing as a pass-catcher. He caught one pass for nine yards in preseason play.

Buzbee is a Georgetown product who was steady through preseason. He recorded eight tackles in four preseason games.

Eubanks is a first-year player who saw action in the Redskins' 2006 season finale. In preseason, he logged three tackles, but he was narrowly beaten out for the Redskins' fifth cornerback job by Leigh Torrence. Eubanks can also return kickoffs.

Lefotu was the Redskins' 2006 seventh-round draft pick. He was released by the club a year ago, but he re-signed in January 2007 and showed progression as a starting right guard in NFL Europa last spring.

Sinclair and Toler also played in NFL Europa last spring; both signed with the Redskins on June 27, 2007.

Sinclair recorded 14 tackles in preseason play--tied for third on the team--and he esssentially beat out Sartz as a reserve outside linebacker. He is a first-year player who has had NFL stints with Baltimore and Miami.

Toler caught three passes for 26 yards in preseason for the Redskins. He spent time with the Oakland Raiders in 2006, but was released.

Trucks was a solid performer through preseason. In the second preseason game, he leveled a hit on Ravens QB Kyle Boler that forced an interception and a touchdown. A first-year player who spent time on the Redskins' practice squad last year, Trucks was fifth on the team in preseason tackles with 12.

Westbrook, the brother of Philadelphia Eagles running back Brian Westbrook, is also a local product. He grew up in Washington, D.C., and played his college ball at Salisbury University. Coaches like his potential; he recorded four tackles and forced a fumble in preseason.

I just saw on Redskins.com that Palmer and Sartz did not make the PS.

How much do they get paid to be on the practice squad?

Anyone have a line on Justin Hickman? He certainly had the stats coming out of UCLA. I has hoping he would show something as a pass-rushing DE, but didn't even make the practivce squad. Wondering if the knee(?) injury he had during OTA's held him back?

$4700 a week is the minimum but they can be paid more. Most teams go with the league Min.

Where's Hoag? He made plays and during the 2 minute drive against PBurge he was lining up all of the other WRs. He really impressed me! I guess he just didn't impress the coaches.

That's one of the moves I'm confused about. Sign Bodiford over him? Hoag's not even on the practice squad.

I'm only satisfied with with keeping Buzbee, Eubanks, and Trucks on the practice squad. The rest somewhat baffle me.

Lefotu, Westbrook, Sinclair, Bell and Toler have shown nothing to me in the preseason.

Bell did not look good at all in any of the games, especially the Jacksonville game. He missed an easy catch right in his hands and got blown up on blocking assignments.

Westbrook has been underwhelming in my view. He had one good play and that was the fumble recovery. He was in the right place at the right time. He couldn't hold onto the ball on punt returns during drills at the scrimmage against the Ravens and got schooled trying to tackle Reggie Williams, I believe, against the Jags.

Im happy with the squad. Kind of confused why we can't find a hidden jem at WR like most teams.

I think we had high hopes for Mike Espy as the 5th WR but the injury has set him back, and the team scrambling to fill the void.

I think his age was the biggest factor. He has spent 3 seasons on the practice squad of different teams, including one with us. After this year he wouldn't be eligible for our practice squad anymore and he'd be 28. . .at the end of the day our FO probably just went for youth and potential over Hoag's pre-season performance.

(Edit: Hoag may have been eligible for 1 more practice squad season after this year, depending on how the practice squad rules are to be interpreted. If the rules are that you can't be on the PS for more than 3 seasons with any team, then he wasn't eligible even this year. If the rule is that you can't be on the PS for more than 3 seasons with the same team, then he would have one more year of eligibility left.)

:hmm:

Hoag has had trial periods with the Raiders, the Giants, and the Vikings. . .all of whom let him go. He's shown some capabilities but at the end of the day he's a 27 year old WR who didn't have quite enough talent to make it in the NFL. We've got some younger prospects that are worth more of a look.

At least, I assumed you were referencing Hoag, because there sure as hell haven't been many other potential "hiddem gems" at WR on our roster recently. . . :?
