The Redskins and tight end Chris Cooley have agreed to a multi-year contract extension, the team announced on Saturday.
Cooley was entering the final year of his rookie contract. He would have been an unrestricted free agent following the 2007 season.

The team does not typically announce terms of contract extensions, but it is likely a long-term deal.

In three seasons with the Redskins, Cooley has emerged as a productive tight end and one of the more popular players among fans and teammates.

He was drafted by the Redskins in the third round (81st overall) of the 2004 NFL Draft.

In his career, Cooley has caught 165 career passes for 1,822 yards and 19 touchdowns.

Last season, he caught a team-high 57 passes for 734 yards and six touchdowns. He earned Pro Bowl alternate status.

His best season was 2005, when he caught 71 passes for 77 yards and seven touchdowns.

Redskins signed Chris Cooley to a 6-year contract extension.

Cooley is just 25, and the contract should lock him up through his prime. He should continue to improve with Jason Campbell under center. Financial terms of the deal are currently unknown.

Godd move. Cooley has been a productive draft pick and it seems that the team has taken another step in the direction that fans want them to go, building through the draft. :D :D :D :D :D

We should have waited, he still had a year left on his rookie deal. There was no rush to get this done.

We never have a thread that doesn't have at least one negative post in it. So there it is

There is nothing negative about the Skins actuallt re-signing one of it's own draft picks BEFORE they hit the open market, but I didn't want to screw with tradition

 :?  :?

Jason LaCanfora is reporting that Dan Snyder stepped in this week and made a push to get this done. Let's give some credit to the front office, who we generally blast unmercilessly, for addressing this before the season.

The Kendall acquisitin (which I liked) notwithstanding, I wish they would have done the same thing for Dockery last year.

The Washington Redskins signed tight end Chris Cooleyto a six-year, $30 million contract extension Saturday, locking up one of the team's strongest and most reliable offensive weapons.

The contract includes $14 million in guaranteed money for the player whose colorful outfits and antics have earned him the nickname "Captain Chaos."

This is really good news! Listening to Chris speak about it in his own words shows his excitement to be a Redskin for several years to come.

thank god we got this out of the way. now he can just focus on playing. cuz no matter what he says, if he didnt get this done, he would have been thinking about it all season. and that would not be a good thing man

Note how he talked about wanting to get it done so he could play here his whole career as opposed to getting it done so he could get paid.

The best part of the interview was when Cooley said, "I was glad that they wanted to do it with me." lol

Great news. I was a little worried that something wouldn't get done, as sometimes the FO values other teams FA's more than their own.

Depending on who leads the next regime after Gibbs, Cooley could be a lifer

Great news. So glad they got this done now, instead of worrying about it during the season.
