'SKINS SHUFFLE LINEBACKERS
Adam Schefter of NFL Network reports that the Washington Redskins have signed linebacker Randall Godfrey. To create room for Godfrey, the Redskins released linebacker Lemar Marshall.
Godfrey, an 11-year veteran, has spent the last three seasons with the Chargers. Before that, he played for the Titans, Seahawks, and Cowboys.
Marshall entered the league as an undrafted free agent in 2001, and has spent his entire career with the Redskins. He has been a starter for most of the past three seasons, and he was due to earn $1 million in 2007, the final year of his contract.

i cant even begin to understand this move.. just when you think the team has a grasp on things.. AND our D has been looking good why tinker now..
and lastly I would release a unproven rookie like Sartz before I ship out Lemar who will now probaly sign with the Eagle,Giants, or Cowboys to spite us

It's possible, but I won't give any credence to it until someone else picks it up.

Quite shocking if it's not. I always thought Marshall was a decent back-up LB who was versatile enough to play all three LB positions. Seems wrong to cut him for an older vet.

I'm not believing Vinny has the power to cut a player without the approval of JG and the rest of the staff.

I always thought Rule 1 was "Thou shall have no other team but the one true team, the Redskins" and Rule 2 had something to do with "thy neighbor's wife" or something.

Yeah, I think it was something like "Thou shalt convert thy neighbor, thy wife, thy neighbor's wife, and all of thy neighbor's household: the children, and plow-beasts, and every dog, cat, or crawling thing under his name", or something. Needless to say I didn't pay attention to well in prep school.

I see what your saying and Im not saying Marshall was a world beater but he was solid depth none the less.. but I guess his play has fallen off that much.. I did notice K. Campbell going in for Washington instead of Lemar but I still find this move shocking at this point in the preseason..
also I was always under the impression Godfrey played MLB.. did he fill in for Merriman on the outside last year?

I just heard it on WTOP NEWS 103.5 It appears to be true.

I have no idea if this is true, but here are some things to consider:
Lemar Marshall seems like the logical candidate to replace Washington, but Gibbs said the team's defensive coaches were still deliberating about whether to use Marshall, Khary Campbell, H.B. Blades or Dallas Sartz.
Linebacker Khary Campbell suffered a season-ending knee injury in the ninth game of 2004, his first in Washington. Every spring since, the Redskins have drafted two linebackers to threaten his job. In 2005, it was Robert McCune and Jared Newberry. In 2006, it was Rocky McIntosh and Kevin Simon. This year it was Dallas Sartz and H.B. Blades.
And yet, Campbell not only survives, he thrives. In 2005, Campbell led the special teams with 34 tackles. Last season, Campbell did it again with 37 despite missing the finale with a tender hamstring. While McIntosh is starting, McCune, Newberry and Simon are long gone. So Campbell didn't worry when outside backer Sartz was chosen in the fifth round in April and middle man Blades in the sixth.

"It happens every year," said Campbell, 28. "It's part of the job. Coach [Joe] Gibbs called and said they wanted to get depth at the position and it was nothing against me."
The only effect the arrivals of Sartz and Blades have had on Campbell is to give him more snaps at the two outside spots. Campbell worked mostly in the middle last year as he was the only true alternative to starter Lemar Marshall. With the signing of London Fletcher, Marshall is now the leading reserve, but Campbell is next in the pecking order ahead of the rookies, one of whom figures to be cut.
"We tried to give Khary more snaps outside because he had so many in the middle last year," said assistant head coach/defense Gregg Williams. "The more you can do, the better you are. Khary's a smart football player. We're just getting ready for the inevitable [injuries]. Whomever we have to throw in there, we don't want to feel like he's not ready to go. We want to throw in the next-best athlete as opposed to the next guy on the depth chart."
Campbell, who made the first start of his five-year career in place of the injured Marshall last Oct. 22 at Indianapolis, wishes he saw more time on defense but has come to accept reality.

I'd also add that everyone, and I mean EVERYONE, spoke of how Fletcher was a MAJOR upgrade at MLB. Marshall is a back-up and if Williams thinks he is not up to par, then I'm with Williams. K. Campbell may be impressing the coaches.

I'm flabbergasted.....He can be a fill in LB or fill in LB in pretty much any position(not starter mind you), but quality experienced depth. He must have pissed someone off big time.

It is actually true. Totally unexpected because Lemar knew the system and his true position was WLB and not MLB.
I can only speculate if he wanted out to start elsewhere but otherwise, it just makes very little sense to me. He was a decent backup for one of several LB positions. He suffered last season but all defense, including the DL did anyway.
I am sad to lose him.
