If you were negotiating the Portis/Bailey trade

I would do one of the following:
1. Bailey and 2nd round pick for Portis and 3rd round pick
2. Bailey and #5 overall pick for Portis and Denver's 1st round pick #24 overall i think.
Swapping 1 round picks would be good, since the Skins could then move down and get a D Tackle or D End, plus not have to pay top 5 money to a rookie.
If they keep the #5 they will need to get Sean Taylor or Winslow, since all other positions are not worth a #5 pick and WR/RB is coverred.
However, the Skins could trade Ramsey before draft day and regain a #1 pick and use the number 1 picks on Taylor and a QB to learn under Brunell (Manning, Rothlisberger, Rivers, Losman, etc.)
What is crazy is that it is not even March yet!!!

Hey, anything is possible. you know that.
My previous posts support keeping Ramsey 100% but there has been a lot going on the last 3 weeks. And if you read all of the Sexton interviews over the last few days you must admit it does not look good.
I really hope it is Sexton doing the talking and not Ramsey. Ramsey should remain the class act that he is and not get sucked into thinking like a greedy agent.

I would be more comfortable with the first scenario beacause, despite my stated pro-trade stance, I think we get too little in return to justify dropping 19 picks even with the cap space we would presumably gain.

I wouldn't trade #1's with Denver. If we have to give up our #2 to Denver, we would be smarter to trade our #1 to Indy, NE, or someone like that for their #1 and #2. A top 5 pick is too powerful these days to just give it away. It's the best bartering tool in the NFL!!

I don't want to move down- I want to grab Taylor or Harris with #5 overall. We aren't picking Winslow, Gibbs covets Jim Kleinsasser and will probably get him in free agency.

I'm still of the mindset that the 'Skins (presuming they really are pursuing this trade) just hold the line with the #5.
A playmaker like Portis, with Brunell or Ramsey is a pure God-send. If you can get two playmakers in the defensive backfield -- like Arrington and S. Taylor (who is in a better position to make plays than a shut-down CB) then you've really got something to build on.
The DL is a glaring hole -- but w/Bruce Smith ready to hang it up and a number of moves that could be made to clean up the salary numbers (Trotter, Canidate) - the Redskins can at least be healthy competitors in the free agent market.
And another point...the fact that they're getting all of this out of the way leaves them the time to openly pursue linemen once free agency opens. I feel like the last few years, they've focused on bigger names early on and had decent building blocks slip by them --- or go beyond their means once they've spent the money for the likes of Armstead & Trotter.

Trotter isn't going anywhere. Unless he is traded away, that is. We can't cut Trotter as he is getting far too much in the way of a signing bonus. Ask Boss Hog about this.

no trades either. we'd still have to eat the signing bonus. he's staying.

Ok, this is my updated trade:
DENVER GETS:
CB-Champ Bailey and 2nd round pick
WASHINGTON GETS:
RB-Clinton Portis, DT-Daryl Gardner, DE-Reggie Hayward
This will address RB, DT, and DE...Gardner got along with the Skins players and staff.

If Denver could do a sign and trade thing with Bertrand Berry (who's set to be an UFA) and throw him in with Portis and a second day pick (rounds 4-7), I think the trade would be worth giving up the 2nd rounder along with Champ. Better than Gardener, who's not the youngest guy on the block...

Gardner is only 31 (Tomorrow B-day).
He would make a good veteran that could teach some moves to a rookie DTackle.
Also, there are plenty of IHOP retaraunts in the DC Area

I thought that they released or were set to release Gardner...
Trotter would hurt us more by getting cut than by staying and playing with a DC that is attacking.
Trung or Betts may be going bye bye though...
If you guys want cap #'s we have 'em here...

I don't think Denver has released Gardner yet, but they definetly will. Why not throw him in the Portis trade?

I'm not against getting Gardner, but he would have to re-do his contract. We didn't sign him last year because he demanded to much, so why now, would he be worth all the money. He's a year older and wasn't exactly the model citizen in Denver.

Well one reason he would be worth more money now is we saw how much we missed him last season.
But you're right. One of the reason I'm hoping we get him is because after his trouble in Denver, he should be relativley cheap...

I'd flop it around on Denver - Broncos get Champ, Skins get Portis and their second round pick.
Or, the Skins get DT, Darius Holland (who took Gardener's place all season long - and he wasn't missed) and Portis, plus a sixth rounder from Denver.
I think Portis is very, very, very good. Champ is great - and the trade is upside down.
To me, the whole thing is based on pure fiction - Portis' agent and Champs agent dreamed this one up and sold it to someone who didn't see it coming... my cousin~! The Skins can't afford to cough up two starters for one guy.
The reinforces the notion that Ladell Betts was a wasted pick. Stephen Davis signed for less money than the Skins offered when he found the market too stiff. Champ won't find the same problem... he'll probably be the highest paid player in football history... for a couple of weeks.
