The Value of Preseason Games

You and I have heard it all before - preseason doesn't matter. It's about looking at the rookies and evaluating raw talent. It's not about "winning" or "losing".

Notwithstanding, I want the Redskins to win at least 2 games this preseason! Why?

I want this team to open the regular season knowing what it "feels like" to win! I want them to have that "winning attitude". I think that is just as important as evaluating talent.

Maybe I'm wrong about all of that, but for the Redskins to start the year off strong, I just think they're gonna need to win a few preseason games.

I agree...surprisingly, because I don't put much stock in preseason. But to lose all of the games is just plain bad for morale.

That's the same line of reasoning that the coaches seem to have this year, JH. I hope it works. :)

well i think it would be particularly devastating if we went 0-4 in the preseason this year since coach gibbs has put such an emphasis on winning preseason games this year. reports say that we might be playing starters a little longer because we want to win but if we do that and STILL lose all four games we may be in some serious trouble

The best part of preseason games for me is to see the Redskins drive the whole field on their first possesion for a touchdown (or a field goal at the bare minimum). Honestly, we only ever see one, two, maybe three drives that will even remotely resemble a true game-type scenario - and that's when we need to show our stuff.

Win or lose, it doesn't make much of a difference to me - as long as we are winning when the starters come off the field...

I agree 100%.

and as long as the Coach feels he got what he wanted out of the players.

Last year Gibbs didn't get what he wanted out of the players in preseason and he was peaved about it!

I agree, and I think that could be what Gibbs means when he talks about winning in the preseason. Mostly, he's said things like "we're not going to hold back" or something to that effect, not necessarily "we're going to try everything to win the games" (although he has mentioned winning).

That, and the fact that the 3rd stringers will be playing by the 4th quarter seems to indicate that Gibbs is really looking to get exactly what he wants from his players when they are in, not necessarily just to win a close one 21-19 (or something). Just my My 2 cents, really just a guess.

I def want to see the W's in preseason, at the very least 2 Ws. I won't want any dust on our guys shoulders by the start of the season. And a couple of W's helps the team momentum into the season.

Even if we don't get the W. As long as we played well. Last year, we looked just plan bad. Especially, when the starters did not score a single TD or even get in the red zone the entire preseason last year......just plan bad

Seeing how our pre-season record will depend in large part on the performance of Jordan Palmer and Todd Collins I'm not gonna sweat if we lose all of them, however I do agree with the sentiment that this team needs a winning attitude and losing 4 straight anything is demoralizing. I think we can beat the Titans on Sat night and we should.

Gibbs said some things in his presser yesterday I thought were interesting.

1. He spoke of changes in the defensive scheme and philosophy. We knew changes were coming, but he made it seem like numerous changes were made. That's good news in my opinion. He also spoke of how the overall speed on defense has improved with the addition of Fletcher and Landry and also said Rocky runs a legit 4.5. That speed should help and I think we saw some of that in the scrimmage, guys flying all over the place.

2. Gibbs said they were planning go after it more strategy wise on offense. Sounds like they plan to open it up this year and attack the defense. I think Jason and our running ability will allow them to do more and open up the passing game.

I agree with the sentiment that the preseason is not about winning - it's about how the starters perform first of all. We need to see signs that the offence, defence and special teams are all coming together as units. This is where we need the first shoots of recovery to show themselves, after the disaster that was last season.

After the starters come out, I really don't care if we lose, but we do then need to see some of the reserves stepping up. But when the reserves are in, it's more about individuals showing something, than it is about the team performing well as a unit. My 2 cents

Well, it's a long, tough, 16-game (at least; hopefully more for us) season, so reserves can matter very much. I'd like to see team do well even after the starters get off the field. Hopefully our reserves do well against the opponent's reserves, which they'll surely be facing. I don't see Tenn. leaving Vince Young out there for long.

They need to build their confidence up this preseason. That just the fact of the matter.

They can bulk up on confidence by not being super CIA agents and play like this is a live game. Gibbs doesn't want to start off in a slump like we did last year which just carried over from a bland preseason.

Get these boys amped up now and lets get things moving. An injury can happen if we're playing at full or half speed so let's just prepare the best we can and do what needs to be done. No more half steppin.

When you get right down to it, a few wins would be great, but I really just hope for one thing during the presason:

NO

INJURIES!!
