Art Monk #1

Someone other than the people on this board think that Art Monk is the #1 HOF canidate not in the hall.

1. Art Monk, wide receiver, Redskins

Like Reed, Monk's numbers are indisputable. He trails Reed by just 11 catches (940), ranking sixth; he is 11th in yards with 12,721 but ranks just 31st in touchdowns with 68. However, he once caught at least one pass in 183 consecutive games, and unlike Reed, Monk has three Super Bowl rings with three different quarterbacks (Joe Theismann, Doug Williams and Mark Rypien) throwing the passes.

Theismann once said "Art was Jerry Rice before Jerry Rice was," and one Hall of Fame voter said he "remains mystified" why his fellow selectors have not seen the light, if for no other reason than no one currently enshrined in the Hall has more catches than Monk.

Monk was as steady as they come, but he was a quiet man who did not have much to say, and maybe that's why the voters have looked down on him, teasing him with seven finalist appearances but rejecting him each time when it came to the final vote.

Monk played in three Pro Bowls, was named to the NFL's All-Decades team of the 1980s and is in the prestigious Redskins' Ring of Fame. Bill Parcells once said "Monk is headed to Canton downhill on roller skates." It has been a long hill, and sadly, the end is nowhere in sight

As much as you may hate him, ex redskin  Deoin Sanders lobbied for Monk on the NFL Network. As touching as Irvins speech was, I was dismayed at the lack of a mention of Art.

Monk should already be in the HOF - most knowlegeable NFL fans and most of the living members of the HOF consider that Monk should already be in the HOF and definetly should have been there before Irvin. IMO - Irvin is in there because of his team more than the fact that he was a very good WR.

I would be very surprised if we see any tears from Monk when he is inducted - unlike Irvin he will not have to consider himself very lucky to be there because he knows he belongs there.

The 2008 inductees should include at least 2 Redskins.

I cannot dispute Irvin's ability, he was great. But with that said, I believe if he's not an ESPN anaylst he's still waiting like Art. He obviously rode Emit Smith & Troy Aikman into the hall, and deservidly so, but not on the second vote. Thurman Thomas over Art Monk, come on give me a break. Art Monk's number's are just as good if not better than Irvin's and did it the "right way". It's nothing short of a crime that Monk is not in by now....

When Darrell Green is put in the hall, I hope that he mentions something about it. When Jerry Rice gets in, I hope he (likewise) does. It's their speech, so I wouldn't expect it or be upset if they didn't, but I think a high-profile voice like that might place a little more well-deserved shame on the media voters. A guy can dream, I guess. . .

I kinda expect them both to get in at the same time, as unlikely as that may be.

I doubt that the current voters will ever vote Monk in on his own merit for whatever flawed reasoning they may have. But from what I've heard on NFL network, next year doesn't have a lot of shoe-ins for the hall and what better way for them to create hype/money than for them to put 2 of the greatest skins in at once?

Im not saying that's how it should be but I think thats how they may play it.

Well if Peter King changed his mind on Monk perhaps there is hope for the other voters.

Forget about it. Most of the voters have an agenda and the younger ones did not even watch him play. To the young ones, it is a matter of statistics. While statistics alone would have been enough to get there, the timing, play and opportunity of his play made ALL the difference in the teams that he played.

EVERY time I saw a drive stall last season, I got reminded about the NEED to have somebody like Art who through his EFFECTIVE play would move the chains when it was needed the most.

Frankly, I do not care anymore. REALLY.

In the world of sports, Art Monk and Joe Gibbs are at the very top in my list of people that I look up to. Why should I care about what other biased, ignorant and stupid voters think or have to say?

The game changed in the 1990s. It baecame a pass happy league and here is some proof. This is the list of players to catch at least 100 balls in a season since 1990:

J Rice 1990 100
H Jeffires 1991 100
S Sharpe 1992 108
S Sharpe 1993 112
C Carter 1994 122
J Rice 1994 112
T Mathis 1994 111
B Perriman 1995 108
C Carter 1995 122
E Metcalf 1995 104
H Moore 1995 123
I Bruce 1995 119
J Rice 1995 112
L Centers 1995 101
M Irvin 1995 111
R Brooks 1995 102
C Pickens 1996 100
H Moore 1996 106
J Rice 1996 108
H Moore 1997 104
T Brown 1997 104
J Smith 1999 116
M Harrison 1999 115
E McCaffrey 2000 101
M Harrison 2000 102
M Muhammad 2000 102
J Smith 2001 112
K Johnson 2001 106
M Booker 2001 100
M Harrison 2001 109
R Smith 2001 113
T Brown 2001 101
H Ward 2002 112
M Harrison 2002 143
R Moss 2002 106
R Smith 2002 100
T Owens 2002 100
A Boldin 2003 101
R Moss 2003 111
T Holt 2003 117
T Gonzalez 2004 102
A Boldin 2005 102
L Fitzgerald 2005 103
S Smith 2005 103
T Holt 2005 102
A Johnson 2006 103

Now this is the list of NFL players to catch 100 balls or more prior to 1990:

A Monk 1984 106

Another interresting number is 1373. That is the number of receptions HoF WRs Swann, Stallworth, Lofton, and Irvin came up short of Monk's 940. Swann short by 604, Stallworth - 403, Lofton - 176, and Irvin - 190.

Monk will always be the NFL's all time leading reciever for players who started their carreer prior to 1985.

Also, look at the four guys sellected over Monk and you will see a common thread - they all played for HoF QBs. Granted Lofton didn't play with Kelly for very long, but he was the only guy on that list that someone could make a rational case to be selected over Monk. His total yards and yards per catch is just silly.
