Redskins G Thomas undergoes knee surgery

June 13, 2007
ASHBURN, VIRGINIA (TICKER) -- Washington Redskins guard Randy Thomas underwent successful arthroscopic surgery on his right knee Wednesday morning.

The procedure was performed by Dr. Ray Thal at the Reston Surgery Center. Thomas, 31, is expected to be ready for training camp in July.

An eight-year veteran, Thomas is coming off a strong 2006 season, starting 16 games at right guard for the Redskins.

Didn't we just resign Randy Thomas to an extension? Hate to hear this kind of thing but good he's taking care of it now. Interesting how he didn't reveal it before the signing. Guard will be a real need position for us on the new horizon.

What is it with these guys waiting until training camp or just before to have surgery? Would it have cut into his vacation plans to get the procedure done in January and rehab on his own time rather than during the preseason?

I think they try and see if rest will improve the injury without having surgery. Since it hasn't healed, Thomas get's "scoped" now in order to be back in time for training camp.

What makes you think the club didnt know about it? Why does everyone assume the worst?

if the club signed him to an extension without givng him a complete physical then they are idiots.

The FACT IS THOUGH that every player who dsigns a deal HAS to go through a physical, so there's no way the club didnt know about his knee condition.

if it were any kinf of a big deal we would haveheard about it. it was arthroscopic which means it was a scope, not a knife, and it was probably just to clean things up a bit.

If there is one thing I know about, its knee operations. I've had 4 already on my left knee. With todays technology, he can come back and be 100% in weeks. Being that it sounds like something minor (minor cartilage tear or calcium deposits I'm guessing). He will be fine. The key is to not let him on the field before he should. I would hope that they keep him off the field for a long time. End of July or keep him out of preseason all together.

Why does everyone look at a knee condition as a minor thing? You need healthy knees to play football at a high level, especially in the pros. It's not just a simple procedure and that's it, it's fixed. It must be rested to recuperate it and then strengthened. If it isn't, it could lead to a more serious knee injury. Psychologically, having a knee one must protect affects your play too. Also, this is a guy who weighs over 300 pounds.

Losing Dockery last year to free agency and now Thomas gets scoped, why shouldn't I be concerned? Guard is not an insignificant position. I don't think Thomas is known for his conditioning and has a penchant for eating on a grand scale. Watch how the coaches react and I'm sure you'll see a great deal of concern for the position in the Redskins camp. At least they know that they can't afford to have a blase attitude about it.

As far as the trainers, etc, knowing about it? That's a big leap you're making. Not likely. You're tipped off to these things by the player, then you do an MRI. They don't perform those diagnostics unless they are deemed necessary and the magnetism or radiation (x-rays) aren't something you want to dole out routinely. I had physicals and none of them included MRIs or X-rays.

Just out of curiosity why did a knee surgery wait until June?

They probably did a second MRI and saw it.

I strained my knee this off-season, got an MRI, it didn't show much more than a strain, so I was scheduled for a second MRI once the internal swelling went down.

Probably same thing with Thomas.

Let me repeat myself.
They signed him to an extension.
They HAD to have given him a physical.
If you think otherwise, and IF YOU ArE RIGHT, then our front office is being run by a bunch of idiots.

You are right that knee injries CAN be bad, but many of today's procedures are done to clean things up, to make players, who arent even in any pain but whose range of motion might be limited, play at a higher level without nay restrictions.

Again, if it were serious, we'd know about it, kind of like the whole Marcus Washington degenerative hip condition problem...

When i think of bad knees I think of Mark Schlereth, who had about 19 procedures, most of which were NOT arthroscopic, and he played in how many pro bowls?
