Redskins signed Jeremetrius Butler...HECK YES, that's what I'm talking about! A DB that can cover, once again a referendum on Springs. Great Move here.

Didn't the Redskins sign him to an offer sheet a couple of years ago, only to have the Rams match it?

I guess this is a good signing if he comes cheap and there's no penalty if he doesn't make the roster. Otherwise, things are starting to get crowded back in the secondary. Wonder if this makes anyone -- like Springs -- expendable.

Cool, a decent corner to backup our best DB springs), Smoot, Carlos and whomever else that escapes my mind at the min.

I don't know if it makes Springs expendable, but it does make life much easier should he get hurt again this year.

David Macklin and (depending on how deep on the chart you want to reference) Ade Jimoh.

he'll be a good depth guy in case some one gets hurt.. and some one wil get hurt its just the way of the game.. but i was rooting byron westbrook and this kind of strengthen the odds against him

Just to put this signing into perspective, the Rams chose to keep Mike Rumph over Jeremetrius Butler. Enuf said.

Man, we gave up Chip Cox for THIS guy? Good grief.

Yeah. We wanted to sign him a few years ago, but after that he's had trouble keeping a starting job in Saint Louis afaik.

I wouldn't expect miracles, or even decent play, from this guy. Losing your job to Mike Rumph...my god.

i dont think he lost his job to Rumph, the Rams just thought he was too much of a injury risk i guess. but man o man we got depth in the secondary now

Wish they would start signing d-linemen like they are DB's

An average at best secondary to start the off-season suddenly looks very solid.

Only thing is... Springs, Smoot, Rogers, Butler, Macklin. Between Butler and Macklin, we have two guys way too overqualified to be a fourth CB. Plus, Butler or Macklin should never be a fifth CB.

Someone will be gone, but I like the depth.

Solid could turn into Great IF we're able to generate pressure on the QB consistently this year.

yeah, we seem to do well when we sign members of the rams secondary. How did that last one turn out?

I think those fans who are fooling themselves that the Skins will keep Shawn Springs should see this as being a move in that general direction barring circumstances that may prevent it or make it unwise to move him.

I predict we will try to trade Springs for the highest draft pick we can muster up for him. Why? He simply didn't live up to his contract and won't budge on restructuring it. This move won't happen right away, not until another team that gets hit with camp injuries or holdouts and gets desparate. I'm thinking he'll go for a sixth rounder to another team that needs depth at CB. The only way we keep Springs is if we get hit with some unforeseen injuries at CB. If the Patriots have issues signing Assante Samuel, they'd certainly have some interest. The Pats won't let any player hold them hostage. We saw what they did last year with SB MVP Deion Branch.

As for Byron Westbrook, if he doesn't make the active roster, he's still a candidate for the practice squad.

I think it's impossible to know for certain what they plan to do with Springs at this point. I think you can just as easily call this a depth signing.

Exactly, everyone was hyped up for Wright and Rumph last year too...

The truth of the matter is, these guys are journey men for a reason. If anyone thinks these guys can compare to Springs you're fooling yourself. Springs even at his age if still a top tier CB, surely not what he used to be but clearly the #1 on this team.

Until Smoot find his groove, Springs isn't expendable...ESPECIALLY with a questionable pass rush.

I hope you're right about being solid, but Butler hasn't defended a pass since 2004, so I'm not holding my breath about this being a great pick up... the local radio stations here in StL are giggling again about the Redskins taking leftovers from a really bad defense... Our only real problem in the secondary is not having a true number 1 Corner...

We have one....he's just not on the field too often.

Everyone is expendable. Champ Bailey was expendable and he lived up to his contract to the nth degree.

I think the Skins are looking to Carlos Rogers to step up to the plate and be the No. 1 CB we thought we drafted. They're just going to put him out there, sink or swim. Smoot or Macklin on the other side is an adequate #2. Whichever of those two doesn't start as the #2 serves as the main backup.

I don't know why you and FIOS love Springs so much. If you watched him vs. Dallas last year, he got burned continually by TO and Crayton. I think he has 7 INTs in three years. His best days are long gone and he was largely a bust signing. If we are really low on CBs, we'lll hang on another year but I think we'll make every effort to move on while he has some value. If he's on the field starting, he'll only be preventing a younger player from emerging.

The guy has played in 6 games in the past 2 seasons...and you're saying that?

Edit for BH:

That's crazy talk.

More depth in the secondary. I love it.

I really miss football season.

I've been saying all off-season Springs was out of here this year, now I'm not so sure.

The fact that he isn't willing to re-work his contract is something every trade partner will be aware of which will make that list a lot shorter than it would be if he were willing to take a pay cut. With the Skins current cap situation Springs isn't really in danger of being cut to free up space unless there is a major deal out there that would require the Skins to free up a lot of space. If Springs isn't here he'll more than likely be cut late in camp.

Butler, Macklin, Jimoh, Westbrook and Eubanks, and Leigh all competing for the last two spots? Looks like Eubanks and Leigh are the long shots, Macklin should be the number 4 and Westbrook should hang around on the practice squad. It looks like Jimoh vs Butler for that last CB spot.

My 2 cents
