Portis doesn' t always have to have an opinion

PORTIS SUPPORTS VICK
Redskins running back Clinton Portis and left tackle Chris Samuels have spoken out in support of Falcons quarterback Michael Vick, who currently is caught up in a dog-fighting investigation.
But they're not saying that Vick is innocent. Per Portis, it's no big deal if Vick is guilty.
"I don't know if he was fighting dogs or not, but it's his property, it's his dog," Portis told WAVY-TV. "If that's what he wants to do, do it."
As Portis spoke, Samuels started laughing, and at one point raised his eyebrows with (as we interpret it) an "oh sh-t I can't believe he's saying this" look on his face.
"I think people should mind their business," Portis added.
In response to the question of whether dog-fighting is prevalent in the NFL and the NBA, Portis said, "I mean it's prevalent in life. . . . I'm from Laurel, Mississippi. I know a lot of back roads that got the dog fight if you want to go see it."
Um, we're not licensed to practice law in Virginia, but we don't think that the Commonwealth has formally recognized the defenses of "everybody does it" or "if it's behind closed doors, it's okay."
And if we didn't know better (and, actually, we don't), we'd be inclined to wonder whether Portis has been to a few of those dog fights in Laurel, Mississippi.
Or in Surry County, Virginia.
And Clinton's comments provide even more reason to believe that Ray Buchanan said what Chris Landry said he said about Vick and dog fighting. The lesson here is that current and former NFL players look out for each other, no matter how ridiculous they look or sound when doing so.
Need more evidence that Portis should be ignored on this point? He refers to Vick as a "positive role model." We need to know whether Clinton gave Mike this label for giving the middle finger to the home fans (including kids) or giving an STD to the ex-girlfriend. Or maybe he's referring to the water bottle thing. There are just so many positive things from which to choose.
This goes under the "Dumb A.. Statement of the Year" Award. Clinton needs to mind his own business. He may be friends with Vick or feel he is supporting him but if I were Portis I would say that I don't have a comment on it. I would steer clear because now he looks like maybe he knew about it or approves of this. The "Common Man" doesn't understand this mentality.

Where was the proverbial foot in the proverbial mouth???
Once other players understand that animal cruelty is not entirely different than racial or gender discrimination in the courts of law -and- in the courts of public opinion, they will develop greater sensitivity.
This is the job of the Commissioner. He will take care of Vick. This issue is going to cost Vick quite a bit in more ways than money and fame.

I don't see Vick getting anymore endorsements. Well at least I wouldn't want him endorsing my product.

I think Portis is right. . .not about Vick being a role model, though. . .

It doesn't surprise me he said that at all. And I don't mean that it was an ok thing to say, I'm just not at all surprised that he would say it. Whats that thing about "core guys" again?

This is just Portis being Portis, What did he really say that was wrong?
This is me being the "Homer" that I can sometimes be regardless of the color of glasses I'm wearing. But they're not saying that Vick is innocent. Per Portis, it's no big deal if Vick is guilty.

Why would it be a big deal if "Ron Mexico" is guilty? It wouldn't be to CP anyway, I think Vick would have a different outlook.
As Portis spoke, Samuels started laughing, and at one point raised his eyebrows with (as we interpret it) an "oh sh-t I can't believe he's saying this" look on his face.
If Portis also saw Samuels do this, than it was affirmation that he was headed in the right direction with his response
"I think people should mind their business," Portis added.
Again I see nothing wrong with this staement - People should mind their own business, that includes the DA, law enforcement and those that are in the business of protecting animals
In response to the question of whether dog-fighting is prevalent in the NFL and the NBA, Portis said, "I mean it's prevalent in life. . . . I'm from Laurel, Mississippi. I know a lot of back roads that got the dog fight if you want to go see it."
This is a true statement, it's not just ball players at these events and everyone is not there for the fights. He didn't say it was OK to go to the fights he just said that they're out there.

OK you got me on that one

He did test positive but I wouldn't call him a role modle based on what he's done since turning pro.

The Falcons have invested what $130 million in Michael Vick. And this guy is constantly in trouble. There was an issue with him giving some girl herpes, then there was a big issue about flipping the crowd off and now this whole dog fighting. Vick is not worth all the headache especially when you have all your money tied up in this guy. Portis on the other hand needs to mind his own business. And someone of the comments Ports made is just stupid. Oh and I also forgot to mention about the whole water bottle thing. The Falcons made a mistake in trading Matt Schaub. The Falcons need to say goodbye to Michale Vick, plus the guy is overrated.

If Michael Vick is guilty, he is among the lowest of the low schum in this world.
If he is guilty, would like to have Vick be put in the ring with one of these dogs. Then we will see how tough he thinks he is. Then, I would like to have him treated the same as any other loosing dog. Have someone kick him in the ribs, beat him with a whip or bat and then let him live out what is left of his life in pain.
As for Clinton Portis, he deserves the same treatment. I have no more respect for CP. He is trash!!

Hate it or love it, Portis is cocky, arrogant and down right narcissistic. He thinks he could start the season with no practice and still rush for 1500, he thinks he can fake injuries YES I SAID FAKE'EM to get out of workouts and he'll get away with it...why? because he's Clinton Portis. And Clinton Portis does whatever Clinton Portis feels like doing.

So,
1) I knew about this guy who abused animals. He should be left alone. Everybody else should mind its own business.
2) I knew about this guy who abused women. He should be left alone. Everybody else should mind its own business.
3) I knew about this guy who abused children. He should be left alone. Everybody else should mind its own business.
4) I knew about this guy who abused people from other ethnic groups. He should be left alone. Everybody else should mind its own business.
5) I knew about this guy who gambled on football and used illegal drugs. He should be left alone. Everybody else should mind its own business.
Find me one player who is without fault?
I feel that there are -LINES- between not being perfect and basically being accused and found guilty of a CRIME. Nobody could find anybody else without fault in any endeavour in life, let alone the NFL. But THAT inability does not justify the presence of CRIMINALS in the game.
It is different to have a BIG MOUTH than to commit a CRIME.
OK Mr. Commissioner, we are watching and waiting.

Remember Portis a few years ago............."If I'm in the news for something I shouldn't be in the news for. Don't bash me its just a young man living."
Leave the guy alone. He has a right to his own opinion!

Let's hope it's just his opinion. I guarantee you, right now there is some ambitious young sport reporter from the Laurel (MS) Leader-Call, beating the bushes around CP's old haunts, digging for someone who has seen him at dog fights, seen him at cock fights, participated in dog fights, or any other dirt around this. Hope all his aquaintances there like him... this may just return.
There are times you just sit and watch. Hope this wasn't one of them.

Wow... Sellers is my favorite Redskin followed by Portis a close second. No more. What scum Portis is for saying this. Anyone that thinks dog fighing or any kind of animal cruelty should be left to that person's business is a truly sad example of a human being. I own several rescue dogs from abuse cases and it is not a pretty sight to see a boxer puppy being used as pit bull fighting bait.
Clinton Portis, if he truly thinks that it's ok for people to fight dogs, should be thought less of by every redskin fan out there. Can't wait for him to get hurt and get carted off so I can cheer it like he's probably cheered on a dog being bitten to death. UGH.

The subjeect of dog fighting has some very vivid memories for me. I had a client that called me one day and wanted me to rush out to his ranch. He didn't say why. When I got there, the police had arrested him for dog fighting. After seeing the horrors that he had inflicted, many of the items in his company P&L made more sense. I turned everything over to the District Attorney. To ths day, I remember the horrors I saw there.
The dogs, they are beaten, shocked with cattle prods and electrical cords, terrorized and brutalized. They don't get a choice or big bucks, they only get to fight again until they loose. If they are lucky, they get killed quickly.
If CP is just being a young man, he is a stupid young man and trash. In my opinion!.

let's see...basically you're saying that it's alright to dog fight?....
second off...you're saying that law enforcement, slash everyone else should not be involved with anything....
it just doesn't make sense....Portis was stupid to say what he said...he was basically saying that dog fighting is fine...let people do what they want if they own something...so does that mean if you have a gun you should be able to shoot people?
or if you have a dog in this case then you should put it up against another dog in a fight...?
I am just wondering how you get to the point of where Portis was right on what he has said....b/c he is a redskin and he's Portis?
What were your thoughts on dogfighting, etc. before this all occurred without the statement from Portis..along with that and the law enforcement situation...what do you think about DUI's? Rape? Murder? Animal Cruelty? Abuse?
Abuse, Murder, Animal Cruelty basically fall into one category so you are basically saying that this whole situation is fine?

Well, if you love Portis for his flashy outrageousness, and his quotability, then this is the flip side.
Personally, I'd prefer it if he kept his mouth shut all the time - there are very few professional sportsmen who have anything of merit to say on most subjects.
If you keep opening your mouth like Portis does, sooner or later something nasty will come out of it.
The sad fact is that Vick is a role model for a lot of kids, and his example will damage them further down the line.

Basically people read into things too much or they just get the words mixed up and miss the whole point. I comment on what CP said and out of that you got how CP AND I feel about Dog fighting. I didn't say it was OK (granted I didn't say it wasn't). I replied about coments others made about Portis comments and all of a sudden, you know how I feel about dog fighting.

There you go putting words in someone's mouth again. Portis said a lot of things and was pretty vague with some of it. It gets posted on PFT and now CP is crusing towns for dog-fights.

I said there was nothing wrong with what he said, I didn't say he was right. He commented on Vick's situation and you act like he was his partner in crime.

Yeah they may not have Vicks issues but I said find me one without a fault. There are some wacko's out there bet people need to step off of their pedestal.

I agree with you, but the organization is always like we won't take this guy or that guy because they have character issues and we are the almighty squad, but in reality they have portis, and even though he is a guy that gibbs didn't have control over in getting, you dont have a perfect moral team. So draft and sign the best players, not saints.

I think and hope that a lot of what Portis is reported to have said is not exactly as it has been presented.
I'm all for signing the most talented players and hopefully having a team that is the best in the NFL.
I also understand that the NFL has some rules about the type of behavior that will be tolerated and which will not. If any player (especially given recent developments) in any way diminishes the image of the NFL then they should be severely punished. The image of the NFL is very important for TV revenues which far outweighs any income the NFL receives.
This morning I heard an Atlanta fan say that if Blank did not punish Vick if he was found to be even lying about not having any knowledge about what was going on in VA - this fan was not interested in any police charges - he said if Blank does not take action against Vick, he was going to return all recent purchases from Home Depot!!
The NFL is quite correct in really jumping ugly on anyone in the NFL who is not very careful about the NFL image. If you are in today's NFL you better abide by their rules - that does not mean you have to be convicted - that means
do not do or say anything that hurts the NFL image - if you are a player in the NFL you are basically agreeing to abide by the NFL rules and their "code of conduct" - IF NOT, GET ANOTHER JOB!
