CP has Knee issues

Asked about the health status of Portis, Gibbs revealed that the sixth-year running back has developed tendonitis in his knee. Portis visited with Dr. James Andrews, the team's medical consultant in Birmingham, Ala., on Wednesday.
The tendonitis in his knee flared up last week. It is not considered serious.
"He has had some soreness in his knee, but he said he could run and work out on it," Gibbs said. "He's on his weight [training] program. We'll see how the running goes. We'll see how quickly we can get him back.
"The main thing now is to get it taken care of now. What we don't want is this when we go to camp."
Portis has been continuing to rehab from offseason shoulder surgery. The shoulder is holding up well through the rehab, team officials said.

This is potentially pretty serious and the window of opportunity will close soon on Portis I'm afraid, so I hope we rest him almost up until the first game. Seriously. It's not common to get tendonitis in the knee. This is bad news.

...tendons and ligaments are very slow to heal if injured, and rarely regain their original strength. Partial tears heal by the rapid production of disorganized type-III collagen, which is weaker than normal tendon. Recurrence of injury in the damaged region of tendon is common.

Thanks for the update Frank, but with the Washington media - I'm sure this will become "career threatening" over the next week!

Being a professional athlete, he has access to some of the best doctors, best trainers, and best rehab programs you can get. As for us, HMO/PPO Members, we are limited by which doctors, Physical Therapist, etc we get to see. Not to mention, the condition that you are in when the injury happens plays a big part in your final outcome. Now from what I know about this (I've had 4 knee operations on my left knee 3 ACL's and 4 meniscus) is that its about strengthening the muscles around the effected tendon. Rest is also important coming off the injury. So I think that the coaches are having him take care of this. He may not be 100% at the start of the season, but with Betts and depending who proves themselves in preseason, we have the opportunity and confidence to rest Portis. I'm not to concerned. Someone mentioned that this doesn't happen much but I feel that I frequently hear about tendentious with players. I'm sure it isn't common with your average CPA or Used Car Salesman.

I don't like this at all. Not just for the skins but for CP. He's got to be frustrated. Every time here lately, he heals up and something else is wrong. I know he has more to prove. I really hope these group of injuries will end and not continue one after the other. Man I hope it heals quickly.

I am really glad that all of the Betts trade talk is dead. CP is my favorite player but you don't buy a ferrari without having insurance!

I don't know what to think of all this. I guess I'd like to see how it plays out this season with him, Betts and Blaylock.

I think we should just trade Portis!! His value is still high right now and trading him would really help this team! We can then talk Tiki Barber out of retirement and................Superbowl champs!

I think Portis' trade value is taking a dive as we speak. If I were trading for Portis right now, I wouldn't give more than a third round pick. Shoulder and knee, plus heavy use. If I were Gibbs, I would satisfied this year if he could back up Betts.

I read this too. Big whoop. Don't believe everything you read in print. Tendonitis is what it is. You can downplay it but it is degenerative. It won't heal like a surgically repaired knee. That's the nature of it. I'm certain this will shorten his career to some degree or affect his play, especially if he comes back too soon.
Like I said, they had better sit Portis through most of the preseason if this condition is real. I happen to believe, however, that a lot of reported injuries in the NFL are completely false, meant to throw off oponents' schemes. Not saying that this is the case here, but it's possible. I think Tom Brady's shoulder was reported "probable" on a weekly basis the past two years by Bellichick. Portis also might want a medical excuse to skip camp and preseason to avoid another serious injury and to get more time to rehab his shoulder.

False analogy. ACL etc is different than tendonitis. The key to understand is that this weakens your muscles. This as a bunch of micro tears in the tendons. There's nothing surgically you can do to repair it. Your body and rest may work given enough time, but if Portis tries to do training camp this summer, his years left are numbered. This can lead to an arthritic condition too or be a sign of one.
You don't regain the same strength in your tendons either. I don't care if you are superman and you have a team of doctors working around the clock from Johns Hopkins. Look up the treatment for this condition. Don't take my word for it.
I find it suspcious that tendonitis wouldn't be considered serious. They're either downplaying this or it's a "made-up" injury.

I think that the "report" is based on factual "reports"

and that Portis will be given the treatment
and the time to ensure that he will continue to be our best RB this year and beyond.
I do not see the point in getting too concerned about it as if this condition were likely to even remotely affect his abilities then I'm pretty sure the "reports" would have been worded very differently - if at all

Wow, great job with the Skins retaining Betts!
I really hope they rest Portis, hopefully Blaylock will be decent enough.

From WebMD
Tendinitis Overview
Tendons themselves are cords of tough, fibrous connective tissue that attach muscles to bones. Tendinitis is an inflammation of the tendon. The condition may also involve the tendon sheath, usually close to where the tendon goes into the muscle.
Tendons are generally healthy structures that appear glistening white to the naked eye. If you've ever carved a turkey, the tendons are the tough bands you cut through to get the drumsticks apart.
Tendinitis Treatment
Self-Care at Home
* Rest
* Immobilization of affected extremity
* Ice to affected area
* Elevation of affected extremity
* Use of over-the-counter nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications (such as Advil or Aleve)

I forgot about the signature, I made that just piss someone off.

But I still don't think Betts is as good as CP.

I'm going to hold out hope that this is just a result off overworking his knee. He's been exercising only his lower body for quite some time and may simply have over worked himself.
