The Greatest Goal Ever Scored?

That's what some people are saying
about this one.
Here is what I can confirm:
1. That is soccer
2. That is a goal

ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ........Nothing compared to a touchdown. Any touchdown for that matter.

I agree that this goal is kinda boring but I've certainly seen goals that compare favorably to the most exciting touchdowns

Soccer had one chance to get me when the World Cup was here. I was ready to root for my heritage teams (English, German and Dutch).
But I got so sick of every time two sissy boys ran near each other the wind blew them both over. Every so often one would stay down and be carried off the field and the other would get a yellow card. Then miraculously run back on the field the first chance they got, man what a recovery.
The referees fell for it every time! Hello, BUY A CLUE! They are FAKING! But two minutes later the same thing and the referees fell for it again.
And what was all this for? To get some tiny advantage of possession of the ball 100 yards from the goal and it would change possessions a half dozen times before it got near it anyway.
The women's cup redeemed it some, they would smash into each other and keep going. At least they played like men (in a good way, not in a leaving the toilet seat up way) even if the men were a bunch of wusses.

If you have ever played soccer at a higher level than AYSO then you can appreciate this goal. The timing and the fact that he kicked it with the other foot behind his pivot foot. Are you kidding me. There isn't much appreciation on here.

I personally find soccer to be very boring. Therefore, a player that kicks at best an "average" looking goal doesn't impress me. Maybe I am not seeing the whole picture but then again I don't really care to. Compare that goal to a 70 yard Barry Sanders touchdown run and you will see a stark contrast in entertainment value. A person that had never watched either sport would find Barry Sanders to be much more entertaining.

I have no clue whether that is the greatest goal ever scored in soccer.
However, I do know that this is the greatest kick ever missed:

I've watched it half a dozen times, and I still can't quite work out how he did that.

Talking to Americans about soccer is about as productive as having sex to protest your right to virginity.
Great goal... phenomenal skill... but only a handful of people here will even know the game well enough to appreciate it.

Agreed, but can you explain the constant falling down to me? I mean I understand they are doing it for a foul and the ball, but it's such a tiny advantage and it makes the stupid sport unbearable to watch. Do soccer fans like that? Why don't they EVER call diving? I mean come on.
Also keep in mind most of my viewing of soccer is World Cup, so on the falling down maybe they don't do that as much in league play, you can comment on that. But in the World Cup the falling down is ENDLESS.

Of course, all that is true, but, I certainly won't be up in arms if a Euro doesn't get excited in seeing an unassisted triple play or a perfect game. They don't care about baseball, nor should they... soooo... what's the big deal?

Sad, but true. I have no problem with people not liking "soccer", but I do wish they'd keep those comments out of every thread that people start regarding the sport.

For those who are at all interested in great goals, then these two are brilliant and remarkably similar. Unfortunately, they're both by Argentinians, but great goals are great goals.
For those interested in diving, it's interesting to note the number of times that either player could have fallen to the ground.

He didn't use his head...
He didn't flip head over heals to kick the ball into the goal...
And he certainly didn't kick it in a heavy snowfall from well over 40 yards with the chance to go to the Superbowl on the line.
This kick, while impressive, was uncontested and was like hitting a half court shot in basketball. it take a lot of tallent to get the ball close, but even more luck to get it to go in.
Not the best ever goal by a long shot!

Of course it isn't the best goal ever, but it is astounding. I defy anybody to get any kind of power into a shot like that.

Flopping takes place in most sports. Basketball is ridiculous with it. Hockey players do it all the time. Is soccer the only sport you have a problem with flopping in?
Personally, I hate flopping. It's a lazy man's tool. Rather than flopping to try to draw a bogus foul call, try actually playing defense or admitting that the guy who stole the ball/blocked the shot/drove the lane made a nice play.
That being said, I don't stop watching any of the sports because of that.

I need to preface this by saying that I love the sport of soccer and think it's one of the more pure and elegant games out there -- far more fluid and novel-like than a typical NFL game.
JansenFan wrote:Flopping takes place in most sports.
I agree, but many sports have rules that help minimize it. I don't think -- and this is an American with fairly typical 'sports fan' American exposure to soccer, so take it for what it's worth -- soccer refs enforce the rules that are in place to minimize it. If they were more consistent in calling out divers it might not be as much a part of the game.
Basketball is ridiculous with it.
Agreed. . .
Hockey players do it all the time.
They do, but refs are
very quick to give penalties to players that dive. Diving still happens, but I think it's discouraged far more effectively in the NHL than in professional soccer leagues.

I'm with you on these sentiments. I also think I would have more tolerance for flopping if I grew up watching sports where it was more a part of the game.
We tend to tolerate the pace of NFL games -- with countless interruptions, breaks, and delays for calls or timeouts, etc. -- without too much complaint.

Against my better judgement, here is something for the diving fans:

Um....no.
Nice logical twist there. By that I mean I didn't say nor did I mean what you said.
So case in point. I'm a Red Wing fan. Our goalie, and I love him, is Dominick Hasek. This year he flopped in a game late in the season and gave up what turned out to be the winning goal. The refs didn't give him the flop. Our coach bashed him in the press saying he's a flopper, he's not going to get the calls. I applauded:
- The refs for not giving him the calls when he's a flopper
- Babcock for calling him out.
In the playoffs he was run into what was clearly NOT a flop and didn't get the call. Again I yelled at Hasek (on the TV) to stop flopping. No way I blame the Refs, . How do they know that time he wasn't flopping?
But the bottom line, dude, is I didn't say I was OK with other sports flopping. But in my view soccer is worse because in my observation the refs seem to have not clue they are flopping. Do you recall in my story that Hasek actually paid a price for flopping? Do soccer players? I haven't seen it. Sorry I asked. I didn't realize I had to cover my view of flopping in other sports BEFORE I could ask a question about soccer. You didn't send me that memo.

Someone piss in your wheaties this morning? It was just a question. I was just curious because you said it made soccer unbearable to watch, so I was questioning whether you had that problem in other sports.
Enjoy your move. I know I will.
