Unbelievable. First, he retires thinking that he's got it made. Next, the Dolphins take back millions and millions of dollars due to contract violations.

So Ricky decides to get back in the game and try and make some money. So far so good. Then he is out of shape, followed by a couple more drug suspensions.

Even then, not everything is lost. He makes his way through the CFL for a year, pays his dues, works through a broken arm, and is looking like he might be back in the NFL. Then this.

The maddening thing is that, even after his first 'retirement' and re-entry into the league, if he could have just put his head down and put 2-3 solid years of effort into the game, he would have stayed a comfortable millionaire, ready to retire to a life of luxury. He could sit back in a hot tub on a huge piece of property with a mansion and smoke to his content the rest of his days.

At any point in this escapade, in fact, if he had just focused for 3-4 more years and forgotten about pot in the meantime, he could have gotten what he wanted all along.

There's even a chance for him now. He's going to be 30, and he'll probably be 31 before he can make solid contributions to a team. His body doesn't have nearly as much wear-and-tear as other 30 year olds, so he'll have some life left in those legs. If he can make one more sincere apology -- accepting whatever discipline they administer without complaint -- and follow it up with action, he'll be fine. He can play 4 or even 5 years in the league, make eight digits of cash, and retire to his natural healing and pot lifestyle.

I don't know why, but there's this part of me that really hopes he comes clean and resurrects the tail-end of his career.

I wonder if he's baned from the NFL if that is the argument his attorneys are going to use saying that the NFL won't allow him to play for the Dolphins and he shouldn't have to pay the money back.

He really is an idiot!

Ricky Williams smokes pot?? No kidding?

What a moron. Lol. Smoke the ganja after you retire, it's not like it's going anywhere.

Nah those are two seperate events.

When he retired from the NFL, at that point he owed the Dolphins the money. That's one transaction.

He returned to earn back what he lost from that. That's a whole other one.

In theory since drug suspensions are part of the collective bargaining agreement, it should cover the financial part of suspensions as well. No idea if it actually does or how specific it is though.

I'm not saying I never done it. It was fun in high school and college. Now my job requires that i pass drug tests on a regular basis. Although I am very well compensated, my income doesn't come close to matching pro athlete status. If i can stay clean for my income, why can't these idiots stay clean for theirs?

not defending ricky but, they may have the most physical stress on their bodies of any profession; thats why they smoke. Plus they can afford it, and a lot of players hang out with coat-tailers who live off them like leaches, and smoke too. it would then be hard not to smoke when you are around people who are and are so happy and relaxed and pain free.

your career situation is not too comparable

ROTFALMAO - normally when people are making comments that they want the rest of us to understand are really stupid or a joke they use those little emoticons - you are kidding, right?

I would not be upset to never see this stupid person play again - what a complete waste - I hope the Dolphins ensure that this guy loses any money owed or paid to him recently - I hope he has nothing left to show for the stupid choices he has made.

totally agree about the lifestyle choice and looking forward to seeing Ricky in the papers a lot (pardon the pun) just nothing to do with the NFL fortunately

I hope this idiot (mental retard) gets everything he deserves from his life to his financial security

I am an Air Traffic Controller, and you are right, there isn't a whole lot of physical stress, but there is mental stress. If he screws up on the field the team loses yards or maybe possession of the ball. If I screw up people die. Ricky needs to grow up and join the real world and quit coming up w/ all of these excuses for being a dumba$$

I agree - I hope that those that are still doing it get caught  - if you are lucky enough to be a part of the NFL and you risk your future and hurt your team, you are making it obvious that neither means very much to you. I hope they ban these guys for a year - anybody they can catch doing drugs deserves everything Goodell can come down with.

I mean...I have nothing against smoking pot at all. For most people. But these guys are liberally flaunting the rules that govern their profession, and the law itself. They should be held to a higher standard than the rest of us, because they're certainly paid like it.

Why should he receive any sympathy? If a lawyer was caught smoking pot as many times as Ricky Williams has, he'd similarly be barred from practicing his position. It's the rules you agree to when you sign up to do your job.

And his excuse of social anxiety disorder is so incredibly weak. If he really has that disorder, he could go to a physician and get any number of completely legal anti-anxiolytic drugs to help him.

Does it really help though, if it's legal and anti-anxiolytic and a drug at the same time? sounds like something a bunch of people here might want to try
