3-4 Defense?

This is probably ancient and has probably been bandied about a million times but ...
Are we thinking of going 3-4?
Has Williams ever coached it as a base defense?
I ask because we keep picking up secondary and linebackers.
If we go this way, who would be our nose - Griff?
I actually think it might work to go 3-4 and rush 1 to 3 backers/corner/safety. Pettibon pretty much did this to the Broncos in the SB and they were pretty discombobulated. It also turned Thurman Thomas into a blocking back in another SB.

No. It won't happen.

We don't have the type of Dlinemen or LB's to go 3-4.

I've been watching the Redskins since 1974 and I've never seen the team, EVER, line up in a 3-4 defense. Not sure why that is, but it just isn't in them. I thought Greg Williams had a 3-4 in Buffalo but I must have been mistaken about that.

Williams uses it as a scheme sometimes but never as a base. Skins need to stick with the 4-3. Jazz is right, we don't have the personnel.

Were built on 4-3. People are just getting a lil misunderstood cus now we have good depth at LB.

I believe we ran some situational 3-4 the first year greg was here. If he thinks it will work I'm sure he'll try it.

Yeah, this has been discussed many times before. People get hung up on the idea of a 3-4. In reality, we use a 3-4 all the time. We just line up in a 4-3 and disguise how we're going to rush the QB. When a DE drops into a shallow zone, you are leaving 3 DL to cover the gaps. When one DL has to cover two gaps, he is effectively the NT of a 3-4, period. Doesn't matter how you lined up initially. So the answer to your question is YES, we will use the 3-4.
Just don't think we're going to run it very often or that we will ever line up in a 3-4 proper with only 3 guys in the stance. It takes a big powerful NT to cover two gaps all game long. We don't have that kind of player. If a team sees us line up in a 3-4 with Grif as the NT, then a quick audible to a gut run play would probably exploit that weakness in the middle. So we'll only run it as a disguised 3-4 out of a 4-3 lineup. Carter dropping into coverage can be pretty effective to mix things up, similar to how Miami uses Jason Taylor (same kind of player as Carter) in their 3-4 which led to Taylor being the 2006 Defensive MVP. Taylor often lines up as a down lineman and then drops into coverage. His speed, height and long arms make him a problem in coverage on quick crossing routes and button hooks. He's also agile enough to get around lead blocks should it be a run play.
